Note

Walked, downhill/slowly at times, at Hand Hollow today(where I ran Thursday), along with a bunch of people. The Land Conservancy hosted this walk to show people what was there and what's planned for the area. Saw a few people I knew, too. :-)

If it wasn't so long & skinny it might be good for orienteering, but it's only a few hundred acres total.

Walking 20:52 [2] 1.3 mi (16:03 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

Was going to have a rest day, but decided to walk to the post office to mail entry for HVO festival at the end of October and get it postmarked a day before the deadline. :-) Hope the weather's good a month from now.

Thursday Sep 28, 2006 #

Running (dirt) 51:37 [3] 3.65 mi (14:09 / mi)
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Hand Hollow conservation area. From Rt. 9 parking, out Green trail to Blue, Blue trail to parking to Green to Red to New and back to parking at Rt. 9. Saw several men on the trail at various points (2 singles and 2 who were replacing a mower blade on the mower left in the middle of the trail near the un-bridged stream crossing).

Had to walk some, but knees didn't bother me.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Mostly floor aerobics with a little step and weight work thrown in at the end. Not as energetic as I like. Now I get to go ride around on the lawn tractor...maybe the grass will stop growing?

Tuesday Sep 26, 2006 #

Running (paved) hills 51:14 [3] 4.15 mi (12:21 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

South "block" (loop), clockwise. Partly cloudy; temp. about 60-61 but it felt warmer.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]

Sunday Sep 24, 2006 #

Orienteering race (Classic) 1:24:22 [4] *** 5.13 km (16:27 / km) +100m 14:59 / km
spiked:14/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

Green Classic. Though I found all controls on the first try, some of my route choices could have been better/faster. I'm glad I navigated better than yesterday, though I still couldn't keep up with Sandy on the trails (once she passed me at #7). 60's & cloudy to start, light rain about 1/2-way through turned heavier before I finished, making my glasses fog up and useless.

Saturday Sep 23, 2006 #

Event: CNYO A meet

Orienteering race (Sprint -- "Old Eyes") 20:21 [5] *** 1.83 km (11:07 / km) +50m 9:47 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

After a downpour, sprints started during cloudy weather. The rain held off until then end of the middle course in the afternoon. Cloudy, 60's. Had a little "help" with a few controls (others were there showing their position); clean run.

Orienteering race (Middle) 1:04:58 [4] *** 3.52 km (18:27 / km) +115m 15:52 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

Green Middle. Temps upper 60's. Messed up #9 enough that I relocated, twice, from the trail. Second relocation worked. :-) (8 min. error based on Lex's time). Then I managed to chase a bag going to #12... Could have managed 52:30 with no errors.

Friday Sep 22, 2006 #

Walking 29:41 [3] 2.0 mi (14:50 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

Since I didn't get out yesterday I figured I'd better at least walk today; didn't want to run because of sprint & middle distance scheduled for tomorrow.

Wednesday Sep 20, 2006 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]

Knee felt marginally better today; only minor twinges while stepping (we didn't do as much today, either; more upper body work).

Tuesday Sep 19, 2006 #

Running (paved) tempo 35:20 [4] 3.0 mi (11:47 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

Malden Bridge church loop (plus a little to make it an even 3 mi.). Got a run in after the sun went away and before the rain started (still light rain at this point). I tried to keep the pace up similar to my pace during the sprints. Much faster than my typical runs around here.

Edit: Glen called this a Tempo run, so I changed the workout "type".

Monday Sep 18, 2006 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Left knee sore enough that I put my "step" down a notch. Sharp pain on top of knee as I bent it (either to step up or to dip the right leg). This knee bothered me Saturday, too, but not Sunday (at least not that I noticed), so I assume it'll go away again.

Sunday Sep 17, 2006 #

Orienteering race (Sprint 1S) 22:35 [5] *** 2.4 km (9:25 / km) +40m 8:41 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

Per k time bogus because of the skipped control.

Round 1 of sprint finals. Managed to mess up #4 (misread the paved rectangles) and #13 (slow; was reading the trails too much instead of looking for the parking lot corner). And I managed to completely ignore #11 (too much oxygen debt on the long run?). Oh well, the result was my placement in the group I should have been in anyway. Fun, fun course in part open and part wood. Thanks, J-man!

Orienteering race (Sprint 2S) 35:26 [4] *** 2.32 km (15:16 / km) +55m 13:39 / km
spiked:13/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

Good run except for the one I messed up (#6, long leg). Reason: I didn't stick to my plan (I was drawn in the "wrong" direction by a passing pack led by Pavlina). Ended up relocating from the road leading northeast out of the parking lot, a lot farther up than I should have been. Original plan was to go east to the trail and run the trail to the spur just before the trail junction and head NE-N from there. I just drifted too far NE to ever have a hope of hitting the trail and had to go into recovery mode (hi, Valerie!).

Orienteering race (Sprint Final AS & B) 29:49 [5] *** 2.54 km (11:44 / km) +80m 10:09 / km
spiked:14/15c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

Managed to mess up #3 on the first loop (AS); started with Valerie and was not far behind her all the way to #3, but she knew which trail we were on (along the power line; I thought we were on the SE-heading trail and was confused when we were too close to the road) and she managed to correct faster and pull away after that; I never saw her again. I was passed by Maprunner between 3 and 4 but pulled ahead on the road run from 4 to 5; we traded places twice again on the second loop (she started 2 minutes behind me).

Thanks to both J-man and Randy for awesome sprint courses in very interesting terrain.

Orienteering race (Farsta-Hickory Run SP) 1:07:42 [3] *** 3.96 km (17:06 / km)
spiked:7/8c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

First loop of the Farsta (Glen ran the 2nd loop of our start), RGRR loop with 8 controls (this was the shortest option). Though I had to use the "bearings" skill that I don't always do well on, I still didn't need to pace count. On the one control I "missed" (didn't go far enough) the leg was more than 500m anyway and a different route choice (trail option as opposed to through the white woods) rather than pace counting would have helped me be sure of my location. I recovered 'quickly' (less than 2 minutes lost).

Walking 31:21 [3] 2.0 mi (15:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #1

Rain finally ended. It was humid but felt cool even though it was almost 70 degrees (which usually feels warm to me).

Monday Sep 11, 2006 #

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Back to exercise class! Felt good to do that strength stuff again (yeah, I was kinda lazy in August), but I'm dreading returning to the American Legion hall where they take place now. The cigarette stench is overpowering; the place was closed up for a week+. Yes, we had windows open, but we can't do that for too much longer...

Sunday Sep 10, 2006 #

Note

On my feet all day doing registration (setting up, registration, tearing down and putting back in the car) for our NOD meet (Glen was course setter/starts&finish). Didn't feel like collecting controls at the end so other club members did that. :-)

Saturday Sep 9, 2006 #

Running (paved) 54:09 [3] 4.4 mi (12:18 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

RTBlass loop (actually, a "balloon" with an almost mile-long string...) counter-clockwise. Felt better than the other day (less like plodding) though I still had to walk the hills. Mid 70's and humid.

Thursday Sep 7, 2006 #

Walking 32:36 [2] 1.9 mi (17:09 / mi)

To P.O., then back via Alb. Tpk. and Syring Rd. (looking for shade!). Temp. in lower 70's.

Wednesday Sep 6, 2006 #

Running (paved) 42:03 [3] 3.3 mi (12:45 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

66N to Pitts Rd. Temp. about 68 degrees. It felt really hard to run today for some reason.

Monday Sep 4, 2006 #

Walking 22:44 [2] 1.3 mi (17:29 / mi)

To P.O. and back. Temp around 68 degrees and cloudy.
