Orienteering race 1:14:50 [4]
Midland Champs - Bentley Woods.
Enjoyed this. Lovely day helped. Used Northern estate bit as well as the main woodland block gave some variety and added to some route choice challenge.
I failed with the latter - looking at route to 3, I am sure now going north of the lake woiuld have been faster - same distance but perhaps 25m less climb, and much more gradual / runnable gradients. Will check again once more people have put their routes on Routegadget, but Splits browser would suggest at least 2 minutes loss. In retrospect two failures - 1) not reading ahead whilst on the relatively straigthtforward leg to 1. 2) rushing my decision when I got to two. Should have been prepared to stand still and invest 10s to get it right. Actually thinking about it maybe a third failure; If I had thought about it and geeked a bit more with the old map, I would have realised there might be some route choice challenges in the estate bit, and I knew we would be starting and finishing there. If I had, had that in my head a bit more, maybe I could have avoided failures 1 & 2 ?
A bad miss on 9 as well. Knew I had to be carefull with direction from final attack point, but managed to drift a bit off line, got a bit confused with shallow ditches and veg. Relocated erroneously on a path ditch jct beyond, so had to have a third go - another 2.5 minute loss .
Ok for the rest, predictably enough sped up a bit when Tim Tett went past, but could only stay in contact for about 4 controls.
