Walking long (rogaine training) 1:52:53 [1] 5.6 mi (20:10 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Walked Route 66 from the church in Malden Bridge to "Kinyon's Canyon" campground which was reported to have stranded campers due to yesterday's heavy rains, according to the TV news. We received 4.3" in about 4 hours yesterday afternoon, then a break, then another 2.8" in the evening. That's about 2" more than the previous heavy rains I've measured.

Took my time, and my camera, to record the high waters in the Kinderhook Creek--highest it's ever been during our 29 years living here. (It qualifies for rogaine training due to the time on my feet.) My pictures are here:

Malden Bridge album

One news report mentions the campers (near the end).

More rain (and flood warnings) in the forecast for tomorrow. Then a reprieve on Saturday.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Sticky, sticky, and warm (no A/C). One woman had to sit down for a few minutes after becoming light-headed. There was a light breeze, occasionally, and a fan or two, but otherwise it was rather warm. We kept things pretty low key (more strength, less cardio).

Inner thighs a bit sore from yesterday (pilates with ball, and adductor machine set at 75 lbs), but loosened up during exercise.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y -- yay, Mary is back! I enjoyed the session. We used the ball for many exercises, so I may feel it in my legs tomorrow. Or maybe any pains/tiredness will be because of...

Running (track) intervals (indoor track) 26:36 intensity: (14:42 @2) + (11:54 @4) 2.23 mi (11:56 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Indoor track at the Y, after a half-mile warm-up on the treadmill. I managed to pull off 6 repeats of 345m (3 times around) by mostly walking on the easy parts (2x around, between the hard intervals). Don't think I could have done any more, though. Times were 1:57 to 2:01 for the 345m sections, about what I was doing earlier in the year (last time I did intervals).

Running (track) warm up/down 12:31 [2] 1.0 mi (12:31 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

My warm up (actually, on the treadmill) and cool down (which included jogging and walking).

Note

Interesting local story about an attempted Great Blue Heron rescue.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Sweaty workout today, mostly because of the humidity. :-)

Orienteering race 1:23:57 [3] *** 4.8 km (17:29 / km)
spiked:8/11c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Green course at Hickory Run, set by Sandy (excellent course!). This would have been much easier in the early spring, but the woods were nicer than yesterday at PEEC. A little light rain at the start, and wet woods, but temperature was cooler (low-mid 70s) and bugs barely apparent, so a good day for orienteering.

Starting near the same time as Rob Wilkison; I let him go first and waited about 45 seconds until I started. Saw him again heading towards 5 (I hadn't yet found 4, didn't see it near him, and did the right thing by heading towards the nearby road to get relocated). However, I never saw him again, because I took a more creative route to 5. Because my glasses fogged up early I was only using the magnifier and had trouble seeing what was going on between 4 and 5 (stream with clumps of laurel/rhododendron nearby) -- couldn't tell if the stream bed was deep or not so plan was to loop somewhat right of the line to hit the stream further up where contour lines were more visible (not steep).

Between the thicker vegetation (mapped as light green, but this is full-blown summer foliage), and not seeing smaller details well I went even farther right of the line than I wanted, going as far north as # 7 (saw a bag, checked the code figuring if it was the right code I'd know exactly where I was, and it matched). Manage to bobble the approach from there, even, and went too far left, hitting the stream 100 m south of the control before getting my act together. No real problems from then on; had 4th fastest split to # 8 (of 20 on green) which was basically a follow-the-bearing control which I don't usually do as well on, so I'm happy about that. Saw #10 on my way to 2 so I knew what that looked like. Finished 7th of 20, about 7:30 behind Rob Wilkison and a good 33 min behind the leader (John Campbell), but relatively pleased with my effort.

Orienteering 1:29:08 [2] ***
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Training at PEEC / Stuckey Pond map. Took a green course map from 2005 DVOA meet and did some of the controls, tried to do line O, etc. Thick woods, warm day, and plenty of mosquitoes made for distracting conditions, so I didn't keep in perfect contact with the map (what a surprise). Forerunner says 5.2 km. I was sure of my location at 2 of the 4 green course controls; not sure of # 1, and skipped # 2. Worked my way in from 4 to keep the time reasonable.

Weekend's plan was to orienteer here, on to Stroudsburg for overnight, and run at DVOA Hickory Run meet on Sunday. Sun. morning we visited the Stroudsmoor Inn just south of Stroudsburg which is where Greg and his fiancee will be married in less than a month! They picked a very nice place and gorgeous location -- now we'll just hope for excellent weather.

Note

Took a day trip with a quilting friend to the Adirondack Museum (Blue Mountain Lake, NY) to see the museum as well as a display of about 30 quilts (from 150 years ago to recent) from the area. Fun day. (As far as training goes, I guess several hours on my feet is better than all day sitting, right?)

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y with a different substitute than Tuesday's session. This lady was more direct (and talkative) than Kendra, and easier to follow (she "cued" well).

Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Class in Chatham. I could feel some muscles I worked yesterday in Pilates, but nothing that held me back. Pilates again tomorrow? I wonder if it will be Kendra again?

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y. Different instructor today (Mary should be back next week), who appears to be all muscle and no fat (and petite too).

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 19:15 [2] 1.15 mi (16:44 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Incline 1%, speed 3.6-3.8 mph.

Hiking (treadmill) 26:10 [2] 1.6 mi (16:21 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

On treadmill, inclines between 5.5 and 8.5%.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Break is over; class in Chatham started again. Pilates last week kept me in pretty good shape, though. I only had trouble with one or two shoulder exercises (since my right shoulder gives me grief anyway). Good to keep using it, though.

Running (dirt) 1:02:43 [3] * 5.0 mi (12:33 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Ran at Albany Pine Bush from Madison Ave. Extension. Weather was just about perfect, mid 70s with lower humidity and some clouds. A sandy trail with few roots and no rocks made for comfortable running, too.

More places had been bulldozed (i.e. habitat revitalization -- removing invasives that aren't pitch pine or scrub oak, I guess) than the last time I was there (probably last winter), including some of the trails, so I got a little more sun than expected, but it felt good. Didn't try to take it too easy either.

Friday Jul 17, 2009 #

Walking 37:30 [2] 2.5 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

66S to farm driveway and back. Warm (mid 70's) and humid making it feel like mid 80's.

HR ~110 when I finished (at the end of yesterday's walking it was ~120).

Thursday Jul 16, 2009 #

Pilates class 45:00 [1]

At the Y. Class cut short because instructor had a dentist appt. No "aids" today, mostly to speed things up.

Walking (indoor track) 27:04 [3] 2.0 mi (13:32 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Testing to see how fast I could go without hills and with A/C. :-)

Felt the muscles on front of shins (what are they called?) during the 1st mile, but not the second (which was slightly faster -- negative split, hurray!).

Wednesday Jul 15, 2009 #

Running (dirt) hills 51:48 [3] ** 3.53 mi (14:40 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Ran the trails at the Powell Bird Sanctuary in Old Chatham, mid-day. I've covered all these trails many times over the years so don't go back often, but today seemed like a good day -- sunny, so the tree cover would protect me and keep me cooler. Temps in the mid-70s and low humidity (and no FDFs!) made for great running weather. Lots of uphill to start, and I tried to push it on some shorter uphills later (including a tenth-of-a-mile steady climb after the first mile) for hill training.

Tuesday Jul 14, 2009 #

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Class at the Y. Strength exercises using the Dyanband; more upper body work than usual.

Followed by a successful shopping spree for a mother-of-the-groom dress -- off the rack, even. :-)

Sunday Jul 12, 2009 #

Walking 59:01 [3] 4.17 mi (14:09 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Counterclockwise "around the south block" in our town. What we call the "north block" is about 3.5 mi. :-)

Gorgeous morning, upper 60s, sunny, and not too humid.

Note

Spent a delightful day yesterday (less the "driving" part of it) with older son Greg and his fiancée and their groomsmen (including younger son Rob, and the fiancée's one and only brother, plus 3 of Greg's friends from HS and college), helping to choose their outfits at the tux place as well as the before and after chatter at Greg's apartment. It was nice to catch up with the 3 friends; we hadn't seen the two from college, who were Greg's roommates, since their graduation from Villanova in 2005. The groomsmen will have black tuxes with dark green vests and ties; groom will have a lighter green paisley vest with lime-green tie. They'll look very handsome. :-)

Friday Jul 10, 2009 #

Walking 42:20 [3] 3.0 mi (14:07 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Malden Bridge loop/balloon. Temp in low 70s and just slightly humid -- pretty nice. Kept up just over 14:00 pace until the last 3/4 mile which had more uphills than the first 2+ miles.

Wednesday Jul 8, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham.

The "theme" for this session was 'pushups' and most of the women there were able to do at least one military-style pushup. I wimped out of the pushup progression because of my shoulder and did about 20 'bench presses' with 10-lb weights instead. I could probably do a few pushups, but then my shoulder would let me know about it for the next several days... Side planks give me trouble too.

Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 #

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y. Right side is slightly better today and less bothersome, so perhaps posture-related. Used exercise balls and weights to supplement movements today.

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 15:20 [1] 0.9 mi (17:03 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

After pilates; couldn't bring myself to do speed work -- maybe next week.

Hiking hills (treadmill) 31:45 [3] 2.0 mi (15:52 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Treadmill, 3.7 mph avg and varying from 3% to 8.5% incline.

Monday Jul 6, 2009 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Back to Chatham -- good to be back, but right mid-section was tight and sore, perhaps from my fall in the ocean on Friday? Or driving ~1000 mi in the past week?

Saturday Jul 4, 2009 #

Running (dirt) 32:00 [2]
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

At the Peninsula along Indian River Bay in so. Delaware where my parents have a condo. After not having run for a week plus lots of driving/flying/driving mid-week, I felt really sluggish and muscles were tight; it was a good twenty minutes before I started feeling normal, but didn't want to stay out too long. Did a 4 minute walking cool down afterwards.

The day before, we braved the beach at Rehoboth but didn't stay in the water long; not because it was too cold, but because there were (probably) too many jellyfish (or parts of jellyfish that had been pummeled in the surf). After a few minutes in the water legs and arms started itching... We did walk pretty much the length of the boardwalk twice, though, plus 2-1/2 blocks from our parking spot to the beach and back. LOTS of people on the beach itself, just not in the water.
