Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham, a 5-5-5 order of business. One of the ab exercises we did, leg bends/toe reaches from tabletop position lying on our backs, highlighted sore abs from yesterday's Pilates class, though I couldn't tell you what it was we did yesterday to make them sore (everything? Can-cans?).

Pilates class 50:00 [2]

Connie the torture lady's class. Met another Diane from Mary's weekday class who asked about Connie and (after class) agreed with my view that she's more "intense." Cut short the reverse planks and threw in some overhead triceps, did not do the side planks (rotating from a full plank).

Note

Hiked at Sam's Point Preserve west of New Paltz, visiting Sam's Point overlook, Ice Caves, and the Verkeerder Kill waterfall. Will download the watch later and add more. About 4.5 hours of walking, at least half of it on uneven rocky trails (the rest was wide carriage roads).

Some photos from the hike:

Eastern towhee singing from atop a dwarf pine. Water in background (off to the northeast from our location) was either Mud Pond or Lake Awosting

Exit of the first ice cave. No ice here, just a nice coolness. Glen is downhill from me at the cave exit, near where I found the deceased rodent.

Verkeerder Kill falls

View of the trail. Most of the footing was as shown in the foreground of this pic; the areas of peat were few and far between, and the blueberry bushes hemmed in the trail.

Sheep laurel was mixed in with the blueberry, and had a small pink flower that looks a lot like the mountain laurel blossom.

Hiking 4:40:26 intensity: (1:51:00 @1) + (2:49:26 @2) * 7.8 mi (35:57 / mi) +341m 31:39 / mi
slept:6.5 shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Edited distance (to be more in keeping with what Glen's watch reflected). I kept losing satellite signal in the ice caves (duh!).

Hiked at Sam's Point Preserve in the Shawangunks, southern New York. Temps in the 70s to low 80s, mostly sunny with some cloudy breaks which felt great and a slight breeze on the ridge. This area was more open (less shaded) than I had expected, with ridgetop dwarf pines and scrub oaks mixed with a LOT of lowbush and highbush blueberry bushes and mountain laurel. A few of the lowbush blueberry bushes on the falls trail had edible berries, maybe a couple dozen at most. The highbush bushes still had small green berries so they should be ripe in 2-3 weeks, I'd guess.

Footing as far as the Ice Caves loop trail was carriage roads with gravel or partially paved surfaces. On the Ice Caves loop there were rocks, roots, ladders, and slippery passages through some of the caves, with one small stretch on actual ice coming out of the last cave. Neat area. AOWN: a dead small critter (vole or shrew ?) near a cave exit which could conceivably have plunged a good 60' (or more?) to its death off the cliff above.

Once we got on the trail to the Verkeerder Kill falls, the footing was much more uneven, with chunks of the limestone and conglomerate rocks all over. The narrow trail was hemmed in by the blueberry and pines so it was difficult to avoid stepping on and around the rocks in the trail. My ankles and knees got a real workout there, and I took it slow so as not to twist anything too much. No major climbs either up or down on this trail, just a gentle slope. The falls were interesting, with some water cascading down a good drop, though I suspect it could be quite impressive during snowmelt periods.

Anyway, a nice hike, and a good day for it. Dinner after at the Gilded Otter in New Paltz where the food and beer are adequate.

Note

AOWN note from Tuesday: didn't see much at Dyken Pond, but on the drive home had to swerve to avoid hitting a determined mother duck and her brood of six(?) or so crossing a busy road. Truck behind me did stop to let her finish the crossing.

"Make way for ducklings!"

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Humid day. Abs are sore from yesterday. All I can figure is the extra weight (8 vs 4 lbs) on my hips during shoulder bridges. I don't remember anything else I might have done differently. It's all good.

National Geographic photo contest entries

I must say, I like the first one best but several others intrigued me too like the Baja desert river shot, and the over/underwater shot.

The rice terraces at sunset are striking too.

Pretty intense on the lower legs today, or was that just because my quads are still recovering from Saturday's race? Light and heavy weights used for various other exercises.

Pulldowns (11@68.75) and a dozen adductors@75# (because we had done some in class).

Plan is to go hiking/running at Dyken Pond this afternoon but we'll wait for the expected showers to pass by. They came a bit later than Intellicast predicted (who said they'd be outta here by noon). Hope the sky clears in the next hour.

Hiking 51:38 [2] 2.15 mi (24:01 / mi) +56m 22:13 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Interesting hike--while Glen ran--at Dyken Pond Preserve in the wilds of the Rensselaer Plateau (south of Grafton, north of Pineridge, and east of Troy), 2.5 miles down a dirt road off several miles of town road. Pretty area with a neat trail network but a bit hard to get to. This would make a nice place for a snowshoe race, but 1) I'm not sure they plow the road in the winter and 2) not much parking. The trails were a bit rooty or rocky but nothing unusual about that; better than paved trails. A taste of the Adirondacks without driving that far, and less climb.

We'd been here at least once before but I think the kids were young then, so maybe 20+ years ago? Perhaps even pre-O. We'd probably stop in more often if it were a bit easier to drive to.

Very cool erratics close to the trail, one (named Grandfather Rock) that was about 3-4m high. There was another area called Ring Rock but which was actually a ring of rocks; think circular stone wall 15-20 m across, big enough to contain two smallish boulders. I should have taken a picture there.

The photo below shows a grouping of large erratics named The Sentinals (click photo for larger view):

Green course at Eagle Rock Reservation, SL 5.08 km. Temps in the 70s and just slightly humid made it a bit uncomfortable but not too-too hot at all. Courses by Nadia P with help from Kseniya and Sergei Z.

Nice course with lots of changes of direction. The Red course had many of my legs in reverse, and I was helped on at least some of them by people at the control (but who headed out in a different direction). 2nd overall of about 8; 1st place 28 minutes ahead was a young girl (Ursula Haldi). So yay, I beat all the guys who did Green.

Visiting the kids and grandkid who live close by (main justification for driving 2-1/2 hours for a local O event). The boys (click for larger photo; sorry about your expression, Greg!):

A road race! Since there was no orienteering to be had close by today, but several road races, Glen picked one close to us and got us registered. It was the Run into Summer 5k to benefit Pop Warner football in East Greenbush, and the course ran through the neighborhood near where they play. Sunny and low to mid 60s at race time.

Only 64 runners (and walkers), so not too much of a crowd and I could set my own pace. Did a bit of passing/being passed because it was a rolling course; I had to power walk up a couple of short sections, but it got me there; and I used downhills to my advantage. Not having run roads in a long time and given the hills, I was satisfied with my total and average per-mile time and placing (first over 50 woman), 38th overall. They only had about 4 age categories (oldest was 40-99), so no prizes, but who needs medals? :-)

Tired now. Need to recover for orienteering tomorrow.

spiked:13/14c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-B 2013-10

Course B, SL 1.7 km, 105m climb

Mass started on the sprint relay, so I had the advantage of being able to follow Clint, Rick, and Jim, who were apparently also on course B, on the short legs to the first couple of controls before they moved out ahead and I was on my own. I tried to slow down a bit but managed to bobble leaving 4 on the way to 5 and got too close to the barn before finding my head(ing). Did fine on the rest of them and saw not a soul except the Southam clan on the trail S of #7 (which was a neat cliff I don't remember having seen before). Correctly predicted that the placement of 12 (NW side of the 2m boulder) meant that approaching from the upper side was a good idea--yay for small miracles. Returned to find Glen had been sent out in a mass start for leg 2, shortly before I finished.

Needed a lot of liquid after before I felt refreshed enough to head out again.

Orienteering race 26:26 [5] *** 2.17 km (12:12 / km) +50m 10:56 / km
spiked:11/12c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-B 2013-10

Course A, after Glen returned from his leg 2 run. SL 1.8 km, 55m climb.

Probably should have stayed on the big trail the whole way rather than going for the smaller trails N of the line, as I passed Rich N heading in to finish but his teammate Jim was at #1 ahead of me. Flip-flopped with Jim the next few then he was able to get to 7 ahead of me and I never saw him again. I angled in to 7 from the boulders along the trail but should have taken a few more steps to the mapped white woods to cut over to the small trail. As it was I had trouble stepping through the low mountain laurel mapped as medium green, and hit the trail farther N than I intended.

Fun courses, beautiful weather (70s, sunny skies), and nice cookout plus potluck afterwards, socializing with other WCOC members before and after their summer meeting. Thanks again to Charlie and Rhonda for their hospitality!

Green course on a new EMPO map (Norray Farms, much expanded). Guess I was the only one on Green; all the guys did Red. I figured I'd do shorter because I'm running again tomorrow in CT, and I'm not 30 anymore. :-) Temps in upper 50s, breezy, and overcast made for great running weather (no bugs, not too humid in the forest though wet underfoot); a bit cool for the club meeting afterward.
4.9 km SL

A 250m, 6-contour climb leg to the first control set the tone...a lot of climb in this course, though the first leg *was* a scenic one along a stream past a set of cascades. A few of the climbs seemed gratuitous. Director Phil H-T made good use of the woods between the farm fields.

My first big bomb was due to overconfidence/lack of attention. 5-6-7 was a series of rootstocks and I didn't check the code at the first one and didn't realize I'd actually hit the second one until I couldn't find 6 where I expected. Then I checked the code and vaguely remembered I'd punched at 71 and not 35. Oops. Had to head back and then visit 71 again but at least it was a large feature and easy to re-find. To 8 I dropped to the stream bed too early but otherwise had no problem finding it. Confused by trails 11-12 and ended up too close to a field and had to backtrack. Then it was just a matter of getting up the steep climb to the tiny boulder (and then back down). I'll post a copy of the map later so the guys on Red can see where the courses were different.

EMPO AGM later, with 8 in attendance. Nothing earth-shattering decided; officers the same as the last number of years (I'm starting my 20th year as treasurer, I thnk). Fall meet directors decided, just a matter of settling on the dates.

Exerc. Class 50:00 [1]

Arrived late (at the end of the warm up) but then jumped right in. In summer I think she spends too much time on warmup anyway (okay, so it's not officially summer for another week and a half). Aerobics, more aerobics, and weights plus abs and stretching.

Note

As (instructor) Jennifer *loves* manatees (she has a little sculpture in the studio, and wore manatee earrings today), I got her a Florida Orienteering women's shirt which has FLO's logo with a manatee on the back. Gave it to her today and she adores it.

I tried to "win" the one in the silent auction at the DVOA A-meet, but since we weren't present to keep track of the latest price I was unsuccessful. :-/

Note

AOWN note: while Glen and I were watching a flicker digging through leaves out front, being watched by a chipmunk who lives nearby, we saw a fox go up the neighbor's driveway and shortly thereafter return with a young woodchuck in its mouth. Good hunting, fox!

At Beebe Hill State Forest in Austerlitz, I hiked the Fog Hill trail loop CCW with a side excursion to No Bottom Pond, while Glen ran mountain bike trails (as well as this loop but we never saw each other until almost at the end). I did take a "horse trail" detour around a stream crossing (mucky) part of the trail figuring it would be higher ground because they didn't want horseback riders to mess up the trail in wet times. Recent horseshoe tracks. [Also did a short excursion up one of two parallel marked Blue trails that start near the parking area...]

Green course by Jeff and Geof, lots of climb. 5 km SL, so I figured I'd be doing well if I finished under 2 hours (it IS Blue Mountain, after all). I'm glad I wore my Active Ankle which I need in rocky areas. Temps in 70s with low humidity made for a nice day, and the mosquitoes weren't too bothersome.

Slow and steady for the most part just because I couldn't move very fast in this terrain, so I could pay more attention to things on the (very excellent) map. Some places had more downed trees than mapped, which probably happened more recently than the map's age; but what was mapped was accurate. I was lucky on #4, the one at the top of the steep climb, partly because once I'd topped out I stopped to take a breath and saw the streamer while looking around to figure out what was mapped as a dot knoll among the hills. On the wrong side of the right reentrant to 5, so a bit off there*, and went too far up a trail near 10 but recognized things didn't look right and turned around. A nice outing and great practice.

One tiny tick on my arm which I noticed after finishing. Watch out for the nymphs.

Now having dessert (S'bucks frappuccino) before dinner at our go-to place near here, Hyde Park Brewery. We suspect the chef there is a CIA graduate (the Culinary Institute is just down the road), and the beer's good too. :-)

--------------------------------------
Edit: GPS track posted.

Beer at HPB was good; food wasn't as good as usual, at least for me, but still tasty.

*After taking a closer look at 5, it seems that cutting the circle on the SW side might have given me an indication of the cliff there that I didn't see on the map at the time.

Lots of body weight (read "push-up") moves during this class; I think I may have overdone it on the shoulder such that I may resort to pain killers later. It can do most things (good range of motion) but does not like push-ups or side planks. A few arm exercises with weights.

At Wilson Powell Bird Sanctuary in Old Chatham. Temp in low 70s, lower-than-typical humidity, made it feel pretty nice. Foot taped as for orienteering, especially since I was using the ORocs, which I chose figuring the trails would be muddy and rocks wet from this morning's rain shower.

As usual, I had to walk most of the uphills, but I tried to keep moving everywhere else. Detoured out to Dorson's Rock to see if I could see our house, but I didn't have my glasses on and wasn't sure I was looking in the right place. :-)

Felt slow but I figure it's better to walk where I need to than not go out at all.
