Misc (The DVD) 40:00 [2]
weight:183lbs

On leave today...just because. Lazy day, but I was motivated to do the core workout, and I did.

Calves are really sore from the hills on Saturday and the looser snow conditions yesterday, especially the muddier course in the afternoon. It was hard to keep upright at times going downhill, and I wished I had something to slide down the power line clearing on. That would have been fun!

Tomorrow - an hour walk/hike.

O Training (Happyland Yellow) 40:09 [3] *** 3.0 km (13:23 / km) +90m 11:38 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Thanks to Sandy, I was able to get out on the Yellow course earlier, rather then later.
2 PM

O Training (Happyland White) 19:21 [3] 2.3 km (8:25 / km) +65m 7:22 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Really surprised that I went out again 3 hours later, but things were going well, and people kept asking me if they could help. So, I geared up again to run around the White course, which was the opposite direction of the Yellow course, otherwise I would have passed.

Left the watch behind and had the goal to beat the first official White finisher in 23:57, and under 10 min per k would be nice too. No errors, and only flagging a bit on the last two uphills.

It was an excellent day!

Trail Run 10:00 [2] 0.75 mi (13:20 / mi)

O Training (PWNF) 3:00:00 [2] 6.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
weight:183lbs shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Sandy led us around most of tomorrow's QOC blue course at Prince William National Forest. About 1-2 inches of snow, but easy to walk on. Conditions were great, and I was loving the calorie burning activity.

Of course, I totally blew any gain on dinner, wine, and jujyfruits (whole box!!). But, it was a good day, so I can live with that.

Week 3: 183 (-1 -7)

Trail Run (W&OD under icey snow) 30:00 [2] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)
weight:184lbs shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Planned to run at school today, but I was enjoying a quiet office (schools closed), and I didn't get around to it.

Uncharacteristically, I managed to get up and out the door after the after work rest period with Roger. I made sure I didn't fall asleep tonight like last night, which only helped to contribute to yesterday's major excesses.

Put on the ice bugs and ran down to the bike trail figuring it would be packed snow, and it was. An excellent workout, and I really felt like I was pushing myself hard, but not struggling with breathing. Very pleased.

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.75 mi (20:00 / mi)

Walked back up the hill to the house, and also added the walk to the subway for lunch today.

Oh, well, I blew today, but that is OK, since I was a superstar yesterday!

Yesterday: Ran an hour, ate no sweets, drank no wine, Loseit says I was -1K calories. Yeah!
Today: No exercise, lots of snickerdoodles, bottle of wine, don't even want to try to put the calories into loseit. Sigh!

Tomorrow is another day.

Running (Treadmill) 1:00:00 [2] 5.2 mi (11:32 / mi)
weight:182lbs

Plan was to run on the dirt track at work, but I forgot until I got there that I had an eye appointment today.

So, after lying down with Roger after work, the treadmill was the only viable option for today. Too bad since it was in 40s.

Ran 40 minutes, broke to find something for Roger, and then the last 20 minutes. Hips really stiffened by the end.

O Training (Greenbelt Yellow) 21:28 [3] ** 2.6 km (8:15 / km) +37m 7:42 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Got to Greenbelt ~ 9:20 and got set up. Got out around 11 on my first of two easy courses. Dressed in Silva training pants on the bottom, UA tight shirt and QOC jersey on the top. This was fine despite the less then freezing temps. No issues except that the control box wasn't out at one location, but I didn't hesitate too long before moving on. Felt like I was moving better then at Wheaton two weeks ago, so, I was pleased with that.
11 AM

O Training (Greenbelt White) 13:52 [3] ** 1.7 km (8:09 / km) +25m 7:36 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Ran White after Yellow. Planned to run them with no break in between, but a control unit was "missing" from the 9th control on Yellow, so I sorted out getting a replacement out there. The replacement was not necessary after all, and that was kind of the theme of the day. Ken reported a missing control, but when Peggy went out with a new one, it was there. Apparently it had been found and put out again. Peggy had to replace a control flag at another location, but the control box was there. Later, one of the more experienced women on Brown reported a missing control box with the flag on the ground, though others had found that control with no problem. Just a weird day!

Week 3
Starting weight: 184
Current weight: 183 (-1 -7) posted 182 for the last two days, but 183 today
Average mood: giddy new Grammy (+1000), moderate (-2, see giddy...), determined (+100)
Goal for Week 4: ride bike again (might have to be today, if I can get over the thought of the cold. Rest of the week's forecast is worse. I do have a new face mask which seems more comfortable and may fog the glasses up less), core DVD once, no two day breaks, though 2 out of 3 is fine.
Goal for Week 3 to run for 30 minutes not met, but not an issue since I did something for six days straight.

Week 2
Starting weight: 186
Current weight: 184 (-2 -6)
Average mood: sober (-1), anticipatory (+100)
Goal for Week 3: ride bike 1-2 times, do both goals from Week 2

Week 1
Starting weight: 190
Current weight: 186 (-4 -4)
Average mood: sober
Goal for Week 2: no two day breaks, run 30 minutes

Biking 1:04:00 [2] 12.25 mi (5:13 / mi)
shoes: Shimano Bike

26F! Second pair of pants, in addition to everything I wore last week. Put on the face mask thingee, but it needs to be washed first to get the chemical smell out.

So, I wore a buff instead, and this worked fine since I wore it mostly around my neck and not over my face.

Got out later then expected at around 3:35, and the sun was brutal in my eyes coming back, but where it was behind a building, it was getting darkish.

Anyway, a ride in this week. Yeah!

Walking 6:00 [1] 0.3 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Shimano Bike

Exhausted by the time I got to the hill, so I pushed my bike up and home. Weighed 181 after.

Walking (GW Neighborhood) 1:02:00 [1] 4.23 mi (14:39 / mi)
slept:2.0 shoes: Z Hiking Boots

Explored more of the neighborhood around the school. Found a mostly cinder track at a park about 1/2 mile away. The track is 3/10 of a mile. Went by the bakery as well.

Miles were 1436 1424 1452 (crossing more streets) 1437.

This whole exercise thing in the context of giving me extra calories to eat and drink sure has merit. :)

Am experiencing major insomnia. After about an hour of sleep last night, I hope tonight will be better.

Scale said 182 this morning.

Trail Run (Out back of work) 21:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:30 / mi)
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Wow! It was 48 F today. So much for the freeze of the previous 24 hours.

Decided that today I would explore what was behind the school, well, besides the whole train track/fenced deal just over yonder.

Knew it would be muddy, so I brought the ice bugs and ankle supports instead of getting my work shoes (hiking boots) dirty.

The usable track seems to be .5 miles in one direction. A little moist today, but way more enjoyable then the .25 mile paved loop around the football field. It is wide open, so I didn't feel like I was in "danger" at any time, though I stayed alert. The one detour was to explore the top of the hill. Nothing much there, but it was clear, so maybe it would be good for running up and down.

I ran to the end of the unpaved, walked a little of the road (not doing that part again), explored the upper part, ran the .5 mile part back, walked the .5 mile part back the other way and repeated two more times.

The half mile running splits were 511 511 517. Not bad for the gushy conditions, though it was the slightly downhill direction with the slight wind at my back.

Anyway, lots of babbling for a nothing day really. :)
2 PM

Walking 39:00 [1] 2.6 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

The walking part of the workout. Made more interesting by the fact that every time I got to the turnaround, I smelled the most wonderful bread smell. Turns out there is a bakery (Gold Crust) right there, and with the wind in my face, sweet!

A yukky day with ice covered car and sidewalks. Schools are closed so the phones are quiet in my office. May have taken leave and stayed home, but I have a college student wanting to complete some research before going back to school this weekend.

Plan for the week:
Tuesday - the core DVD
Wednesday - 1 hour in hiking boots, explore the area behind the school
Thursday - 30 minute run
Friday - rest day
Saturday - bike, if conditions are favorable, otherwise a trail run
Sunday - Orienteering meet

Misc (The DVD) 40:00 [3]

WooHoo!! All the way through tonight.

Biking (East Falls Church & back) 1:10:00 [2] 12.7 mi (5:31 / mi)
shoes: Shimano Bike

32 F, feels like 28 F. Dressed almost perfectly. With toe warmers, my toes never got cold. Wore an additional layer on top than what I wore the other day (four total), and that was fine as well. Only bad part was my face. Need to find something more comfortable which also has better ventilation so I can cover my nose but not have my glasses fog up. And, of course, my nose ran like crazy the whole time, so carrying tissue would have been a good idea, but blowing into one of my shirts worked as well. :). Butt was a bit sore, but nothing I couldn't overcome.

Out in the harder direction first (slight uphill but with the light wind at my back). There was almost no one out for the first part, which was really relaxing. Then saw more people through Bluemont Park, but not the regular swarm, go figure. Back the way I came (downhill with wind at my back), but like two days ago, I was unable to get up the hill. Next time, perhaps.

Gears in the middle ring were still changing themselves, so I drove to the bike shop after, and the guy adjusted it while I waited. Slow time of year. Perfect. My kind of service.

O Training (Home woods) 32:00 [2] 1.75 mi (18:17 / mi) +55m 16:40 / mi
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Something gentle on the knees and feet was in order if I plan to keep up a steady exercise schedule. The wind was blowing a little too much for another bike ride, which I would have preferred since it felt so good yesterday. So, I went out behind the house and ran around in the nicer part of the little bit of suburban woods. Called it a terrain run in my head, which sounds really productive towards my big goal of better orienteering results in 2011. Even went up and down the hill a couple of times, walking up, but still getting some hills in the bank.

Biking (Hump back) 1:00:00 [2] 12.25 mi (4:54 / mi)
shoes: Shimano Bike

In bed until 9 AM, breakfast, epunch stuff, post office, errands with Roger, lunch, rest, bike ride, shower, dinner.

So happy to get out on the bike. A little chilly at ~ 40F, but the winds of the last week had died down, or so I thought. I made sure the tires had air and the brakes worked, though apparently I need some lessons on the chain/derailleur business. Bike was changing gears by itself. I stopped on the side of the train and was looking, for what that was worth, which is nothing if you don't know what is what. A guy named Jason stopped and offered his assistance, and though he didn't really solve the problem, the offer of help was appreciated. I started again and changed to the big ring which was tougher, but avoided the whole changing/clanging every 15 seconds. On the way back, I changed back to the middle ring and all was well, except for the fact that the wind was brutal!! But, so happy to be out on my bike. It felt so great!

Orienteering race (Wheaton Yellow) 19:57 [3] ** 1.96 km (10:11 / km) +45m 9:08 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Garmin: 1.4 miles 38 m climb

I was so sure I had broken 10 min/k. Bummer (just a little).

Following the trend for 2010-11, there was another fine turnout for the QOC event - 186 starts (10 of these were second courses).

Just wanted to run and not think too hard but think a tiny bit. So, Yellow followed by White (both list as non-competitive in the results since I can't keep winning the Yellow course).

Cold day made a little better by being in the O' Mobile. Though it let me down a little today. When I wanted to start the car for some heat, I discovered the battery was dead. I had left the car in the Run position when I had lowered the back window. Thanks to Barry N for offering cables and Robert H for bringing a portable charger and getting me going again. Issue was perhaps related to another problem discovered that the fuse to put said back window back up was blown. I would have driven home with it that way, or made a ghetto wind block, but Nadim puzzled through checking the fuse and we got it working for now. Thank you Nadim! My core was COLD on the way home, and I can't imagine having driven with the window open.

Finally, a huge thank you to Roger for helping to unload the car.

Orienteering race (Wheaton White) 14:45 [3] ** 1.7 km (8:41 / km) +30m 7:58 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Garmin: 1.15 miles 28 m climb

A really good day all the way around. With Heidi (and David) as the meet director, I knew things would be done well, and they were. I had help on the outside throughout the day, and people were a little more informed when they stepped up to the window to give their information.

And, when I came back from my courses, there wasn't a huge problem waiting for me! Though, I still need to figure out why the printer port keeps going to "unavailable." Unlike the last two meets, today we were able to give everyone splits, albeit a bit backdoor.

Back at my starting point. I am thinking that the weight spiking up to 191 and dropping back down is reflective of a fake period vs. any real weight gain/loss.

I am trying to cut the leftover portions I eat at lunch in half, as well as the wine consumption (not that I drink wine at work). Doing well at work with little boxes of raisins and cranberries and drinking water. Need to get the sweets out of the house since I am cramming those down without much thought.

Walking (GW "track") 31:00 [1] 2.1 mi (14:46 / mi)

From office (.3 miles 5:06) to paved track around football field (6 times in 337 332 330 326 328 326) and back to office (455). Wore what I had on - jeans, hiking boots, knit top. Felt conspicuous since it was near dismissal time and parents in cars were lined up in the pickup line. Shins hurt at first, but then they eased up. A little breezy, but really a beautiful crisp day at ~40 F. Glad I did something!

O Training (PWNF) 1:40:07 [2] 5.2 mi (19:15 / mi)
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Sandy designed two Sprint (short) courses using the two cabin camps, and I went and tried them out and checked the control locations. This is for the QOC event at the end of the month, and they will be available on Saturday afternoon into the early evening. So, the options will be day and/or night.

Parked at lot G and went down Mawavi Road to the cabin camping. Ran the first .45 miles downhill in about 10:30 pace. My lungs were screaming. Walked the uphill and then mostly walked the longer course 2 picking up at control 8 and finishing at the dining hall (1:03:46 for 3.04 miles). I forgot I was supposed to do 1-7 after the finish, but that is ok since most of those controls were on course 1 as well. Then I took off my fanny pack and tried to go harder around course 1 (15:43 for 1.33 km). I walked and ran back to the car (20:38 for 1.21 miles).

Glad to get out.
