O Training (McKeldin Controls) 1:38:00 [2] *** 4.0 mi (24:30 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs - Green

Put out the control boxes for today's annual QOC Beer Chase. Started at 9:15 AM, and it was already too hot for me. I guess the backpack didn't help matters, at least on my sweaty back.

A couple of hiccups early on, and then totally hosed 112 and 113. Tried to get an assist from some non-orienteers who were disc golfing, but the only bags they had seen were the little ones for the Streamer-O.

Getting frustrated and going to head in and get Francis to hang these two boxes, but I then ran into a group of orienteers who were disc golfing, including McKeldin mapmaker, Ted G, and he pointed me in the right direction.

Turns out I was determined to stay up on the top, but the controls were 1 and 2.5 controls down from the top. Wasted about 14 minutes on this issue.

Back to the nearby start/finish area, and I decided it was going to be way too hot at 1 PM to participate in the mass start beer chase.

I give this effort a 2. Though I pretty much walked the whole time, the climb was lots.

Orienteering race (Beer Chase - short) 45:00 [3] *** 3.5 km (12:51 / km)
shoes: Ice Bugs - Green

Well, I guess I wasn't quite done yet, especially when I learned my mistake in thinking the Short Beer Chase was loops 1 & 2, when it was actually loops 2 & 3. Loop 1 was a bear, and I had been to those controls in mostly the running order this morning, so I didn't want to go there again.

Loops 2 & 3 were a bit more manageable. Well, maybe I would do the Short. Back into the orienteering shoes, and got ready for the 1 PM mass start. Did I mention how darn hot it is at 1 PM?!

Actually didn't get out right away, because I had to register a late starter, resolve why my pre-runner was a mispunch (she didn't know about punching IN and OUT of the beer control at the end), and get my compass. I got straightened out and got going about 2:20 late, and comically, I started going the wrong way,.

Lost one place because of the late start, ironically to the guy who got there late. But, since I had been to all of the controls, we'll call it my penalty time. It did help me on 112 & 113.

What didn't help me was not eating anything since 7:30 AM.

Anyway, I won the beer splits for the Short course, but I got robbed of the overall title because there was no beer on the end of the table when I finished. I want a rematch! See you next year.

Trail Run (Wakefied CCT North) 2:04:00 [2] 10.0 mi (12:24 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

Out about 9 AM after a good night's sleep. Temps mid-high 60s.

No real plan, though I knew I didn't want to drive as far as PWNF. Picked Wakefield Park parking since it was easy to get to.

Decided to head out on the Cross County Trail and see what that was like. Flat as a pancake and more paved then I thought it would be.

Felt like a slug, and was walking a lot, and then just jogging along, so I tried to speed it up in parts on the way out.

On the way back, I ran .5 mile and walked .3 mile, until I finally was back to the car.

Running/Walking warm up/down (Treadmill) 14:00 [1] 1.0 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: Aqua Velvet

Raining pretty hard outside (well, not that hard, but I am a wuss), so off to the cellar to face the treadmill.

Warm up at increasing speeds of 3-5 mph.

Running (Treadmill) 32:42 [2] 3.0 mi (10:54 / mi)
shoes: Aqua Velvet

No real plan when I started the workout, but then I figured I could settle into 5.5 mph and do four miles. However, my hammie started getting stiff at about 2.5 miles, so I cut it short. Three miles was enough, especially since the battery in my shuffle quit after the first 20 minutes, so no distraction. Counting to 10 over and over just didn't cut it.

Walking warm up/down (Treadmill) 15:00 [1] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Aqua Velvet

Walked a mile to cool down. Sharp right knee pain again when I stepped off of the treadmill.

Note
weight:186lbs

On Monday, I signed up for the Annapolis 10 Miler (end of August - 10 miles paved, and a bit hilly in parts). So, I need to go in to summer training mode if I want to do it seriously - seriously meaning beating my kid. :) Well, that race and Scotland, of course. I don't want to embarrass myself there either.

A couple of APers have commented on a job issue recently. When I read their entries, I wondered what could happen at my job which could make me really unhappy. I, naively, thought that there was nothing they could "do" to me. Yesterday, I found out I was wrong. I was "asked" to take on the time and attendance for the division. Ugh! We have grown to 50 people from the original 10 or less who were part of the division when I started my job 19 years ago. The new duties are not in any way related to my job duties but impossible to say no to. I did ask for, and receive, a six month trial period.

Misc (THE DVD) 30:00 [2]

Riding to work today was sabotaged by a report that the roads were wet, and being such a biking weenie (though not a beenie weenie), I don't like wet roads. In fact, the roads were mostly dry when I walked out the door, but it was too late to change plans since I had a meeting this morning.

I considered driving home at lunchtime and riding back to work, but that didn't really appeal at that point, and well, it just seemed silly. So, the penalty for not biking to work today was having to do The DVD. Though, only 3/4 of it, because I had to finish dinner and make some brownies. The brownies? An attempt to curtail the downward spiral my weight has taken since the weekend.

Biking (Commute In) 14:00 [1] 2.4 mi (5:50 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:190lbs shoes: Bike Sandals

WooHoo! I rode to work, and I was only 15 minutes late. :p Well, so, not quite perfectly planned, but a start. Though the long King Street light was in my favor, I was stopped for about 5 minutes at other lights, one of which I was unable to trip despite my massive weight. Ugh!

Biking (Lunch & home) 22:00 [1] 4.0 mi (5:30 / mi)
shoes: Bike Sandals

Running/Walking 52:00 [2] 4.0 mi (13:00 / mi)
shoes: Aqua Velvet

Behind work, on paved bike trail. "Ran" one mile down, and walked it back x 2. Baby steps. Miles were 1039 1531 1016 1524.

Close to 90, and though most of the mile is in the shade, I was feeling it.

Note

Finished the bout of exercise off with a bunch of weeding after work.
Bike, run, walk, bike, weed. What could be better?! ;)

Biking 34:30 [1] 6.1 mi (5:39 / mi)
shoes: Bike Sandals

Trying to start the month off right by riding to work, but that didn't happen. So, I went out after work for a quick ride before company arrived and checked out the new part of the trail which connects Shirlington to Glebe Road under 395. Very nice!

Also trying out the sandals I bought several months back. I like them - the air in my toes. I needed to adjust the left clip since I couldn't disengage easily, but otherwise they work nicely.

Note: the new part of the trail is nice, however, the at grade crossing in Shirlington in front of the Weenie Beenie is going to be an issue. The traffic there has increased probably 100-200% in the last year or so. It is an accident waiting to happen.
