jogging 2:40:00 [4] 23.09 km (6:56 / km)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings B

Path jogging in Red Deer...slow start, then had to do a conference call for G20 in TO then finally got going. Hit friend Lianna's house at 15kms (forgot to stop my watch for bit). Had nice visit then off to the Red Deer College trails which were mostly single tract and NOT PAVEMENT!!!

Trail Run 45:26 [4] * 7.06 km (6:26 / km)
ahr:101 max:125 rhr:45 slept:8.0 weight:137lbs shoes: Salomon XT Wings B

Bill's Wildrose AGM was running longer than we thought so i headed up to Discovery Canyon and ran the golf course perimeter trail (chickened out on the hiller stuff in the canyon)....but it felt great to run a bit looser, with no pack and on a dirt trail in the shade of the trees. Temperature all day was perfect for running at around 21 - 23. Total for day was 30kms which was my goal. It was just broken up in bits - 15kms mostly paved trails, 7.5 dirt single track then another 7.5 shaded clay trail. All in all a good day!! Red Deer has terrific bike paths and most of the green space/parks are linked (friend said 71 kms of linked trail plus real road bike paths - ie lane sectioned off). Calgary could do with more of this!!

biking 59:00 [3] 21.0 km (2:49 / km)

Raced to get here before Bill & Nicole in the car and did! What a joy to ride in the warm weather...13 is perfect for a morning ride. River is high but not over flowing yet...and puddles had dried up enough I could avoid most...
6 PM

biking 56:00 [2] 22.0 km (2:33 / km)

Nice ride home. The warm weather was perfect. Quiet path when I leave this late...

biking 1:04:57 [2] 21.2 km (3:04 / km)
slept:6.0

Very slow ride in this morning...luckily no serious wind but I did get rained on at Riverbend/Carburn park...stopped by Bonneybrook bridge but the trail was very wet and thus I was very splattered! 6hours was not enough sleep!
6 PM

biking 59:00 [3] 22.0 km (2:41 / km)

Made it home without getting rained on...actually had to stop and take my jacket off it was too warm....but it was puddle mania and I was mud splattered again when I got home. I admit by Douglasdale I was doing nothing to avoid the puddles...mud and water flying everywhere!!!

jogging 3:24:50 [3] 15.1 km (13:34 / km) +1422m 9:13 / km
shoes: Salomon XT Wings B

Jog/hike up to Mist ridge with Charlotte. Beautiful 360degree view of Mist Mtn and Storm Mtn (both over 10,000 ft)...How wonderful to be so high up at 9pm! Made it back to the parking lot for 10pm (the whole experience seemed great until next morning)...

orienteering race 53:03 [5] *** 6.55 km (8:06 / km) +347m 6:24 / km
26c shoes: Salomon XT Wings B

4.6km One man relay - three loops and 26 controls (I think)...first loop on Snake Hill in forest but pretty easy legs - flew by number 7...second loop was in the Red Deer River valley and the third in the residential area basically looping around the hospital. My legs were really toast by the end as I watched the others all blow by me....Great weekend of training however!!!

orienteering 1:27:12 [4] 5.86 km (14:53 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: Icebugs -

First training session with Magnus. Great legs and really tough controls...only got to 11 (missed 12 to 14). Thought I was doing well - keeping my flow, continuous movement, anticipating what I should see but I made a few mistakes (like wanting a hill to be much bigger!!) and had to "go back" and begin again. Funny how I was able to move faster once I recovered from my mistakes...
4 PM

orienteering 1:24:45 [5] *** 7.46 km (11:22 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: Icebugs -

Great exercise where parts of the map were missing. Idea was to rely more on compass....I think I did well although I totally chickened out at number 10 and used the map to go around the big extra hill and swamp blanked out on the map....added a 1km to my course. I was slow and careful in the parts we had a narrow corridor of map...I generally blasted across the blank map legs except number 10...fun to watch on the big screen the gps courses of Gerraint, Greg, Inor and me after dinner Sat night...I really can speed up if I need to...

orienteering 1:40:17 [3] **** 6.62 km (15:09 / km)
shoes: Icebugs -

Went out to check the flags hung by Gary for the training camp. How peaceful and nice to be in the forest (Sundre Coyote Canyon - forgot how nice that area is - but lots of deadfall did make continuous running tough). Only saw deer and Gary once!

jogging 1:26:17 [3] 10.44 km (8:16 / km)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings B

Nice evening jog in Sandy Cross conservation area with Charlotte. They have pretty mowed grass trails (great for sore legs!!) and lots of short hills. I will be back!

biking 5:43:11 [5] 74.7 km (4:36 / km) +836m 4:21 / km

Dreams do come true! Finally biked the Highwood Pass before the gate opened to car traffic. Went with Charlotte and JP who had speedy racing bikes while I was on my sturdy mountain bike (duh)...17kms up then 20kms down then 20kms back up and the grand finale down that last and steepest 17kms again (we did the north gate and back - just short of the south gate)...Lots of stops (mostly for my benefit!)...what an amazing day. Not a cloud in the sky and all sorts of people out enjoying the day. i got sun burnt!

Tuesday Jun 8, 2010 #

8 AM

biking 1:10:00 [3] 21.0 km (3:20 / km)

Well that wonderful wind going with me last night was totally against me the entire ride in this morning....I did do an extra hill - Diamond Cove to avoid the dirt track on the east side of the river. I finally saw the round abouts on the bike trail JP had mentioned...funning! Nice to be able to ride the entire way on pavement and not get too muddy...but I sure needed the shower when I got here!

Monday Jun 7, 2010 #

biking 1:00:00 [2] 21.0 km (2:51 / km)

Slow ride in to work this morning...nice surprise at the beginning as Molly decided to ride to school with me. Legs did't have much energy. I didn't have a coffee this morning (or yesterday) maybe I need it in the morning...nice to ride in the sun. It almost feels like summer - can it be!!
6 PM

biking 52:00 [3] 21.0 mi (2:29 / mi)

Wonderful ride with the wind and made it home without getting wet! Somehow the storm missed me...I had to deal with a few big puddles though....

jogging 3:00:34 [5] 23.31 km (7:45 / km) +1048m 6:19 / km
shoes: adidas trailrunners

Day 2 of my virtual training weekend with Charlotte. Had to run to my neighbours house to make it to 3 hrs! Wow. Harder than I thought today.Although I did seven hills I am not sure I believe my garmin's climb calculation. Well, slow start - it was very hot in the sunshine. I decided to go up every hill that came along beside my trail. It was actually nice in the shade for most of them. Not sure I like these trail runners. Too much pressure on my left foot.
I tried to stay off the pavement and on the single tracks going west this time in Fish Creek. I actually ran the mountain bike trails at Volters Flats and ended up back at Macleod. Oh well, I took it as a sign to head back. I saw deer, grey herring (big one) and a coyote - real close! Glad this day is over!

jogging 2:40:31 [5] 23.81 km (6:44 / km)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings B

First virtual training with Charlotte! Took awhile to get out of the house...thunderstorm started on my first try so I chickened out and waited until mid afternoon. Lovely run in the sunshine. I was a bit hot as I still had a long sleeve shirt on. First 10kms were very slow at 1 hr 13 minutes. Stomach a bit upset too...I did manage to take in cliff blocks every 25 minutes or so and I did soak my feet in ice water for at least 10 minutes (until they were numb) ....ready for tomorrow!!

Friday Jun 4, 2010 #

9 AM

biking 1:25:00 [2] 22.0 km (3:52 / km)

Slowest ride to work ever!!! I took my time and just enjoyed the views of the mountains and spotted baby animals (geese and ducks)...Just did not want to actually get to work!
6 PM

biking 55:00 [3] 21.0 km (2:37 / km)

Speedier ride home...good time to leave the office as no cars on theroad so I took the street (9th Ave) to the trail....

Wednesday Jun 2, 2010 #

orienteering 20:00 [2] 3.1 km (6:27 / km)
shoes: adidas trailrunners

Shadowing course 2 again...this time the little fellow could run up the darn hill - nose hill!! I was sluggish and actually looking forward to when he needed to stop and read the map!!!

Tuesday Jun 1, 2010 #

biking 57:00 [3] 21.0 km (2:43 / km)

Great ride in this morning - lots of pelicans on the river...but plan was to run in. I used every excuse in the book to delay and thus "had" to ride in due to time. To make up I will run home. Getting excited about training now that it is June 1st and it looks like the snowy conditions have finally gone (knock on wood!)...
6 PM

jogging 2:20:00 [4] 20.6 km (6:48 / km)

I'll have to check that time on my watch...I forgot it this morning.
FINALLY!!! I had trouble again getting going out of the office. Even had to say no to beers with some out of towners from Bell Cda who wanted to meet. Took 9th Ave to trail and every short cut thus the lower kms. Ran on side of trail in grass or dirt where ever I could. Took my short cut at Carburn Park and had to take my shoes & socks off to walk in the water as my stepping stones were underwater (and slippery). Actually, this was really fun and the fisherman who came to see if I had drowned really thought I was nuts (but laughed). Cold water felt great!
Legs seem okay this morning but I am tired. Will have to see how orienteering goes tonight.
