Green Ridge State Forest near Flintstone, MD. Planned on doing a ~5 hour hike with Sandy at a park near where we are staying overnight before race timing tomorrow.
Drove from Arlington, and it rained for the first 90 minutes out of DC, then stopped as soon as we turned west. Despite the overnight rain in the park area, the trails were pretty dry.
Started out at 11 AM, and a plan which turned out to be too ambitious after encountering some poor footing, and scary climbs and descents about 1.75 miles into the planned route. We were able to bail to something better suited thanks to Sandy's fine navigating. Soldiered on and eventually settled on getting 10 miles in, which we achieved just before reaching the parking lot.
The temperature remained tolerable throughout the day, though a bit warmed then I like it to be. I didn't dip into any of the streams, but I did pour some cold water from my camelbak on my back and head. This helped a lot.
I used two walking sticks, which were invaluable on the uphills.
Miles. Tracks on Monday.
