Exploring the Hugh Moore Park and Lehigh Canal in Easton, followed by beer tasting at the Weyerbacher Brewery (and quesadillas which were being sold by a separate vendor/"food truck").

Mostly sunny, low 70s...how could we stay inside?

Hiking 45:00 [2]
shoes: Sauc TriumphISO-silver/gr/blue

At Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in Emmaus, off Rt 29, after getting my car inspected for PA registration. I guess we're officially PA residents now.

I missed the turn off Riverbend Rd because it was missing a sign, but eventually ended up where I wanted to be. Walked most of the trails here which are grass, wood chips, boardwalk, or dirt (most-used ones). Gentle climb up to a high point, then I decided not to descend stone stairs to connect to the sensory trail (which I think is paved, partly) which loops through a field.

The park has an environmental education center and fenced areas with an owl, some kind of raptor, and a vulture (one other division didn't have anything I could see). It also has a trail with PA tree ID tags so a good place to take students/kids needing to do a tree ID project (like I did in biology class). The red pine, though, is only a stump.

Walking 50:50 [3] 2.3 mi (22:06 / mi)
shoes: Sauc TriumphISO-silver/gr/blue

Then back to the Little Lehigh Parkway trail, heading south/west this time and crossing under I 78 to visit the trout hatchery/nursery. I'd never seen a golden rainbow trout before but they had quite a few there. Doesn't seem like it would be sporting to stock streams with them as they stand out from the rest.

Distance estimated and includes 10 minutes of wandering around the nursery pools.

Temperature was probably in the mid to upper 60s for both hikes, partly sunny. Gorgeous day for February!

I wanted to get outside because it was almost 60, so I started out, but stopped to chat with neighbors for a bit, so I just did a loop around the block plus to the end of one street to check building progress.

Yoga 50:00 intensity: (45:00 @1) + (5:00 @2)
slept:7.0

Stability was the focus. First time I ever balanced on one foot...on a yoga block. I've balanced on squishy mats before but not on a squishy surface three inches in the air. Some other more-than-usual intensity stuff today too. Very good class.

Trexler Nature Preserve hike near the Lehigh Co Zoo. General Trexler donated the land to protect elk and bison about a hundred years ago.

Lots of climb on the blue trail made me suggest an alternative plan to Glen from our original route. Lovely park; lots of folks out on this gorgeous 60+ degree day.

Route: from the parking area at The Ford, near the center of the map (see link above) where the road fords the Jordan Creek, we took the blue trail on the west side of the creek and crossed a footbridge, climbed a spur to a view point (#13), then (instead of our original plan to return via the blue trail and then take the teal trail to the environmental education center) took the road past the bison (about 8-10 in a fenced wooded area) to the red trail and then to the eec. We returned via Old Packhouse Rd to the red trail at Geiger's Covered Bridge, opting to take the west side because several large groups started up the east side at about the same time.

Saucon Valley Rail Trail from Reading Drive parking lot to N end in Hellertown, not far from Goodman fields where Lehigh sports teams play. My side excursion near the N end was apparently an iron works at one point but I didn't explore trails much there because I wasn't sure what was there, and had a long way to go to return to the car.

Gorgeous day; lots of folks on the trail. About mid to upper 40s when I started and mid to upper 50s when I finished.

At a park I passed by (which has a basketball court, playground, and BMX area and hosts the outdoor Farmers Market in season), I saw a woman standing outside the portable toilet and as I passed by I heard a small voice say "How do you flush it?"

Her reply: "You don't." :-)

Aberdene St neighborhood with two balloons, plus an extra loop around the block near the house. Some houses still not finished so neither is the sidewalk in front of those houses. 41 and breezy but not as windy as yesterday.

Watching the roof trusses and sheathing go up two houses away from us, as they work on finishing the houses across the street. The one directly across is almost ready to be moved into.

To the end of W Hopewell and back, with a loop through the Curly Horse development.

Excellent February weather; ~55 and mostly sunny with a bit of a west breeze. Forecast for tomorrow is a high of 30 with 4-8" of snow. We'll hunker down.

Note

Went to the clubhouse when the PT folks from St Luke's were there to learn about the different machines. Intended to go back later to work out, but didn't. Tomorrow...

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Today's focus was hips and hip openers...I tolerated it pretty well during class (using additional padding for my right knee) but I'm not sure my right hip enjoyed it so much. No reverse planks for me while doing the bent-leg seated hip stretch; I just kept stretching my hips.

Other (kayaking) 1:46:28 [1] 2.89 mi (36:50 / mi)
slept:6.0

More arm than leg exercise, though AP imported this as "walking." :-)

We had planned to kayak the river at Myakka River SP but the water level (dependent on rainfall) was pretty low--noticeably lower than the previous time we'd visited the park--and would have been doing more portaging than paddling. So we found this kayaking center on the island where Fort DeSoto was, at the north entrance to Tampa Bay, and rented two solo kayaks. The water was pretty smooth the entire time (breeze picked up in the afternoon). Not a whole lot of bird sightings, but enough to make it interesting. Fun!

Got a small blister on one thumb until I changed my grip (just another in my list of small injuries this week).
1 PM

Walking (sandy trails) 1:28:36 [1] 2.0 mi (44:18 / mi)

After we were done kayaking, and had a snack, we hiked on the nature trails near the kayaking center, called soldier's hole. There were some interpretive signs (Eagle scout project), but they haven't been maintained lately so some were missing.

Interesting AOWN moments: a number of weird looking spiders had webs across or along the trail; and we saw a snake at the top of one of the palm tree carcasses (stump, or trunk without leaves). Will have to look at pictures to ID.
4 PM

Walking 1:09:24 [1] 1.99 mi (34:52 / mi) +2m 34:46 / mi

At Fort DeSoto, while Glen ran. I looked around the fort first, then went out the 1000' fishing pier that sticks into the Gulf, taking photos of opportunistic birds on the pier (white egret, cattle egret, sandpipers, brown pelican), and a porpoise or dolphin who I think was trying to steal fishermen's bait. Continued around the point and then cut back through where officer and troop buildings had been (early 1900s was when the fort was built) when it was time to meet up with Glen. Big guns--still in place--were made at Watervliet Arsenal (in 1900-01) which is located across the river from Troy, NY and north of Albany. All in all a nice last day in FL for this trip. Early flight tomorrow.

Myakka River State Park, near Sarasota. After a morning checking out 'gators; great blue, little blue, tricolored, and we think at least one green heron; wood storks; roseate spoonbills (we overheard someone calling them Rosetta spoonbills); and various other water birds, we hiked a trail we hadn't visited last time we were here before (2-3 years ago) from a parking area near the bridge and along the river.

Walking 52:02 [2] 2.0 mi (26:01 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Trail past the Homesweet Meadow Ranch site. Saw two sandhill cranes near the trail junction, perhaps the same two we had seen earlier in the day on the road out to the Birdwalk. Ranch site has just a couple of artifacts remaining, plus an interpretive sign.

Most interesting thing we noted besides the cranes was the evidence of wild pigs rooting around in the soft sand on either side of the sandy road we were walking on (and a few times in the median).

Honeymoon Island SP
Hiked on the Osprey and Pelican trails. Saw lots of osprey and nests, a pair of eagles and a nest, and a kestrel (I think; or two). We did not see the advertised Great Horned Owl, but dd see a gopher tortoise, and paw prints of what's probably a raccoon. Saw at least one pelican from the Pelican trail, too. :-)

Low 70s; lots and lots of sun.

Walking (beach) 47:53 [2] 2.07 mi (23:08 / mi)

Glen wanted to run trails (and I didn't), so I hiked up the beach along the bay. Shells were mostly sunbleached and broken but saw an interesting large bivalve (will ID later) and a small conch-shaped shell. And seabirds.
