Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham, despite this being a break week; this is a rescheduled class from the previous session. Good, fun, small class.

Note

2008 exercise analysis:

Inspired by Glen, I looked up how many running entries I have for 2008 -- 101 (~175 miles total, including road, trail, track, and treadmill). That compares to 46 entries and about 110 miles for 2007. Interesting. This doesn't include any walking/hiking etc.

Orienteering outings -- 65 / 266 km for 2008 vs. 66 / 272 km for 2007. Also interesting, since I did many more brown courses than green courses this year, but probably did more rogaines which can account for greater distance.

More climb in 2007 than 2008 (as reported; and as expected based on more brown courses). More total mileage in 2008.

Much of my 2008 running was quality stuff, though short, as I began doing tempo and interval runs late in 2007 and continued until recently. I'm resting my ankle and knee for a bit. I haven't noticed any twinges in my ankle in the last week or so, so I may be able to start throwing some running back into the mix early in 2009.

Walking 29:34 [2] 2.0 mi (14:47 / mi)

Walked to the P.O. to mail something, and then beyond it to the 1-mile turnaround point. Nice weather, upper 30's and overcast, but the sun was setting and I wasn't dressed for low visibility so wanted to get back home and didn't extend the walk. Just under 14:00 for the first mile.

Walking 52:25 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #1

Walked around New Holland PA near in-laws' place with Rob; distance probably close to 3 miles. Cool, low to mid 30's with a little breeze, walking at his pace. It was nice to have someone to talk to while I walked, even about "nothing."

Lunch at in-laws', dinner at my parents' (30 min. away) with all my family was really nice -- I think there were 19 of us including a 5-month old (my brother's wife's grandson). :-)

Note

Christmas shopping is done.

I managed to do some shopping today without a purse or wallet or driver's license. How, you might ask? I had a 20-year-old along who has a copy of my credit card (meaning, a usable card on my account), and his license and keys. :-)

We went to get the headlight fixed on the car he drives, then did some last-minute shopping. It was when we were waiting for the car work to be done (a half-hour drive from home) that I realized I didn't have my wallet.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Hiking (snowshoes) 27:00 [2]

Hiked the perimeter (more or less) of the back yards/fields. I tried to go where Glen had gone on Saturday but most of the tracks were invisible because we had more snow, and it drifted today with the winds. So I broke trail most of the way; a good workout for the quads, for sure. Decided one circuit was enough (and it was starting to get dark).

Shoveling (strength) 10:00 [0]

Wimped out of snowshoeing again today and just shoveled the snow by the mailboxes again -- a little more today since they hadn't plowed back in close yet, but I think the snow was winding down. As long as when they re-plow they don't make too big of a snowbank, we're good.

Also shoveled a path from the house to the road, as the driveway still needs to be cleared...

Shoveling (strength) 10:00 [1]

Shoveling out the mailboxes. First I had to wait for a neighbor to move her car so I could shovel. :-)

We're in a line of 4 boxes along the road. There's a foot or two of stuff to clear between the plowed road and the boxes so that the delivery lady can get her truck close to the boxes. It's what the plow leaves behind, too, so usually heavier than normal. So I move it a little bit at a time.

Note

I just discovered a new way to express my victory at Mt. Tom, day 2 (this fall's A-meet, where I beat everyone on Brown) -- I did a Bradbury. :-)

Exerc. Class (strength) 55:00 [0]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

"Power sculpt" class at the Y, basically weight work on various muscle groups for 50 minutes or so, followed by 5 or fewer minutes of stretching.

I thought the lunges would make my knee hurt, but I guess I modified them enough. I do feel slight achiness in my shoulder, but what else is new? And I feel slightly stronger -- amazing!

Wonder if I'll have to shovel snow later, or if Glen will come home from work early before the driveway gets too deep for him to drive through. Snow started just about noon today. Prediction is 7-12" for us.

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

On the elliptical, an "interval" program, at the Y. Resistance must have been higher than I normally do (I didn't check it) as it seemed difficult to push the pedals around. Or maybe it was because I had done the class earlier. In any case, sweated for 22 minutes, then cooled down for 8, lowering the resistance.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham -- last Wednesday of the session. We'll see how well I keep up the workouts over the next couple of weeks... :-) New session starts after New Years.

Tuesday Dec 16, 2008 #

Walking (treadmill) 29:20 [2] 2.0 mi (14:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

At the Y, incline at 1.0. TVs worked today (they weren't on Sunday -- perhaps the cable hadn't been fixed yet?).

Followed by a cool down slower walk, 5:40, 0.33 mi.

Followed by another nice warm shower (running water -- yeay!).

Note

On the way to pick up a sub at Quiznos for dinner (I hadn't cooked since Thursday), Glen called my cell and said he'd gotten the answering machine (not the phone co's voice mail system) at home! Hooray -- that meant the power had finally been restored.

It went off around 2:00 am Friday morning; came back on for 10-15 minutes shortly after 6 am, then was off for good until this afternoon. Among many other branches that came down in the area this past weekend, an evergreen branch had pulled an electrical wire off a pole just up the road from us. That branch got trimmed off the wire yesterday, and the wire was restrung today around 2 pm. As I left to go to the Y around 4, I could see them working 1/2 mi down the road on another problem area. The counties and towns are wondering where they are going to put all the downed logs and stuff too big to grind up.

I don't think there are too many left in my county without power -- perhaps just folks back the dirt/town roads. I'm thankful we live on a county route; [though the folks 1/4 mi from us on the state route had power last night]. And that we have a woodstove and enough wood, which kept us warm; and enough camping supplies (though we don't camp anymore) to store food and heat up water.

Exerc. Class warm up/down 55:00 [1]

Ex. class in Chatham, where they had never lost power over the weekend (at least in the village itself) -- lucky folks.

Still none at home, but the weather got warm today (50!) so I had to get some dry ice to keep the cold stuff cold enough in the camping cooler.

Note

The exercise session was followed by a nice luncheon out with the group and our instructor at the restaurant owned by one of the exercisers and her husband. Too bad she spent more time waiting on us and not sitting and chatting. Got to know a few ladies a little better -- one copy edits, and another teaches computer science at a local community college.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Pilates class at the Y.

Kinda freaky when your FP is on the next mat over...

Walking (track) 13:42 [2] 1.0 mi (13:42 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Walking, fast, on the inside track at the Y (I had to occasionally step out into the next lane to pass the slowpokes).

Followed by two laps running (interval-type pace), but my hip and ankle hurt so I stopped at two; 1:17. One lap = 115 m.

Friday Dec 12, 2008 #

Fitness equipment 35:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

At the Y, just before they lost power for the third and final time due to the ice storm (it flickered off and on twice before finally cutting out and staying out). I managed to get a hot shower before they kicked everyone out of the place (emergency lights in the locker room gave it an interesting atmosphere).

20 minutes on the treadmill (walking) and 15 on the elliptical which was still usable after the power died, though you didn't have any intensity adjustment, or readout. :-)

Wednesday Dec 10, 2008 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 intensity: (45:00 @0) + (10:00 @1)

In Chatham. No stepping today, just aerobics (to "make up for" just stepping and weights on Monday, supposedly). Didn't break a sweat, and my heart rate probably only increased during one segment. Ah, well; still fun.

Tuesday Dec 9, 2008 #

Note

No organized exercise session, but I did spend about 4 hours on my feet today, Christmas-gift shopping, so that should count for something. An apple, hot pretzel (okay, that's bad, but yummm, so good), and a cup of coffee constituted lunch.

Monday Dec 8, 2008 #

Exerc. Class 45:00 [1]

In Chatham. In the "dark" (enough ambient light; plenty of windows) because of a power outage (so no heat, but we WERE indoors) and no music. :-) The power came back on just after the class ended a little early (because she didn't want us stretching/lying on cold floors).

It had come back on an hour earlier at home...

Sunday Dec 7, 2008 #

Note

Another rest day. Weather didn't seem conducive to enjoyable orienteering... (sorry, George and Lyn).

I did spend my day constructively, however, sorting out my quilting corner (or part of it) enough to find a project bag I was looking for. Now to finish organizing the fabric I unearthed.

Fitness equipment intervals (elliptical) 33:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Elliptical at the Y. Started out with one program (XC) but it was brutal, so switched over to cross training (alternating forward and backward pedaling) and continued with that for 30 min.

I would have done longer, but I wanted to see how running on the treadmill felt (for a tempo run).

Fitness equipment warm up/down 5:00 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Cool down on the elliptical, slower speed.

Running (treadmill) tempo 5:16 [4] 0.5 mi (10:32 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Speed felt okay, but my ankle hurt (just above where the bone sticks out, left side of left ankle) so I didn't do more than 1/2 mile. (Set at 5.8 mph)

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 4:50 [1] 0.25 mi (19:21 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Thursday Dec 4, 2008 #

Note

No exercise today (it's my "usual" day off due to other scheduled things, though the meeting in Chatham fell through).

On another note, I heard yesterday about a recent New Yorker cover about Obama "vetting" pet choices and thought the idea was funny. :-)

Wednesday Dec 3, 2008 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Left ankle and knee complained a little, but not enough to stop.

Note

Heard about these "portable potable" containers (see the first two) on Jeopardy, of all things. Don't people have better things to do? :-)

Tuesday Dec 2, 2008 #

Fitness equipment intervals (elliptical) 40:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

At the Y. My ankle was glad I didn't use the treadmill or track.

Monday Dec 1, 2008 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Class in Chatham. Back to no risers on the step because I could sense my knee wouldn't like riser, and it was fine. Nice, large class too (which is good for Jen but not necessarily for the claustrophobics among us). :-)
