Running (dirt) 41:42 [3] 2.9 mi (14:23 / mi)

Hand Hollow, West Lebanon. Green trail west from Rt. 9 to the pond, then around the loop CCW, and return on green trail. A nice breeze kept the FDF squadron down to a minimum (I think I only killed a half-dozen +/-). Saw activity on the great blue heron nest! I'll have to go back with binoculars.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [3]

Last day at "The Firm" on Main Street. :-(

Instructor Jennifer has made arrangements to use the American Legion hall, which is tiny and may smell smoky...

Yard wrangling 1:00:00 [1]

Decided to log the weed pulling as gardening today instead of as a note -- it was hard, sweaty, and involved shoveling (but easier than the last time because the ground was damp from all the rain). I was actually out there for 2 hours, but am only counting 1/2 of that as training. STILL not done with the area above the rocks, but one more session should do it...

Running (dirt) 1:03:50 [3] *
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

80F and high humidity (with a shower at the end). Trail run/walk at Wilton Wildlife Preserve between Saratoga and Glen's Falls. Nice trail network in sandy soil (some of it Karner Blue Butterfly habitat) with not much elevation change (except for one 5m hill on one of the trails). Killed 2 FDF's and a number of DM's (dam' mosquitoes, due to lots of small marshes in some sections...).

Saturday Jun 24, 2006 #

Note

Rob's high school graduation! Two down, none to go. :-) Now, to figure out what to do with the empty nest next fall.....

Wednesday Jun 21, 2006 #

Note

Another hour of weed pulling (and digging -- those multiflora roses, and whatever the other woody thing is, are tough stuff!). Makin' progress, but more to go... Today certainly was a beautiful day to be outside, though!

Walking 24:00 [2] 1.3 mi (18:28 / mi)

In sandals. To the post office to pick up a package. I was just going to go to the mailbox (~0.3 round-trip) but there was a card saying there was a package, so I decided to go the extra mile (literally) :-) and pick it up as well; got the rest of the mail on the way back.

Note

Another 2 hours of pulling (and stretching and lifting--great core strength training) weeds. I didn't get this area done as anticipated a few days ago; these weeds are more stubborn, partly because it's the part I get to last (every time I weed there) and I get lazy and don't do a thorough job, allowing the weeds to get more secure. I'll get some more mulch and cover this area later.

Orienteering race (sprint) 27:45 [4] *** 2.5 km (11:06 / km)
spiked:10/10c shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Much easier sprints than yesterday, on a school district campus (3 elementary schools, a middle school and a high school all in one general area) with lots of road, trail, or open field running, not much climb (only 8 contour lines between the lowest and highest points on the entire area used). No mistakes, but hard to run due to heat and humidity (80s, sunny, and sticky!).

Orienteering race (sprint) 37:53 [4] *** 3.0 km (12:38 / km)
spiked:10/10c shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Second sprint on Bethel schools campus. Lots of good route choices on both this and the 1st sprint; thanks Rick (and the rest of WCOC for organizing them)!

Orienteering race (sprint) 32:11 [4] *** 1.74 mi (18:30 / mi) +65m 16:34 / mi
spiked:10/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

Showered on the drive down and stayed overcast for this sprint (and the next) and therefore cooler than it could have been. :-)

Sprint 35b at Sebago Beach, Harriman. I ran the most technical area sprint first and made 2 mistakes (going off in the wrong direction), but not absolutely major boo-boos, just a minute or so on #5 and about the same on #11 (wrong direction on trail), both in the same general area of the map, around the larger "clearing". Otherwise okay.

Orienteering race (sprint) 39:39 [4] *** 2.18 km (18:11 / km) +65m 15:50 / km
spiked:17/18c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

Sprint 45; actually saw people on this course. Craig W. passed me in the most intricate (interesting!) part near Seven Lakes Drive. I was unsure on #8 and checked another small dot knoll (that didn't look like a boulder) before finding the flag on another one. John F. came smoking through here at one point too.

Orienteering race (sprint) 28:25 [4] *** 1.93 km (14:43 / km) +55m 12:53 / km
spiked:14/14c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 (old)

I ran Sprint 35a last. This seems physically the easiest of the three courses. John F. came really smoking by me again between controls 7 and 8, finishing the course (which he had set) in about 10 minutes! Wow, that boy has legs (and talent)!!

Friday Jun 16, 2006 #

Note

Another hour of pulling weeds (and digging up some stubborn ones!). About another 1.5 to 2 hours left (up top) plus about 1/2 hour on another part that needs it. Three bags of mulch down; at least 3 more to go...

Thursday Jun 15, 2006 #

Running (paved) 40:23 [4] 3.3 mi (12:14 / mi)

66N. 65-68 F (nice!) I remember when I could run this out-and-back in 33 minutes or less...

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]

Sweated a lot, but more so because of the temperature/humidity than the workout.

Note

Purchased 3 bags of mulch today and spread them around the daylilies I have planted so far. I'll need at lesat 3 more bags before I'm done, but I have to finish weeding first. I'm giving my fingers a break today.

Walking 31:30 [2] 2.0 mi (15:45 / mi)

P.O.-route-plus to drop off some Father's Day cards to be mailed. Didn't push it (hot!).

Note

Another 1:45 or so of weeding, plus I planted the three new daylilies I purchased. Now I need to get some mulch!

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]

Back to exercise class after a session break. Jennifer has to relocate The Firm in a few weeks because the new landlord is kicking her out after who-knows-how-many years--he wants to use the space. Bummer!

Note

In addition to exercise class (where we did pushups--something I don't usually do--that I'm feeling now), I spent 1-1/2 hours pulling weeds. I'm trying to prepare an area that isn't cut with the mower and regular fills up with "weeds" and wildflowers ready to plant with daylilies which are supposed to help keep the weeds down... It's tough work, but someone's gotta do it. :-)

Running (dirt) hills 1:05:42 [3] 4.3 mi (15:17 / mi)

Pittstown State Forest near Brunswick, NY. Distance estimated (might have been a little bit longer). Started out running a slight downhill on a woods road, then gentle uphill on another one, for the 1st ~1.3mi. Then turned onto a mountain bike trail that was fairly flat at first, then climbed up a ridge, winding back and forth and wending its way around boulders and through really interesting forest before heading back downhill towards the parking area. Trails were quite muddy due to the rain we've had this past week. :-)

Finally found the Bikerag.com map -- http://www.bikerag.com/images/MAPS/ny_pittstown_re... We started on the road/trail intersection in the southeast corner; I went clockwise (i.e., down the road first) while Glen started up the hill on the bike trail (counterclockwise). We met on the bike trail, probably near it's NW-most point. I continued on CW, while Glen ran to the N-S old road then doubled back.

Stepping (bench) warm up/down 5:00 [2]

Some ab crunches first, then basic stepping to warm up...

Stepping (bench) 18:00 [3]

Active stepping. Tried to use a step video, but I couldn't keep up, and they were twirling too much (I can't do quick turnarounds or I'll get dizzy), so I just did my own thing and tried to keep up with the music, which was faster than I'm used to.

Yard wrangling 1:10:00 [1]

Pulling weeds (and dumping them)...

Monday Jun 5, 2006 #

Walking 31:14 [2] 2.0 mi (15:37 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #1

Sunday Jun 4, 2006 #

Running (dirt) 57:34 [3]
shoes: Trail NB 705 8.5D

Tibbitts State Forest near Hoosick Falls, NY. There is a trail that winds around a hilltop; Glen did the whole loop (4.3 mi) but I only went partway then back again, so we'd finish about the same time. Also went on a side trail (looped) to see an old lime kiln site from back when the area was used for that kind of thing (also a LOT of charcoal was made, though there aren't as many known charcoal platforms in the public lands as in, say, Macedonia Brook (CT) or French Creek (PA)). I'll figure out the length when I can get Gmaps to respond...

Orienteering 5:00 [1] *

After the sprints at Sebago Beach/Harriman were cancelled, Glen and I went to Woodbury Commons outlet center and spent too much money... but we picked up a map and found our way to different places. Barely worth recording... :-)

Walking 30:34 [3] 2.0 mi (15:17 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #1

Hot! (80F) and muggy...drenched by the time I got back home.
