Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Could feel muscles in my legs from yesterday's woods workout, a good feeling.

Orienteering race 1:51:29 [3] *** 6.8 km (16:24 / km) +110m 15:10 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

CNYO event at Klondike State Forest near West Amboy, NY, using modified courses from last year's NAOC event there. Courses offered were short-easy (white-yellow level), medium-intermediate (orange level), long-difficult (green level), and extra long (which added the medium course to the long). I opted for the long, figuring 6.8 km would be a good distance 1) as training for the upcoming Ultralong champs and Lowlander (alternate event to the Hudson Highlander) and 2) because I haven't done much "long" training lately.

Enjoyable woods, nice running temp (mid 60s and overcast), and excellent course... except for the somewhat mishung control at #3 which caused me several moments' pause (about 1:30, actually -- the person who set it had a slightly different center-of-the-circle and no clue sheet; flag was somewhat hidden on a rootstock rather than at the edge of a swamp 20m south). #4 was my own error as I circled around a bit slightly west of the control site, losing about 7-8 minutes as I relocated from 2 different trails.

After some mistakes on yesterday's training course my focus today was on keeping track of good compass. I started out really well, going straight to the first control. Used contours as well to 2 and 3, then missed a bit on 4. Compassed well from trail on 5. A little off 7-8; didn't leave 8 in direction I planned (distracted by other runners; I was also getting tired at this point with almost half the course still to go). Was a little right of line to 10 so I hestated 30m short of the control. Good compassing to 14 as well, though I got off to the right to 15. I need to keep working on this skill but am happy with the ones I got right today.

Added info: FR measured 8.9 km.

Orienteering 1:01:18 [3] *** 3.71 km (16:31 / km)
spiked:11/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Training on Salmon River Fish Hatchery map near Altmar, NY, using a copy of Glen's green-middle map from last year's NAOC. Used some of the same points, chose a few different ones, and tried to move cleanly. Had to pay attention since there were no flags or even streamers to look for. Extra controls I selected were contour features (reentrants or spurs).

I left one control in the wrong direction, going south instead of east, but didn't correct for a bit (somehow convincing myself the trail I was headed for was overgrown since last year -- Glen pointed out later it was an ATV trail and probably not overgrown). I don't think I moved as fast as at last year's NAOC, but there were a lot fewer people in the woods, too. :-)

Temp in upper 60's, overcast when I started and showers and some thunder when I finished. I don't have my map with me or I'd put how many controls spiked too.

Note

After dinner at the Riverhouse Restaurant in Pulaski we drove over to see Lake Ontario. A lot of water, there. :-) Drove SW around the curve of the lake and stopped at Mexico Point State Park, a tiny park with pavilion and small swimming beach (we were there after the beach closed but didn't want to swim anyway). Took a short walk (11 mins) from the parking area to Spy Island, where Silas Towne is buried. He was a patriot in the Revolutionary War who warned the Colonists of plans by a British officer to attack Fort Stanwix.

Note

Spent time pulling weeds I'd neglected all summer, including very unwanted ragweed which hadn't been seen in that area for many years.

Didn't run today because left knee and right hip are still sore from yesterday's Pilates workout. Maybe tomorrow...

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y. Will go for a walk this afternoon (to mail cards and get some aerobic exercise for the first time in over a week...not counting treading water in the ocean --at Bethany Beach, DE-- on Tuesday).

Walking 44:01 [2] 3.0 mi (14:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Walked around Malden Bridge loop, with a little extra tacked on at Howes Rd. to check out the new paving of Alb. Tpk. (not sure it really needed it -- there are probably other town roads that need it more. Perhaps someone "important" lives on that stretch...)

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Even sweatier today since more windows were opened, letting in the humid air. Keep thinking how nice it would be with just the A/C, but instructor doesn't get there early enough to turn it on (her "backup" helper, a 77 year old, does her best; at least she's there before the appointed time to open up the doors).

Note

In two days Greg gets married! Wish for a beautiful, unhumid day -- thanks!

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y. Used the ball (and weights, briefly) today, though by the time I got there all that was left was the really, really big ex. balls, making some exercises difficult (so I put the ball aside because all of these exercises are adaptable to different tools or none at all). Nice to be in the air conditioned building!!

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 5:53 [3] 0.5 mi (11:46 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Running (treadmill) hills 10:10 [4] 1.0 mi (10:10 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Tempo run on the treadmill. It was warmer than I expected in the machine room, so I only did a mile.

Hiking hills 8:22 [3] 0.5 mi (16:44 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

7.5 % incline

Walking (treadmill) 10:35 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (7:35 @3) 0.66 mi (16:02 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Walked hard until I hit 2.5 miles total, then cooled down for the next 3 minutes. Did adductor machine afterwards.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Glad I go to the morning session and not the one at 6 pm. There IS an air conditioning unit (small one) but instructor never gets there early enough to turn it on long enough to cool the room. It was going, and fans were moving air around, so it wasn't too bad today despite a few open windows (?!).

Too darn hot this weekend to do anything.

Friday Aug 14, 2009 #

Walking 25:00 [2] 1.5 mi (16:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Walked to the bridge in MB and back after dinner with Rob and a friend who's visiting this weekend. Showed them how high the water was when we got 7" of rain here a couple of weeks ago. :-) The creek is back to normal now.

Note

Didn't get out today; maybe tomorrow...

Wednesday Aug 12, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Did about 10 minutes of stepping, plus abs and weights. Hot and humid, little breeze from a couple of fans.

Tuesday Aug 11, 2009 #

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y; today's prop was an elastic band (Theraband). Sometimes we use bands, sometimes rings, sometimes balls (sometimes more than one of these).

No follow up exercising because I had a lot of errands to do... maybe tomorrow (if the hot weather breaks) I'll get a walk or trail run in.

Monday Aug 10, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Easy class in the heat and rising humidity of this morning (in Chatham), no stepping. I was going to skip stepping anyway because my left calf (on the outside, about where it and the soleus connect to the Achilles) is still sore from my ankle turning over and twisting a few times in the last hour of the rogaine.

Saturday Aug 8, 2009 #

Orienteering long (rogaine) 5:41:56 [3] 13.0 mi (26:18 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

CNYO Rogaine near Pharsalia, NY with Glen (Team Ramble On), 6-hour division, coed category. Super weather (mid-70s) with partial sun, no rain, low humidity, few bugs. Only a few areas of crappy raspberry brambles that we chose to go through (most of them mapped very well; others had extended beyond mapped areas). Well mapped, well hung, and just a fine time had by all.

Not too many teams were signed up this year -- what's with that? Is Rogaine a dying format, or do we just have too many choices?

1st overall (6-hour), 1st coed team.

Had my Forerunner keeping track in my pack (I did not look at it once!). The 24-hour rogaine covered more territory, of course, but this map shows the controls most 6-hour competitors visited (or tried to), and my track (Glen's mileage may vary :-) ). Distance is per Glen's FR (mine showed 12 mi, but may have lost signal partway).

Friday Aug 7, 2009 #

Walking 33:26 [1] 1.85 mi (18:04 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Easy walk past bridge to intersection by church in Malden Bridge.

Creek is MUCH lower than it was last week at this time. :-) The canoe is still hung up on the tree, however. I don't suppose it would do anyone any good for in its present condition...

Note
(sick)

Headache and stomach upset. Spent day in bed.

Wednesday Aug 5, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Slow workout because it was hot and stuffy in the room despite the open doors and windows. Good stretching, anyway.

Tuesday Aug 4, 2009 #

Hiking hills (treadmill) 41:00 [3] 2.5 mi (16:24 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

At the Y, after taking Glen's car for inspection/oil change. Warmed up at 1% incline for 0.5 mi, then varied incline from 2-9 (hill walking intervals) for the rest.

Saturday Aug 1, 2009 #

Running (dirt) 1:21:00 [3] ** 4.1 mi (19:45 / mi) +130m 17:59 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Ran/walked the ridge trail at Stockbridge Mountain to the flagpole and back, starting from Olivia's Overlook in Lenox, MA. Narrow, rooty and rocky in places, with some blowdowns and puddles to pick my way around here and there. I'd been only partway down this trail last time I was here (when I ran/hiked the Charcoal Trail). I only took a couple wrong turns (even with a map in my hand!). Temps in upper 70s or low 80s and sunny but fairly clear.

Photo of the flagpole up on the ridge, and a couple views therefrom (is that a word?) ...

Walking hills (trails) 35:00 [1] 1.4 mi (25:00 / mi) +70m 21:38 / mi
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Stevens Glen trail (just downhill from Olivia's Overlook) with Glen. :-) It was muddier (especially crossing power line) than the last time I was here, in June. One of the bridges across a creek was covered with rocks up to 6" in diameter that had washed down in the recent heavy rains (streambed is about a foot deeper than it used to be, 50 meters uphill from the bridge), so the creek must have been pretty darn high! We were able to pick our way across safely (assuming the bridge would still hold the rocks) and get to the Glen, which was pretty impressive. Left the camera behind, or I would have documented the bridge as well as the waterfall.

Wiped mud off shoes in anticipation of dinner out at the Berkshire Brewery in Great Barrington (about 20 minutes or so from Lenox). Very nice beer, and decent food. We'd never been before but knew it was there. Liked the Berkshire Brown beer so much we brought a few bottles home to enjoy later.
