Set elliptical on hill program; had to keep cranking down the resistance due to sore quads. Should be all set for Sunday. ;-)

shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Setting some posts for the A-meet at points that Glen had streamered and our vetter had visited. In a few cases the streamers (sometimes 3 colors worth--the mapper's, the course setter's, and the vetter's) were ripped to shreds but usually clumped together near where they used to hang -- chipmunks?

Also vetted a few controls on the way back to the car.

Dinner at Davidsons in Glens Falls. The waitress recognized us, but service was sloppy (forgetful -- or maybe she had trouble hearing). Hope she's not working upstairs the night of the A-meet dinner. :-)

Seen on the way to Glens Falls from Moreau: 6 or 7 hot air balloons from the end of the Adirondack Balloon Festival, and at least 2 elephants! They were near the civic center, so the circus must have been in town this weekend. Not your typical AOWN.
10 PM

Note

360 competitors entered so far for the A-meet, our biggest meet by far. Hope everyone enjoys it!

Note

Just a note to keep my log from being inactive. Been attending family functions with no opportunity for exercise; a trip to Moreau planned for tomorrow

Walking 1:25:11 [1] 4.16 mi (20:27 / mi) +109m 18:55 / mi
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 5

Took a walk around the "south block" with G & S, who were in the area after visiting Ramana D. for a roller skating party. :-)

Nice, almost-fall conditions with just a few leaves starting to turn. Dry creeks (because we haven't had much rain), and cloudy, mid 60s.

Other (Spin cycling) 45:00 [3]
slept:7.0 shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Had to miss class in Chatham so stopped by at the Y. I was in time to get set up for the beginner spinning class, so I took advantage of that (instead of treadmill).

Hard on the lower quads, but that's what I need to strengthen most. Shoulder a bit fatigued but not painful, so between that and pulldownsthat I've restarted I should be okay. Should do a few more beginner classes before trying a regular one, I think.

Walking warm up/down (Indoor track) 15:17 [2] 1.0 mi (15:17 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Feet felt like lead when we got off the cycles and stretched, so I knew I'd better do something else to keep the blood flowing, and allow for more stretching.

Tuesday Sep 14, 2010 #

Note

Okay, exercise schedule a bit messed up this week with changes of plans and extra work (website related -- the new one that is, which is coming along...), so I skipped Pilates today, and will skip ex. class tomorrow. Maybe something else at the Y.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Good to do something after weekend visiting family (7 hour drive each way).

Running (dirt) long 1:16:31 [3] * 5.63 mi (13:35 / mi) +11m 13:30 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Cooler weather today (and a busy weekend planned), so a long run to take advantage of the time available. Front came through last night with thunderstorms and there were clouds and a breeze, temps in the low 70s.

At Pine Bush Preserve in Albany, from the Discovery Center parking lot. Looped around most of the trails, leaving off one that I know has big hills.

Saw one other runner and a bunch of birds. No lupines or Karner blues. :-)
3 PM

Walking warm up/down 15:13 [1] 0.49 mi (31:02 / mi) +19m 27:42 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Cool down walk and stretching. Went up the slight hill to a viewpoint to stretch.

Tuesday Sep 7, 2010 #

Note

Planning a long run tomorrow when it will be a bit cooler, I hope. Break week in Chatham so have to look elsewhere.
10 AM

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using just weights, for triceps and some hip work. Two 30-sec high planks, which seemed easy (I could have gone a bit longer).
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 20:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Arc trainer at the Y using a program that varied the incline/resistance.

Orienteering race 1:27:36 [3] *** 4.5 km (19:28 / km) +249m 15:15 / km
spiked:9/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Green course at Pond Mountain near Kent CT. Temps in upper 60s just about perfect.

Boris set the courses (from afar) and Marie/Mike and maybe Becks placed the flags.

I wasn't clean on 2, 4, 7 or 9; had help relocating on 6 (9 minute error), and think 1 was on an adjacent rock pile, not the one circled. Three was great; 5 was a short leg that I did on compass (ahead of Joe who had left the previous one ahead of me, but then I proceeded to mess up the next one badly). I did 7 on compass too, heading over the hill and attacking from above. Took off in the wrong direction going to 8 (I found myself heading North instead of SW!) but corrected and took the AT most of the way down the steep part. Pavi flew by on the way to my 8 (her 7).

Waffled a bit on the way to the next control (checked something too low) and was eventually led in by Aleck B., who I had seen at 6 and 7, and at the water stop between 8 and 9. Pretty much a straight shot to 10, though I lost confidence in my location when in the circle (but the boulder straight ahead had my control #!). Short easy legs, or running downhill the rest of the way.

FR distance--5.657 (climb is also from FR as Boris hadn't calculated it).

Hiking hills 30:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Stopped on the way home at Drowned Lands Swamp, a Columbia Land Conservancy protected area in SE Columbia Co. Didn't take the trail along the swamp which didn't appear to have all that much water in it, but instead took the trail up the hill to see if there was a view.

There were actually two, one west from partway up, and one east from the almost top of the hill (naturally, we had to also go to the top).

Legs felt more work going downhill than up, so I'm logging this as exercise.

Hiking hills 29:57 [2] 1.77 km (16:52 / km) +147m 11:56 / km
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Hiked up to starting point (Day 2 start) from the upper parking area on Spier Falls Road. Didn't have to refer to the map. :-)

added Note: This is not the path everyone else will use to get there.
1 PM

Orienteering 1:43:53 [3] ***
spiked:14/14c shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Test course at Moreau. FR stopped receiving satellites on the "descent" (guess the mountain was in the way), so be forewarned...

Before it stopped, it recorded 4.373km, +105.0m climb. Actual distance was over 5.5 km (estimated).
3 PM

Hiking warm up/down 35:09 [2] ***
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Hiked back to the car, but FR wasn't working the entire time, so I don't have exact distance. Stopped at a control site I'd visited last weekend to pick up trash I left behind (small Gatorade bottle).

19 envelopes, but one was from FUMA with 11 entries (and payment for 5 more to come when they figure out who else will come).

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using balls. Certain balance efforts may be felt tomorrow.
11 AM

Walking hills (treadmill) 25:00 [2] 1.64 mi (15:15 / mi) +70m 13:28 / mi
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Legs still tired from earlier in the week / hiking last weekend, so nothing too strenuous. I almost skipped this exercise completely, but fought that demon down.
