Running/Walking 30:00 [1] 2.1 mi (14:17 / mi)
weight:195lbs

It is going to be a busy day with a lunch date with Sarah et al, then Lailah for the afternoon., so I squeezed this in while I could.

2 mintues at 3 mph,18 at 4.5 and 10 at 4. Left back of knee didn't like the walking. Right heel remains sore after, not during.

O Training (Patuxent River Park) 1:15:00 [2] 4.27 mi (17:34 / mi) +61m 16:49 / mi
weight:194lbs

Putting out controls for some training on New Year's Day. Figured it would take me about two hours at a mostly walking pace. Was finished quicker than that, including starting my watch from the parking and a detour to the observation tour, so I figured something was wrong with the jpg map scale, and it was. My 6K course is only 4K.

Beautiful day in the woods, though very windy in the open.

Biking 33:21 [1] 5.76 mi (5:47 / mi) +84m 5:32 / mi
weight:194lbs

So windy on the outbound - 20-25 mph winds. But, with the sun out, and knowing I was going to be on my feet for other activities this weekend, I wanted to ride today. MTB again, which was good for grip when the winds came from the side. So hard to get up the hill to the house, like I was crawling, but I made it! Then a couple of "victory" laps at the end into the wind some more, but knowing I was almost done made it easier. No inhaler today, on purpose, to work on deep breathing. All was good.

Biking 30:48 [1] 6.34 mi (4:51 / mi) +47m 4:45 / mi

Before the ride, Sarah, Matt, and Lailah visited today, which was perfect timing...first, they helped to unload the van, and then Lailah and I started dusting and organizing the dollhouses.

Wanted a updated Lailah and Grammy photo. However, I had to tickle Lailah out of her posed smile first. It mostly worked. :)

Biking 31:04 [1] 5.57 mi (5:35 / mi) +84m 5:20 / mi

About 52 (15 degrees cooler than yesterday). Shorts and two light weight long sleeve shirts. Perfect.

Mountain bike - 29er but heavier. Needed air in the tires. Was short in time, not getting out unti close to 4, but I am glad I took the time since I like how sturdy this bike is. Lots of rough pavement to traverse on this route.

Biking 32:01 [1] 6.54 mi (4:54 / mi) +56m 4:46 / mi
weight:194lbs

A guy passed me coming back and inquired if I was cold. Nope. He was overdressed in my opinion.

On the way out, I was sure I wasn't even going to try the hill to the house, but about halfway back I thought I would give it a try. And at the bottom, I was told myself - you got this! Which I did, except I almost ate it when chain jammed going from mcr to scr. I didn't panic and unclipped casual like and fixed it.

So happy to get this in after spending the earlier part of the day in Baltimore clearing out my mother's/sister's house getting it ready for resale. This should be my last trip to my childhood home. Now what to do with the equivalence of three van loads of dollhouses and all the trimmings. I guess my sister got the last laugh. Sigh.

Running 40:42 [2] 3.62 mi (11:15 / mi) +12m 11:08 / mi

Came home a day early, suffering through lots of traffic on 95. What a beautiful day wasted in the car! In the mid 60s. Rather have cycled but running had to suffice. Lungs are getting stronger!

Walking 20:33 [1] 1.31 mi (15:41 / mi) +46m 14:08 / mi

Walk home when I had enough of the whole running thing. Strong up the hill.

Running/Walking 1:01:00 intensity: (31:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) 4.85 mi (12:35 / mi) +48m 12:12 / mi

5 run 5 walk x 6 plus walk back to car. On the Wiss sans Sandy. Was lovely but company would have been even better.

Swimming 29:40 [1] 0.85 mi (34:54 / mi)
weight:190lbs

Christmas break started today. Besides lunch and a long nap, the rest of the day was spent trying to tidy up. Partly successful, and day flew by.

Got to pool at evening opening time and had a lane to myself, as did each of the rest of the handful of swimmers.

No plan, but it turned into 3x500 yards with one minute rest - 1005, 940, 955

After that I did a couple of minutes of vertical flutter kicks and finished off with two dives off the diving board.

It was a good day.

1 PM

Biking 4:36 [1] 0.61 mi (7:32 / mi) +2m 7:28 / mi

Central office to drop off some outgoing mail.

Biking 1:33:42 [1] 17.08 mi (5:29 / mi) +88m 5:24 / mi

Back to my office the long way. Temps near 60 with winds up to 22 mph. Luckily, the ride was into the wind on the outbound, making the return trip much more fun, especially when tired.

Back of right heel is still painful to the touch, but both knees better today. Even was able to peddle standing up, which was required on the little steep hills into the wind.

Wednesday Dec 21, 2016 #

2 PM

Biking 1:12:00 [1] 13.45 mi (5:21 / mi) +35m 5:19 / mi
weight:191lbs

Temp = 45, feels like 39. Two long and 1 short - a little too warm, but not unbearably so. Legs felt heavy and left knee a little unhappy, but otherwise a nice way to pass the time.

Had Roger wake me this morning before he left for work, so I made it to work at an earlier hour. One more day and then off until the new year.

Tuesday Dec 20, 2016 #

Swimming 30:00 [1] 0.85 mi (35:18 / mi)
weight:190lbs

Overslept this morning, though unlike the usual pattern of not having slept much, and then falling asleep when it is time to get up, last night, I actually got a goodly amount of sleep.

Pool was a good choice. Back and forth, thinking about a better flutter kick, coupled with not sinking, is a good way to block out the lingering and overlapping estate issues.

The smell of chlorine says I got a workout in today. I like that smell.

Monday Dec 19, 2016 #

4 PM

Biking 45:00 [3] 6.93 mi (6:30 / mi) +96m 6:14 / mi
weight:191lbs

After work. The Battle of the Ashes has reached my door, and rather than eating cookies, I threw the front and back lights on the bike, and out the door I went. I hoped a ride would also help to work off the desire to say things that wouldn't make me feel any better, and also would not make a difference. Not sure it worked, but there is always caller ID.

Freezing body parts is a good distraction. Thumbs bad, but then they warmed up at about the same time that the toes got cold. Three long sleeve, and need to use the better hat that covers my ears.

Right knee hurts from yesterday, when I got out of the seat. So, I ended up walking up the hill to the house instead of trying to ride it.

Orienteering race (Brown) 1:12:19 [3] *** 4.0 km (18:05 / km) +190m 14:37 / km
weight:192lbs

FR = 3.42 miles and 121.7 m climb

Aim was for an hour, but I bled a bunch on the long leg to 6. So close to a perfect race otherwise. Still struggling a bit with the new compass, but, ah, well, there is always next time.

Strong wind came through around 40 minutes in, and then the temperature dropped about 10 degrees. Refreshing, since I had started out in a balmy 65 degrees.

Fell twice - first time slamming on my back when my feet flew out from under me, and the second tweaking my right knee.

Running/Walking (Treadmill) 40:00 [1] 3.03 mi (13:12 / mi)
weight:189lbs

Started at 3 mph and walked for 2 minutes, adding 3/10 every 2 minutes. Up to 6 mph and the back down, running from 4.2 to 6 and back

Right heel is sore. Still.

Thursday Dec 15, 2016 #

Swimming 41:00 [1] 1.14 mi (35:57 / mi)
slept:3.0 weight:189lbs

With the temps at 26 - feels like 13, it seemed like just going to the pool required some HTFUness - but I made it! It helps knowing that the pool is kept at a comfortable temperature, and just the first few seconds feel cold. Swam straight through except for about 2 x 10 seconds to clear my throat.

Slept poorly last night and was late to work. Ugh! I hope swimming will help me sleep tonight. I am working on a bit less caffeine during the day, and sweets are next (less, not all).

Wednesday Dec 14, 2016 #

Biking 1:00:00 [1] 11.0 mi (5:27 / mi)
weight:189lbs

Squeezed in one more biking day since conditions were about the same as yesterday, maybe 2 degrees cooler. Wore light vest over 2 LS shirts and buff covering ears. My thighs felt super heavy, likely objecting to me subjecting them to this three days in a row.

P.S. Tootsies were getting chilled by the end.

Tuesday Dec 13, 2016 #

3 PM

Biking 1:02:00 [1] 11.5 mi (5:23 / mi) +11m 5:22 / mi
weight:191lbs

Overcast and 45, feels like 42, less windy than yesterday, but still more wind than I like. It got a bit rawer near the end - it is supposed to rain tonight. Last mostly decent day for at least a week, so I saved the pool and treadmill for other days this week.

Wore two long sleeve shirts today. A little sweaty at the end, but comfortable in general.

My goal is to reach 250 hours of training for the year, which is more than I have done since 2002, when I started logging on AP, except for the boot camp year. So, I saw that I had 243, and I was a little bummed because I felt it would be hard to get 17 more hours in this month. Later on, the difference became clear, and I was excited again.

Monday Dec 12, 2016 #

2 PM

Biking 55:00 [1] 10.11 mi (5:26 / mi) +28m 5:24 / mi
weight:193lbs

After a gloomy morning, I went out for a ride in a sunny 53, feels like 49 with the 10-12 mph wind. Long sleeve, long pants, vest, and I was comfy enough.

My right heel is painful, not PF pain, but likely bursitis. Not new pain, but more painful that I need to think about fixing it, or not. :)

Sunday Dec 11, 2016 #

10 AM

Trail Run 20:00 [1] 1.1 mi (18:11 / mi)
weight:195lbs

Putting out five white controls with 2 Loudoun Co NJROTC students.

Orienteering race (Brown) 52:46 [3] *** 3.8 km (13:53 / km) +170m 11:21 / km

FR = 2.81 miles with 82 m climb

7 AM

Mowing/Yard 30:00 [1]
weight:194lbs

Pushing the heavy lawn vac around and emptying the bag. Lots of upper body. Our yard for the final time this season, as well as the neighbors, and 1/3 of another neighbor.

Note

Spent the afternoon with Lailah after picking her up at noon from school.

Wednesday Dec 7, 2016 #

Swimming 30:00 [1]
weight:190lbs

Barely functioning Monday or Tuesday, so even though I wanted to do something, I really didn't have it in me. No worries though. Finally some solid sleep, and now that I have signed up for Georgia, I will make it a priority to stay focused on training of some sort.

Sunday Dec 4, 2016 #

8 AM

O Training 47:22 [1] 1.72 mi (27:32 / mi) +60m 24:52 / mi

Put out 9 controls at QOC event. Had to go back out later and reverse 133 and 138, which Alli, an early starter on Yellow, was able to relay back via Boris, Greg, Kathleen, to me, that they were reversed. Oops.

Blame it on about 2 hours of sleep each of the last two nights, and of the worse kind, in 10 minute chunks.
11 AM

Orienteering race (QOC - Yellow) 40:56 [2] *** 2.24 mi (18:16 / mi) +120m 15:40 / mi

After putting out controls, and then correcting the reversed controls, my right heel was really painful, and I thought I would just hang out for the day instead of going out. However, the Best Ever Results Team (minus Tori) appeared up over the horizon, despite my neglecting to say, yes, please to them, and arrange for shifts.

Amy and I set up, Hannah and Kevin took first shift, following by Alli and Barney, and me, with Amy doing the last bits, as usual. Since Alli was handling the duties so well without me, I got the best job of the day - sitting with Barney and keeping warm.

When I needed to fix something on the results display, Barney was lovingly passed around among the West Point cadets and the Naval Academy midshipmen, all in need of some Barney time. Still smiling about the scene three days later. Sure am glad Barney wasn't able to go to the board retreat this weekend!

Oh, yes, I did the Yellow course. That was all I had in me, after another two hours of broken sleep. It was the correct choice, especially after the slog from 8-9 Route - that was just plain mean. :)

Another good day.

Orienteering race (NJTORC - Brown) 1:27:12 [3] *** 4.05 mi (21:32 / mi) +210m 18:33 / mi

Only about two hours of sleep last night, spread over about seven hours - ugh! Had hoped for more rest, because today was the Area 5 NJROTC Championships, which is always exhausting. However, while it was exhausting, it was also very satisfying. And, I even got to run a course this year while Amy manned the download area. Windy and cold, but beautiful in the woods. Three errors, a couple of which I wish I could blame on the new compass, which I am not really bonding with because of the wiggling needle. However, I think it was all on me today. Regardless, I enjoyed the course, and it wasn't too chaotic while I was gone, or at least not anything that wasn't handled in my absence. :)

Thank you, Amy! As well as all of the cadets and parents from Governor Thomas Johnson High School NJROTC, who not only was the host school, they also won the Overall Team Trophy.

Route

A couple of setup errors to remember not to do again - wrong date in OE2010, so results display software was not happy.
Wrong external video driver on the results display computer. Had switched it over to the QOC monitor drivers after NAOC thinking I was done using the TVs for many months. This resulted in about an hour of angst before Richard Sanchez from Patuxent stepped in and calmly sorted the issue out. Thank you, Richard!

Misc 15:00 [1]
weight:190lbs

I wanted to bike today, but with 20 mph wind gusts, that wasn't happening. Lots to do to get set up for NJROTC Area 5 Championships tomorrow, and the QOC event on Sunday, and was really pressed for time as well. So, perhaps a bit of a stretch, but I am counting some of the loading the van as my exercise for today. And, considering how heavy I was breathing, I knew I was working hard. Anyone who has helped me load or unload the van at an event would ageee. Right? ;-)
