Orienteering race (sprint A) 32:03 [3] *** 2.09 km (15:20 / km) +55m 13:33 / km
ahr:137 max:160 spiked:9/12c slept:7.0 shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

After rain this morning (we got 1.5"+ at home) it was nice at Ratlum but on the damp side so I never bothered with my glasses. Used my magnifier where needed with the 1:3500 map. :-) Nominal stats 1.6 km, 65m climb.

Sprint relay leg 1 at Ratlum; I got to go out in the mass start but didn't make it back in time to tag off to Glen. :-(

Fine to 1 behind the pack who were also on my sprint, then they ran away and I never saw anyone again on my course. Tried to go through the woods to 3 after coming out onto the big trail but was closer to the neighbor's house than I felt prudent so went back around the green tripping over stuff in the woods. I should have done what I always tell myself to do at Ratlum which is stick to trails as much as possible between controls.

Took large trail between 4 and 5 but still managed to exit the trail too early, then I misread the terrain between the trail and 6 and wandered in the woods north of the "marsh" before correcting (marsh was dry). Did okay from there in, though slow.

Track downloaded.

Orienteering race (sprint B) 25:38 [4] *** 2.01 km (12:46 / km) +40m 11:37 / km
ahr:138 max:153 spiked:8/10c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

After a bit of rest and some water, headed out on my second course without waiting for Glen to come in (Charlie took pity on me, I think, after my leg 1 excursion). Nominal 1.7 km, 60 m climb. An easier course than sprint A with controls closer to trails, this more "sprint" like.

Fine to 1 but overran 2 by a little, correcting from the rocky ground just before the trail junction. To 3 I took the third trail to the left after heading east, then turned left at the bottom of the hill. To number 6 I expected it to be just a little more downhill from the trail junction but it really was on the same contour level. I should have just gone straight into the woods from there, so it also doesn't count as a spike. From 9-10 I angled up through the woods to the main E-W trail, then skirted the edge of the field to get to the dot knoll.
