Walking warm up/down (to start) 15:00 [2]
shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-B 2013-10

To start of Day 2, Round Mountain map, similar weather to Saturday. Meet notes called it a 750 m walk.

Arrived early enough to hang around for a bit, congratulate Claire Dell of OCIN for her and her husband's win of a Golden Troll Award on Saturday, and chat with a few other folk before warming up briefly to make sure my knees would still work. I'd fallen again coming out of #3 yesterday, and bashed the right knee again, but not as hard (sore triceps later showed I'd caught myself with my arms this time rather than all on the knee).

Orienteering race (classic day 2) 57:02 [4] *** 5.47 km (10:25 / km) +89m 9:38 / km
spiked:11/11c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-B 2013-10

The test today was to put out of mind my placing from day 1 as I've often gotten mentally distracted by my competition instead of focussing on the orienteering. I was successful and was clean on all the controls, finishing with a time I was okay with on the 4.9km / 70m course with more technical placements than on day 1.

I started at 10:03, and the last results posted were just before noon with only 3 of 6 in my class, so I didn't know how I'd done relative to Beatrice... until the awards, where I was called up as the winner. !!!

I talked to her later and she said she'd had a big mistake on our #6 finding our #3 flag but not realizing it was one she had already visited. Bummer for her, but lucky break for me. My first US Classic Champs age group win, and I think only the second overall champs win (Middle at Moses Lake Sand Dunes in Washington state several years ago). Nice.

Note

Thunderstorms were threatening to the east so we left just before it hit M Lazy C Ranch, but not before we got back to our lodging... When we got out to US 24 it had started raining, and a few minutes later it was hailing, and then accumulating on the road...winter driving conditions! Temp dropped quickly (per the car's thermometer) from the 60s to mid 40s by the time we made it to the house. Exciting.
