Misc (Kayaking) 47:50 [1] 1.85 mi (25:52 / mi) +1m 25:48 / mi

Met Amy at Occoquan Regional Park for a little AR 101, starting with getting in and out of a kayak, and then some turtle and bird watching. Osprey, geese, ducks, buzzard looking things. Very satisfying.

Orienteering 35:07 [1] 1.88 mi (18:41 / mi) +64m 16:53 / mi

Next was a little orienteering, all on trails. Totally dripping after.

Biking 16:51 [1] 2.69 mi (6:16 / mi) +66m 5:49 / mi

Finished the "race" off with a ride out to the park entrance and back. Had never noticed that the outbound was uphill. Just went steady, and the return trip was fun!

I signed up to do an adventure race next weekend. Thanks, I think, to peggyd for posting about the event. It includes paddling, orienteering, and cycling. I am not the most stable person on a bike, even on well paved roads. I feel like I don't have any natural lean, so I am always adjusting. So, when asked if I did adventure races, I always told people that I am a weenie, and that I would have to push my bike up the hills, push it down the hills, and maybe ride a little bit in between. Hmmm, better test my MTB abilities...so, after race timing this morning, I took my bike for a spin, of sorts...walked the ups, walked the downs, and rode maybe 50% of the rest of the single track. Just as I suspected. Did it once in each direction. Maybe got slightly better the second time. Regardless, I am fine with my lack of ability, but I am crossing my fingers that the cycling next Sunday will be low on adventure.

Swimming 22:00 [1]

A short desweating swim after work. As kissy said recently, nice to be able to pop in and be up for knocking a few laps out (my interpretation of what she said). Wanted to go a little longer, but I was tired, so I was content with what I did.

I have now exceeded the number of times that I think is needed to make the yearly pool pass a good value, but this year I don't plan to backslide and blow off the next 5 months left in the year.

The other day when I was riding through the Oakridge Campground loop, there were about 6-8 little kids in the furthest loop riding their bikes. The youngest one was on a tricycle, and as I passed and said hi to everyone, she said, I can ride my bike really fast. I said, so can I! It put a big smile on my face for the rest of the ride.

Biking 1:03:11 [1] 11.7 mi (5:24 / mi) +144m 5:12 / mi

Plan was to ride some of the fire roads at Prince William to get accustomed to the gravel parts, which I am not too keen on. Ended up riding more paved than gravel, but I think I got a little more comfortable riding on the fire roads.

No snakes or turtles, but I did see a cute little fawn on the drive into the park.

Biking 23:25 [1] 3.85 mi (6:05 / mi) +33m 5:55 / mi

I didn't have to walk the little hill on the gravel road this time, so win for me.

Swimming 32:00 [1]
weight:182lbs

Swim after waiting for AC guy at house (routine). Coincidentally, my office AC was also being serviced today. Coolness all the way around. Yay!

Walking 25:00 [1] 1.67 mi (14:58 / mi)
weight:182lbs

On the treadmill - 5 minute walking interspersed with 4x1 mile. Made not so bad by watching tv on the ipad.

Running 43:36 [2] 4.0 mi (10:54 / mi)

Set the speed at 5.5 mph and did a mile. First one made my lungs aches, 3rd one had cranky knees, but none were too bad, in the grand scheme of things.

Biking 35:00 [1] 7.32 mi (4:47 / mi) +5m 4:46 / mi
weight:184lbs

Over to the central office to drop something off and then a lunch time ride. Through Crystal City to get to the bike trail. Not really much fun with all the buses and pedestrians. Stopped at a bench near the school system's rowing facility on the Potomac and ate my sandwich and chilled for a few minutes.

The new tires feel nice to ride on. Though not on this path since no bikes allowed. Waiting for the day that there is a bike trail bypass of Alexandria City.

Biking 43:00 [1] 9.15 mi (4:42 / mi) +29m 4:39 / mi

Back to the office after first adding a section on towards the house to make for a longer outing.

Swimming 30:00 [1]

Sweating buckets moving boxes around at work, so the pool was the best choice for today. Swam 30 minutes straight. No music since I had left it on the last time I used it. Only the sounds in my head to keep me company, which was somewhat suspect.

Another try at a tri...

Total time 1:05:35
Overall place 81/103
Gender place 27/42
F55-59 2/3 (winner at 60, and 3rd at 1:13)
Swim 10:04 - 62nd (9:43 in water, and :21 to the timing mat)
Bike 32:56 - 78th (includes about 2 minutes transition time)
Run 22:36 - 81st (transition time was ~2:25)

Swimming race 10:04 [2] 0.25 mi (40:18 / mi)
weight:180lbs

This was another race put on by the same company, at the same location and the same distances as the race in May.

When I went to the table to pick up my timing chip, there was Amy checking in as a volunteer. She had driven 90 minutes to take a volunteer stint, and lucky for her, she got assigned the only shady corner of the run course, and even got to see a bunch of deer while she waited for the runners to start coming through.

Again, the race started late, though this time I was prepared for that to be the case. Race brief was 7:15, and advertised race start was 7:30, but the first person didn't go into the pool until 7:40. At both races, I have observed that the race director seems to be trying to do everything herself and is a bit crazed.

I put 20 minutes as my swim time in order to be at the back of the start line. This was both good and bad... For the first four laps, I was able to easily pass the people who started just ahead of me, and there wasn't much congestion at the end to duck under the lane line.

Then the fun began when I encountered the actual slow people, swimming side stroke two wide and not getting over for people to pass. I tried touching one guy's leg, but he didn't budge, so I took a deep breath and dove under him. Or, at least that is what I think I did. :) At the end of the lane, there would be 3-5 people hanging on waiting to duck under. I got a little aggressive at the last bottleneck, sort of elbowing my way through, and then it was open water for the last four lengths.

Swim time approximately the same as May, and it felt less stressful. Though, I didn't really enjoy swimming over people. So, the swim seeding still needs a little work, with something between the 8 minute seed in May and the 20 minutes for this race.

8 AM

Biking race 32:56 [2] 8.0 mi (4:07 / mi)

Unlike May, when I used my mountain bike, today I used my trek which is closer to a road bike. Roger mentioned a couple of days ago that maybe there was something wrong with my bike tires. After glancing at the front tire while riding home, because that is the one I can see, I told him that the tires looked fine.

Since there was a bike shop on site, I went over there and asked the mechanic for his opinion. He said that the front tire had some life in it, and then we looked at the back tire. Oops, even I could tell that the tire was totally bald, and the missing black parts wasn't a good sign either. Oh, well, nothing to be done about it now. Should have paid attention to Roger.

Back to the race - out of the pool and into the transition area. Took my suit off, leaving swim shorts and running bra, and put a shirt on. Helmet, shoes, gloves and off. I think about two minutes in transition.

Felt good to be wet and on the bike, catching some coolness. Twice around the bike course, which is a fun course with the multiple out and back sections so you can see other people. Rode carefully with the bald tire issue on my mind, making sure I didn't hit any potholes. Also slowed a ton around the nine U turns. Got egged on to keep up with a younger woman, and I was able to, and then I passed her on the last little uphill. Fun.

Though I put 8 miles, since this is the advertised distance, the bike is more like 7.4 miles.

Running race 22:36 [2] 2.0 mi (11:18 / mi)

Took about 2:20 to put my socks and shoes on, have a Gu and head out for the run. Had to stop and tightened my shoes, even through I thought they were tight enough.

The run course sucks since it is all on sunny pavement, as in sidewalk, not even asphalt. Concentrated on something to run to, and then I allowed myself a walk break. Only shady, unpaved part was Amy's corner behind the building, and that didn't last for long.

I knew that the leader in my age group was well ahead of me, but I when I saw the third woman in my age group walking ahead of me, I started running again, and patted her on the butt as I went by and said good job. OK, just kidding about the butt pat. Passed a couple of other people as I tried to finish strong.

Mile was 10:48, and .88 was 9:21. Perhaps I am missing a little distance after we get off of the bike and before we exit for the run, which makes the course 2 miles?

As I mentioned was the possibility in May, I was able to pare about 8 minutes off of my time just in the transitions. Since I didn't exactly taper for the event, and the training was all sort of last minute, I wasn't disappointed in the overall time. And, who knows, maybe with some better tires, I could have been a little faster on the bike. [Tires replaced later in the day at the local shop, while I waited.]

Overall, I enjoyed the race, and I was happy with the effort, and I really appreciated Amy showing up to volunteer.
9 AM

Note

But, then I decided to stay for the awards ceremony...bad idea.

OK, they have to wait for everyone to finish in order to do the awards. I get that. And mistakes happen, like using the real age vs. the results age, and having to recalculate everything. I get that too. So, we waited and waited under the hot tent, doing some spot drawings to keep the people from leaving.

Then the RD finally started, and as she did in the brief, she only used her voice, which isn't a very big voice at all. Luckily, I was sitting nearby so that I could hear.

Started with the youngest to the oldest, and I was the oldest woman there. OK, I can live with being called near the end.

However, the whole clapping for each person thing as they are called up, was tedious. And, having the photographer take the pictures with other people in the background is poor planning. Poor 407 has extra parts coming out of her...and the other pictures are worse.

And, the fake/limp handshake from the winner in my age group...ugh! OK, now I am just being picky. :)

But, I wanted this medal, because it is unique - ringed with a bike chain. I will have to post a picture.

Recap time - I enjoyed the race more this time around, and signing up accomplished what I wanted it to, which was getting me off my butt and out the door, even for just a couple of sessions.

Was it worth almost $100? Probably not, and while I am not totally sold on the Tri culture, I will likely do the one next May, if it fits into the schedule.

Orienteering race (Patuxent River Park) 1:20:37 [1] *** 6.3 km (12:48 / km) +87m 11:58 / km

Garmin = 4.78 miles

This was the Snakeless Summer Series event put on by Amy. All of the streamers were on the trail and/or creek junctions, with just a couple slightly off trail. Amy does not like snakes, and she makes no secret of it either. You would know if you heard her come across one while in the woods.

So, this event allowed you to stay all on trails, if you were so inclined, in order to avoid being surprised by any snakes. There were a few short cuts you could take, and I took most of them, though I should have worn something besides shorts...got a little scratched up.

Ran when I could, including most of the trail dead straight trail leg from 4-5. My time was 6:48 (11:51 mph) for 908 meters.

Only error was to 12, one of the off trail controls in a reentrant, when I zoned and visited a ditch, going sooner off the trail than I should have.

Back to the finish to the cheers of Peggy, who was getting ready to go out.

Chatted briefly, gobbled down some Amy's wonderful triple chip cookies, grabbed some more for the road, and then off to the house to meet Lailah and Matt.

Have only run the this map in the fall, on the stumps...here is what the big field looks like in the summer.

4 PM

Note

Had a nice visit with Lailah. We went to the pool, and then we played a long time with the vintage cabbage patch dolls, taking them to the "pool."

Biking 36:00 [1] 7.04 mi (5:07 / mi) +32m 5:03 / mi
weight:180lbs

Ride to work. Three days in a row - at about 7, 8, and 7:30. First day seemed like more cyclists, and the second day had a ton of cars on Potomac Avenue, avoiding Route 1. Today seemed like of an average of the first two days.

One less snake in the neighborhood...I am not the one who ran over it. I just stopped to take a picture to send to Amy to gross her out. It worked...

9 AM

Walking 25:51 [1] 2.18 mi (11:52 / mi) +18m 11:33 / mi

Walked 1/2 mile to the metro (not included) and then took the train to Springfield-Franconia station. From there, I walked and ran to the car dealer to pick up the O'Mobile#2.
12 PM

Swimming 20:00 [1] 0.62 mi (32:15 / mi)

Needed a shower, so I stopped by the pool to shower, swim, shower. Swam first 10 minutes with no tunes to remind me what that sounds like. Wore a new suit that I bought in January, maybe. Was a little too snug then, but it fits nicely now, or at least there seems to be less flabby stuff sticking out the back. Think I will wear my usual men's swim shorts, running bra, and this swim suit, and then take off the swim suit and put a shirt on to bike and run. I should be able to handle no padding for 8 miles on the bike.

Biking (to work) 30:00 [1] 6.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Up and into work by 7:30. WooHoo! Lots of cyclists, likely because of the metro shut down in the area. Can't really compare since I have ridden to work at this time in ages and ages, but I think it is at least double or triple.

Since I was already sweating, I moved boxes from the upstairs office to the basement. Almost crashed the hand truck going down the lopsided ramp into the basement, but I completed the mission unscathed.
4 PM

Swimming race 30:00 [1]

Good swim. Pushed hard, especially trying to keep pace with Marjoni (sp?), a younger woman swimming 50s in the next lane. Chatted with her and exchanged names after I was done. She admired my stamina. Yay! Her 50s is because she is just starting swimming up after last time being when she was a kid. I encouraged her not to be discouraged.

Biking (To work) 30:00 [1] 5.5 mi (5:27 / mi)

Dropped car off at dealer - AC coldness is suspect and passenger sliding door does not open electronically...

Roger met me, and I took him home and then rode my bike back to work.

Overcast, windy, but pleasant enough.
4 PM

Biking (Back home) 30:00 [1] 6.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Dear Haymarket Trans Inc.,
I would like to lodge a complaint. At approximately 4 pm, on Potomac Ave, just past the Regal Cinemas Potomac Yard 16, one of your bus drivers came dangerously close to me as I was riding my bike. I was clearly in the right hand of the two lanes going north, and while he moved over a bit to pass me, he was well within the same lane I was. I was not on the shoulder, and I was clearly claiming the right hand lane. I was dressed in a bright pink shirt, and wild colored shorts, so I was not invisible.
The bus pulled up behind a string of other Haymarket Trans Inc. buses shortly after, all blocking the lane of traffic, by the way. I stopped and rapped on the window, but the driver claimed to not be able to open the window to speak to me.
Please remind your drivers that the law is 3 feet, and really, since the left lane was clear, he should have changed lanes completely and not risked my life.
Thank you.

Otherwise, it was a pleasant ride home.

Swimming 20:00 [1]

Then I went to the pool to swim in my bike shorts and bra - not acceptable since the bike shorts do not have a drawstring. Need to figure out something for Sunday.

If I am going to have to suffer 89 degree temps, then I may as well do it while riding my bike vs. trying to work in my sweltering office. Had to stop for a GU about 10 minutes in because I was feeling a little shaky. Was fine after that, though I had some beans at the turn around also. Almost bit it getting off the bike to go down the steps at Potomac Yard connection. Instead of panicking, I was able to get the other foot unclipped just as I was tipping over to that side. Whew.

Biking 43:59 [1] 10.0 mi (4:24 / mi) +12m 4:23 / mi

Though I was worried that I had been too ambitious, the return trip was no problem, and so much fun. Got a walk signal at all of the lights, so no mo was lost. Whee!

Note

My office is in a new location in the building, but my annual AC issues remains...as in, it was 85 in my office at 8 am, and there is no hope of a resolution anytime soon because of the work being done in the school over the summer. Can sit in front of a fan and it is bearable, but my job requires moving boxes around, and as soon as I lift a box, I overheat. Ugh!
11 AM

Biking 1:00:00 [1] 12.05 mi (4:59 / mi) +145m 4:48 / mi

Wanted to swim after the bike, and knowing it is nearly impossible to put a suit on when sweaty, I wore my bathing suit, which consists of men's speedo short tights and a swim suit. Put a shirt over that. Worked well, except the swim suit was uncomfortable in the one area.

Out and back from home to east falls church. Good to be on the bike again. Maybe my grump slump is over.
