Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Nice to be back to Chatham; I missed all the inner thigh exercises. :-) Was quizzed on Arizona, just a little.

I think I missed the early discussion where the instructor mentioned her namesake who was up for best supporting actress (but didn't win for Winter's Bone).

Snowshoe (jog/hike) 45:38 [3] 1.99 mi (22:58 / mi) +32m 21:52 / mi
shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Ran/hiked around back fields following tracks Glen (re)broke yesterday. There were ski tracks (from next door neighbor) with accompanying dog tracks, along with wildlife (fox? coyote? rabbit, too) tracks to keep me interested.

Took a little side jaunt in neighbor's field out towards the highway, just to do something different.

Walking 22:00 [2] 1.35 mi (16:18 / mi)
slept:8.0

To PO to mail bills, membership renewals, and a couple of race entries. May take a longer walk this afternoon as it's sunny and nicer than it wil be tomorrow. I'm skipping the Moody Springs SS race tomorrow as my left glute is not 100% good and I'd like to orienteer this spring. ;-)

rhr:50 slept:8.0

Shoveling slop at the ends of the driveway and down by the mailboxes (where once again my timing was perfect--two plows came by to make the job a bit easier). Didn't help my sore shoulder any, but I don't think I made it worse either.

Weight took a roller coaster ride this past week; guess it's partly a function of different diet and odd schedules. It's back to where it was before we left. Strange.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]
slept:6.5

Back to (core) work. Used weights and did more floor work (including warm up) than usual. Was able to do more on my (right knee) than I have in 16 months, ever since I bruised it (bone bruise?) at the US champs in Wisconsin in '09.

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Cybex moving-arm arc trainer elliptical machine so I could exercise my arms more (and use them to help the legs when they tired). Didn't notice the glute muscle using this machine. I did notice it cramped up a little while trying to sleep last night, though; what's up with that?

Note

Travel day, home from AZ. Tucson is a wonderful place to escape from the northeast. Cloudy taking off from Cleveland so I didn't open the window shade until the Catskills where they announced we'd be landing in 15 minutes. Flew practically right over our house (couldn't see it; wrong side of the plane) and probably could have picked out Charlie's and walk's if we'd known exactly where to look (we did see the reservoirs near Charlie and the little town of Simsbury...).

Hiking 1:53:08 [1] 4.35 mi (26:00 / mi) +139m 23:39 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Sabino Canyon hike (Coronado State Forest near Tucson, AZ), starting on the trail towards Bear Canyon. Back to visitors center via trail to Sabino Dam. It was intriguing to see some of the places that the younger saguaros were putting down roots (on top of rocks and boulders!). Lots of other park users (as apparently is always the case; they have a huge parking area) on the trails too.

We hiked after having driven on the Catalina Highway (Sky Islands Scenic Byway) to the ski area (closed) and back. Interesting to see the vegetation changes (saguaro last seen around 4000' near the Molino Canyon vista).

[note to self: Catalina Highway; Santa Catalina Mountains, though also referred to as Catalina Mountains per Wikipedia...]

Hiking 3:00:35 [1] 5.1 mi (35:26 / mi) +60m 34:11 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Hiked trails at Saguaro National Park (east) outside of Tucson, in the 'bajadas' of the Rincon Mountains, among the many types of cactus in addition to saguaros. (Go to the NPS website for neat photos of the flora and fauna of the park.)

Birds: hawk (possibly a young red-tailed), cactus wren, gila woodpecker, and phainopepla, which looks like a black cardinal with a fluffy crest. I looked, but did not see any roadrunners. :-( No snakes, either.

Learned that there used to be a lot more saguaros here before the 1930s when there was a hard freeze that killed many of them. There was another hard freeze in the '60s, and scientists have determined that a freeze lasting longer than 20 hours (or thereabouts) can cause damage to young, old, or infirm saguaros. We saw a number of them with drooping arms, and a few remnants of dead 'trees,' some of which have a scarecrow-y type look. There was an article in today's local paper about the recent freezing weather possibly affecting some saguaros. And they do a census every 10 years!

The interior structure is amazing, with a woody framework surrounding an absorbent core and covered by the accordion shaped flesh that can expand and contract depending on water levels. (learn more)

Way cool. And actually, it was a lovely day to hike in the desert, sunny but temps in the low 60s so comfortable in long sleeves (good to keep the sun off too).

I forgot and left my FR on one-second recording...

spiked:10/11c rhr:54 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Decided on the red course today, as I was feeling okay after yesterday. Much nicer orienteering challenges. Missed #1 by a bit as I was headed for the wrong vegetation object and had to curve around the top of a reentrant. Other not-quite-optimum routes but all other controls were where I looked for them. A different course setter today on a slightly different area (though same parking and finish) offered more challenge (and more climb!).

Nice weather too, mid 40s and cloudy (no sunscreen!) made the uphills that much more pleasant.

EDIT: added FR track; FR measured 7.88 km covered distance.

Afterward we drove through the canyon part of Box Canyon to the west which would be quite impressive with water rushing through it. Then did the tour at the Titan II missile museum where the last remaining (unused) Titan II missile sits in its silo. Cover is permanently half-open (glass cover) so that the Russians can 'see' that it couldn't be launched. Saw the control room where they never had to 'turn the keys' (simulated a launch, though, with a couple of volunteers). Quite interesting.

Followed by too much Mexican food for dinner. ;-)

Orienteering race (desert) 1:07:17 [3] *** 3.9 km (17:15 / km) +118m 14:59 / km
spiked:7/9c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

FR distance is ~5.3 km, advertised was 3.9 km with 185 m climb

Green course at TSN O-Club meet on Box Canyon map. Thought a lot of the legs were a bit orange-ish but managed to mess up the two that were advanced difficulty. :-) Probably lost about 6-8 minutes total on the two (numbers 7 and 8). First one was from not reading the description (and looking for the wrong feature); second was from missing which tree the control flag was hung from (I had figured out by this point that the controls were often disguised inside trees -- usually mesquite -- near the circled feature but this one was on a shrub instead) and going a bit too far.

Otherwise I did well, and the course was fun (not brutal). And I was even able to jog some. Hamstring/glute is not nearly as achy as it was but still requires careful stretching.

Terrain reminded me of Laramie except for higher grass (no sage but you had to watch out for some poke-y cacti). Weather was gorgeous, low 60s and breezy, despite the forecast for rain and wind. We had wind, but only a few showers after we left the meet site.

Afterward we visited a Nature Conservancy riparian preserve near Patagonia and saw a few new (to me) birds -- black phoebe and black vulture plus some kind of hawk we really didn't identify. And there was a cute little western screech owl sleeping in a tree right where the preserve "keepers" said it would be.

Back to Tucson by way of Nogales; we stayed out of Mexico. :-)

Spent most of the day at the Arizona Desert Museum--learned more about desert flora and fauna. A very nice setup; it's been here for over 50 years in one configuration or another. The map was excellent.

Saw plenty of (enclosed) snakes and spiders; javelinas; sleepy foxes, wolves, and bobcats. And just a few cactuses ;-) .

On National Trail, South Mountain State Park near Phoenix, AZ, while Glen ran. Parked at Buena Vista parking area.

Saw a hummingbird and a rabbit (not sure if it was a jackrabbit--I think they're bigger than this one).

Post-hike/run walk was from parking out to a lookout north of the parking area. Track is just from the walk back, as I forgot to turn it on earlier.

Snowshoe race. Left hamstring/glute still sore (since last weekend's race) so I didn't want to push anything. Okay during warm up jog, so decided to run the whole thing, and slow down if I needed to.

After the first mile and a half or so my hamstring was making itself felt (though more achy than painful), so it wasn't really a "race" for me, but more a snowshoe jog. No energy anyway. After mile 3, an older-than-me woman who was race walking was going faster than I was jogging! Pitiful.

Slower than the last two times I've run this race (1:08 last year, 1:09 in 2009). RHR has been higher this week (57-61 bpm vs ~54 typical), too.

Thought I was last until the final U-turn where I saw 3 folks behind me; turned out there were another 4 behind them (155 / 162). I sat in a snowbank for a few minutes after I finished to "ice" the muscles. ;-)

Good post-race food and raffle prizes, like last week. Saratoga Stryders puts on a good couple of races; this is the third time we've done both.

FR set on 1-second recording; I don't think the climb is correct; there were a few hills but nothing too drastic. Measured longer than last year.

We used rings (my favorite tool). Lunges, which on my left leg I had to cut short. Other exercises involving legs worked fine.

Fitness equipment 15:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Three aborted attempts to do some other aerobic exercise. I had already discarded the idea of doing intervals, but thought bicycle or elliptical would be okay. Elliptical uncomfortable; five minutes on treadmill uncomfortable; even bike not good (didn't help that the bike I was on kept hiccupping periodically like a slipping gear). Dome.

Anti-inflammatory and ice when I get home. What is this, AP butt/hamstring syndrome?

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Yay--this included step today. Still favoring my left hamstring (arabesques in particular seem tough), but otherwise no problems. Even managed to have 'bouncy' legs during the aerobics portion which is rare (perhaps due to resting legs yesterday?).
3 PM

Walking 54:25 [2] 3.53 mi (15:26 / mi) +81m 14:24 / mi
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 5

Braced myself for the mid-20s and got out the door. Fingers warmed up after a mile... then I was okay. I couldn't see the (old Albany Tpk) mile marker when I turned around as it was buried under the snow, but the FR said I'd gone the right distance.

Other (Core) 15:00 [1]

No Pilates class because of school delay; I put off going to the Y; considered going snowshoeing out back but by then it was 21 F and windy.

So I did some of the Pilates routines that I remembered.

Then read a (kid's) book from the library, When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead. If you've ever read any of the Madeleine l'Engle books, give it a try.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Left hamstring was tightening up during the last km of the snowshoe race, so I was a bit cautious during some of the aerobics moves today. Left knee decided it wanted some attention too, but it's doing okay now.

Chopped up some ice near the garage, but the bulk remains. We need a bunch of warmish sunny days to get rid of it. Anyone want to skate?

Snowshoe race 41:28 [5] 3.1 mi (13:22 / mi) +70m 12:29 / mi
shoes: Dion 121 snowshoes

Saratoga Spa winterfest race. Lots of people, super conditions. Snow very packed down in the track (but you didn't want to leave it or the snow was deep and soft) so conditions were 'fast,' relatively. The course starts around a field so you see where are relative to the field and I was about in the middle, amazingly. Okay, people did pass me, but not right away. Pleased with my time; FR track later. Resuts were out of order when we left; hope they get them fixed up okay.

EDIT: Uploaded FR track. Seems they fixed the results. I placed 140/202. Must be partly a function of all the people out there just walking the course, and partly where I "seeded" myself in the run around the first field. I was motivated to keep running on all the flat areas (there were only 2 decent climbs) and to keep up with the two ladies right in front of me at the finish (who I just could not pass). Next up, Camp Saratoga next Saturday. So far the weather's looking great!

At the Y, where the lot could be better plowed, but today's temps may help.

Had to shovel plow-crap (again!) from the driveway ends to make it out. Some of the snow went back onto the road shoulder, as they plow WAY back to make the road wider, because they can. I left the small boulder-sized snowball next to the drive.

Incline 0.5-3.0%. Didn't want to push things because my left foot has been hurting again. Will run again when there's no metatarsal pain.

Note

Sleet instead of heavy snow today -- I'll take it.

1 PM

Shoveling (strength) 20:00 [2]

After the snow/sleet tapered off (6" Tuesday and another ~4" overnight before it changed to sleet) I walked to the mailboxes to start clearing in front of them. They're situated at the intersection of a county road and a state road (along the state road), with a town road coming in nearby.

I found that the plows had cleared the road but not the shoulder in front of the boxes (yet) so I got to work on the 7' or so (by however long the arc is -- 20-30'?) inside the line. Got about a 6' section shoveled high over the snowbank (which fills up a culvert which will likely be plugged come meltdown) when the county plow did a couple of swipes to move a bunch out of my way (thank you county!).

After another 5-10 minutes, the state plow comes by scraping the shoulder, and they push off a bit more. I loosened up more snow right in close to the boxes, when a local plow guy motioned me to the side and pushed a bit more out of the way. ;-) So I was left with just about a foot out from the boxes to neaten up instead of the original 7' or so. Just had to wait a bit.
2 PM

Walking 24:00 [2] 1.35 mi (17:46 / mi)

In my heavy winter boots, to the Post Office to mail the USOF recharter for EMPO, and pick up the mail that hadn't been delivered to the mailboxes because of the 7' x 2' deep of plowed stuff.

Stopped along the way to talk to a neighbor who's lived in town for 40+ years and never seen icicles on her house like this year's icicles (neither have we, after 30 years). She was shoveling the plowed slush from her driveway and carrying it across the street to throw over the bank because there was nowhere left on her property to put it.

At least we didn't have the bitter cold and wind that some places in the midwest (plus WY and Texas and NM!) had.

Note

In Swampfox's log for Tuesday Feb 1 --
"-27F...that's on the other side of chilly!"

That kinda puts today's mid-teens (+) in perspective. ;-)
10 AM

Note
slept:7.5

Decided not to drive 20 minutes (each way) to exercise at the Y and then have to clear snow off my car. Roads aren't all that great either. Better to leave the car in the garage and find something to do at home (core DVD? or at least the step). Low teens is a bit on the cold side for me to snowshoe outside.

A few photos from the chili supper at Maple Tree Cafe on Sunday afternoon.
