Orienteering race (Fair Hill 6 hr Rogaine) 5:53:00 [3] *** 30.7 km (11:30 / km)
shoes: Icebugs Sky Blue
Thought about this event the other night, and I figured that I would aim for doing 5 KM/HR pace - not straight line, but the distance I covered. Fair Hill has lots of fields and lots of trails, and the main issue is keeping things straight. Lots of fields and lots of trails are a bit of a weak point for me. I was also aiming to win the Solo Female division.
I executed things well, except for here and there (#80 about 12 minutes lost, and from #71 I spent lots of time wading in the water because it felt so good). My biggest issue turned out to be the fact that I hadn't really made a plan, and I didn't have a route drawn on my map. So, I spent a bit of time trying to figure out what controls I had been to. In the end, I managed to get what I intended without visiting any of them twice, but this was a big time waster. At minimum, I should have carried my cute little mini-Sharpie so that I could have put an X or something on the clue sheet.
Anyway, it got warm quickly, but I managed my liquids well. I felt that the camelbak would be too warm on my back, and I wanted to wear a skimpy tank top, and I didn't want the straps to irritate my shoulders. So, I carried a two 20 oz bottle waist pack. The goodie department is big enough to hold two (or three) additional 20 oz bottles, so I packed a frozen water and a frozen Gatorade in there. This served two purposes - I was comfortable with the amount of liquid I had on me, and the frozen drinks were cool on my lower back. Once I tightened the belt enough to minimize the jiggling, I didn't notice the weight.
I had a GU at 1 hour, my half of PB sandwich at 2 hours, a GU at 3 hours, and I think a GU around 4.5 hours. That part is a blur. I drank about 50 oz the first 3 hours, and 50 oz the last 2:50.
5 KM times in minutes were: 47 56 60 60 65 58
Physical issues: Taped my left ankle, and it held up except when I jammed it. I had aggravated it some more when I fell off the bike two weeks ago. Today, added lots of scratches, and a nice bruise on my upper arm. I fell down hard twice, and the second time, I banged my knee which already had the bike scabs and ripped my pants :(. Biggest problem was metatarsal pain in the right foot which was severe for about the last 5 hours. I massaged it at 3 hours (water stop), and that helped slightly, but basically, it felt like someone was shoving a rock into the ball of my foot with ever foot strike, and actually stepping on a rock resulted in excruciating pain.
So, if you are still here this far (length a la Bash, though not as entertaining), I got 35/53 controls, and I was 1st female, and 15/68 [edit: 57 teams] overall. Very, very pleased.
Thank you, Sandy for the great event organization, and for all the work with the controls, maps, etc. And, thank you for having hot dogs! :)
