Note

Passed out early last night only to wake up at 9 PM unable to fall asleep again for several hours. Coughing and wheezing worse this morning, after ingesting so much dust yesterday, so I skipped BC this morning and slept a little longer.

Sunday Jul 30, 2006 #

Note

I worked all day at the Cranky Money - 3 off road bike races at Wakefield Park in Annandale, Virginia. Hot, humid, and dusty.

Saturday Jul 29, 2006 #

Note

Any idea what kind of snake Sarah and I ran into on the trail the other day?

Note

Another couple of hours in the yard finishing up the work I do anually while Roger is out of town. I wisely spread it out over the week this year, instead of killing myself all in one day. Today was cleaning under the magnolia tree and trimming the rest of the bushes.
I managed to cut through another extension cord - oops.

Biking 30:00 [2] 4.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Rode my bike from home to the Claredon metro stop. I had to walk up the Walter Reed Drive HILL!!
An interesting metro experince going to the Rockville station after transferring at Metro Center. Took two incorrect elevators and ended up on the wrong tracks.

Orienteering (Mark Twain School) 51:50 [3] 2.6 mi (19:56 / mi)
shoes: Silva K80

HOT, HUMID edition of QOC's Summer Series. Nadim set the courses - very nice, until I took a 90 out of #11 and eventually went all the way to the big road. Got almost back to 12 when I accepted that I really didn't have enough energy to do anymore.
Still have some chest congestion, though it is looser than it has been.

Misc 5:00 [1]
slept:5.0

Today was the last day of the current session, and our group challenged the Bluemont group to Ultimate Frisbee at the Bluemont site. I went knowing I wouldn't really be participating since I am still wheezing. I took my camera along. I did do two warm up laps. And after we scored, we had to do pushups. I did those, and we scored a lot. I think I did 5 x 20 pushups.

I am glad I wasn't playing. The other side hadn't played before, and there were too many people on the field with 12 per side. A big messy game. Enjoyed taking pictures.

Thursday Jul 27, 2006 #

Note

Skipped BC again since my cold is hanging around, and I am still wheezing. :(

I did spend 2.5 hours this evening trimming the holly bushes. Back sore again, as it has been all week. And my left hamstring has been sore all day.

Slept poorly again last night - fell asleep a little easier but then was awake every 15 minutes for the rest of the night (or at least it seemed like that). I have tried hard work, exercise, and cold meds. Tonight I was thinking of seeing if a bottle of wine would do the trick, but I am too tried after my shower to go downstairs.

Walking (Hike with Sarah) 2:45:00 [1] 7.0 mi (23:34 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Omni Trail

A hike with Sarah. A head/chest cold made skipping BC this morning an excellent idea. Now, if I could have slept in instead, but I was still up by 6, and Sarah slept until 8.

Off to mow and weed whack.

Misc 1:00:00 [2]
slept:5.0 weight:179lbs shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 1

A little pooped from this weekend, so I considered skipping this morning, but today was free session day, and I like seeing who comes out for this. Today, 4 out of 5 of the potential recruits were quite overweight and out of shape. I am guessing that we may see one of them sign up for next month.
Good session of tricep work, as well as Mountain Climbers, and lots of ab work. Some sprinting in between, and not one jumping jack.
It felt almost cool to start this morning.

Note

Spent ~3 hours yesterday afternoon and ~6 hours today decluttering the house with my mother's huge assistance. Roger is out of town...two full car loads of his paper collection went to the recycle center. Still have two closets full of boxes of paper, but I can't get rid of it all, and I can't see the stuff, so I am content with it the way it is now.
My mom also cleaned the fridge yesterday while I played around elsewhere. What a great mom!!

Running 29:00 [3] 2.7 mi (10:44 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:179lbs shoes: Saucony Omni Trail

Kissy, peggyd, and I participated in an AR called the DC Diet. Unsupported, no fee, no awards, etc., but an excellent time. My only complaint was that it was advertised as around 29 miles, but it actually was closer to 40, though 2 of the miles was on the metro train.

Day starts out a bit dreary and sunblock seems to be a wasted effort.

Started with a 1.6 mile trail run around Roosevelt Island, and then headed across the Key Bridge to Jack's Boathouse.

Misc race (Canoeing) 44:00 [3] 2.5 mi (17:36 / mi)

The canoeing part of the event - from Jack's around Roosevelt Island and back. Head wind while going down the Potomac River, and also while coming back. Sure am gald that I have been doing those pushups.

Sun has come out and stays out the rest of the day. Happy for the SPF 50 except when it runs into my eyes while paddling.

Biking (All around DC) 2:52:00 [3] 28.0 mi (6:09 / mi)

Gosh, my butt sure is sore! Got our bikes after getting out of the canoe - they had been delivered to Jack's for us. Head from here to Hains Point, Ft McNair, Sousa Bridge, RFK, National Arboretum, Union Station, Adams Morgan via the metro boarded at the Verizon (formerly know as the MCI Center), National Cathedral, Rock Creek Park, Key Bridge, Roosevelt Island.

I had to walk my bike up the hill to the Cathedral - butt really dragging at that point. Peggy and Kris wisely stayed behind me through Rock Creek Park, or else they would have probably finished 2 miles ahead of me.

Only two guys finished ahead of us. Though it wasn't a "competition", we did want to do well.

The biking was a bit too much for my untrained butt and legs. And if I known that it was going to take so much longer than the predicted time, I would have made sure I had eaten more then a GU and 4 Nutter Butters. I think I did drink enough, though I was 4 pounds lighter when I got home.

It was a great format, great company, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Well, maybe not tomorrow...

Running 17:00 [1] 0.5 mi (33:59 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Omni Trail

Walking around the around the National Arboretum for the "orienteering" portion of the competion. Stopped at the visitor's center for a pit stop and some cool air.

Misc 1:00:00 [3]
slept:6.0 shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 1

Matt was the instructor again today - very regimented, hop to it kind of guy, which I am fine with...though today, I was breathing a little heavy at one point and had to slow down a little...
Worked the biceps and calves. JJ, MC, Burpees, pushups, planking as well.

Misc 20:00 [1]
slept:6.0 weight:181lbs shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 2

Bobby was the instrcutor today. Did some jogging to warmup, then stretching, and some ab stuff. Then off for a run.

Running 38:00 [3] 4.0 mi (9:30 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 1

Changed shoes and then off for a run. A quick calculation showed that I could get 4 miles in if I didn't dawdle at the beginning, so I took off down the trail. Gina caught up with me at about the 1.75 point, and we did the rest together. Good run, and it was a few degrees cooler this morning, and a little lower humidity.

Misc 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Substitute instructor, Matt. He was like a Wolf clone. Wolf is the owner of the BC business, and he can be pretty intense. I like Matt. He kept us moving the whole time. Lots of upper body stuff with the bands, as well as Mountain Climbers in between.
Very good session.

Misc 50:00 [3] 2.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6

Butt dragging a bit this morning - it is always hard after I work an event all day the day before... Woke up late, but it good to go, kind of...zoned out for the beginning part getting sleep out of my eyes and adjusting the shoes I had grabbed out of the closet. I proceeded to moan about the shoes after realizing they were 1/2 size smaller than the ones I wear these days - same model, just smaller. After 50 jj, we headed out for the 2.5 mile loop with stops for added things. Shoes too small, especially with 2 pairs of socks onl!! Toes hitting the front. Right side has toe hole.
Came back and finished with some situps.
Sweat just pouring off. Untied the offending shoes and left them on the trash can. Need to to the same to other 5 pairs in my closet. I haven't worn them in about a year - why am I keeping them?!

Sunday Jul 16, 2006 #

Note

Spent the day working the finish line for an off road triathalon near Flintstone, Maryland. Picked up Sarah on the way and was talking so much that I missed the exit for I 70 and was 5 miles down Route 15 before realizing it. Oops. Enjoyable day though a bit warm.

Trail Run (Potomac Heritage) 2:00:00 [2] 7.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
weight:182lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6

Parked at Fort Marcy located off the GW Pkwy in Fairfax county. Got on the Potomac Heritage Trail and headed north for 60 minutes each way. Slow going in the part below Turkey Run. I didn't remember it being so poor there. Went I got home, I realized that I have never done the part below TR because I usually climb up to TR cross over and then down and miss the bad parts...
Turned my ankle painfully about 45 minutes in. It is sore but okay. Ran well on the flat parts.
Enjoyed the outing. Saw no wildlife going out except a male cardinal. Coming back I saw a heron, a deer, missed stepping on a black snake by an inch, a turtle on the trail, and near the Potomac River, four big black birds with wide wing spans. They reminded me of the bird from the cartoon where the bird sings about a baby bumblebee - buzzard or vultures, I believe.

Note

Probably ran into about 50 cobwebs on the way out. Even carried a stick ahead of me for a while to see if it would help - it didn't really...
My favorite were the ones which I hit when I was ducking down low to avoid overhanging branches - full face. On the way back I ran into two - an area that I had gone around to the left going out, I picked the other side coming back. Dumb choice since I hadn't cleared the webs...

Note
slept:6.0 weight:181lbs (rest day)

Wide awake again at 4 AM, though I fell back to sleep for a little while after that. Had already decided not to go to BC today. Plan to run tomorrow.

Misc 1:00:00 [2]
slept:4.0 weight:184lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6

Woke up at 3:30 and couldn't fall back to sleep. At 4:30, Roger called up to tell me that three racoons were on the deck, so I hustled down to see them - a mother in the recycle bin & 2 teenagers.
Another sticky morning, and because of a few rain drops, we sought shelter in the garage, which just made it worse.
Anyway, it was a pretty decent session - jj (60, 70, 80, 90), standing lunges, and wall sits. A little running then some easy arm stuff and pushups (3 x 15). Some situps at the end.

Wednesday Jul 12, 2006 #

Misc 1:00:00 [3]
weight:184lbs shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 2

Easy jog to start, then stretching, 20 jj, 10 pushups, then the good stuff. Burpees, Mountain Climbers, Body Shapers x 10, 15, and 20 each. Seesion also included a Ranger Run of about 1 mile with added in stuff - high knees, butt kicks, side shuffle. Finished with abs (situps for me, crunches for the rest).
Soaking wet when I got home.

Note

First time on the Four Mile Run trail behind the house since the flood. Things are cleaned up with just one bridge needing replaced still.

Note

Rough two days at work - typical for the next month. Moving lots of student files into boxes, then moving the boxes. My left wrist is killing me this evening, cuticles are torn up, and forearm is bruised. What a great day!! Well, maybe not the injured part - but I loved being busy.

Misc 1:00:00 [2]
slept:6.0 weight:184lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6

Good session today, though warm and humid even at 6 AM. Started with JJ and pushups. Then ab work in the increasing 10 sets - 1 flutter kick, 1 crunch, 1 situp, 2 fk, 2 c, 2 su...up to 10. Followed this with the same thing in pushups, shoulder press, mountain climbers. FInished with squat, squat pulse, calf raises. Did about .5 around the regular loop, up the garage steps, across the top, down the steps, around the parking lot x 2, then 1 more time later.
Finished with crunches - I did situps, flutter kicks, leg raises, etc.
Weight has balloned. I wish I could say that I had no idea why, but eating the junk food, in addition to three meals a day, is not good.

Monday Jul 10, 2006 #

Misc 20:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 1

Started with 30 jj, 30 Mountain Climbers, 30 Burpess, then about 15 minutes of ab work.

Running 28:38 [3] 3.1 mi (9:14 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 1

Meant to grab my newer shoes on the way out the door in case we ran today, but I forgot... We did the run after the ab work. I wasn't really warmed up, so I took it easy to start and kicked it in a bit on the return trip.
Up the bike trail 1.5 miles and back. Splits for each half: 558 (includes a bit more from the parking lot to the start) 444 456 437 414 409.

Sunday Jul 9, 2006 #

Note

Spent time this weekend cleaning the basement and mowing the lawn. Also watched lots of sports. Monday will be tough for this sports junkie - no tennis, golf, soccer, or cycling (TDF rest day)...

Friday Jul 7, 2006 #

Running 9:34 [4] 1.25 mi (7:39 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:179lbs shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 1

Time is for the fast 400s x 5
400m jog, 400m fast x 3 was the prescribed workout, also jogged one at the end. Splits were 240 200 244 152 245 200 244

Then we did some squats, then 400m fast x 2. The times for these were 149 and 143. Everyone in my group beat me on the 1st, then I beat them all but one on the 2nd. I tore out front, way too fast, and then wondered when I was going to blow up. I kept thinking like I was leading the TDF and the peloton was going to swarm on me right before the finish...

Running 15:45 [2] 1.5 mi (10:30 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 1

Two warmup laps, then the laps between the 400s.
We didn't really do anything else today but warmup and cool down stretching for 12 minutes.

Neck was really painful last night. I even broke out the heating pad.
Poison ivy oozing nicely today.

Misc 1:00:00 [2]
slept:7.0 weight:179lbs shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 2

Raining this morning, so we were under cover in the parking garage, though it had stopped by then. Toured the damage to the baseball field before class started. Four Mile Run was running over the foot bridges again.

Session was a good one - arm work with bands, abs, jj, running up the garage steps.

Neck is stiff again on left side.
Poison ivy on left forearm and left thigh is irritated by the sweating.

Misc 50:00 [3]
slept:7.0 weight:180lbs shoes: Saucony 7 - Banana 1

Felt fairly good for the second day in a row. Though I had to voice my opinion that the rotations on today's schedule was a bit assinine...
Started with Body Shapers (down, thrust legs out, 2 push ups, and up) x 10, 10, 15. In between was pushups x 10, 20, 30. Then the next rotation was pushups x 10, 10, 20, 20, 30, 30 (I think) and in between was a one arm hold in push up position.
Now, this was a ridiculous amount by itself, and then Chris announced that the next set was inclined pushups! Some grumbled quietly, and I protested loudly. Serioulsy, how could all those push ups be good for anyone?!
So, Chris improvised with a short run around the lot, then sets of flutter kicks, bicycle, scissor kicks, and crunches x 3 sets. Then Burpees and bench dips. Finished with more abs.
Very good session after resolving the pushup issues.

Note

Was thinking that maybe I should only record actual moving time in Total Time for the Boot Camp sessions. We do about 10-15 minutes of each sessions on light stretching and transitions. Not that this will solve any potential over taining issues, but it will better reflect the harder activities and how the hours are adding up.

Ab work at the end.
Good session.

Back to BC after the quarterly break. Didn't mean to take all of last week off, but it turned out that way.
Jumping jacks, mountain climbers, jumping rope, sprints, abs after the Ranger Run below.

Running 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 1

1.6 mile Ranger Run and .4 mile warmup.

Orienteering race 1:41:00 [3] *** 5.45 km (18:32 / km) +200m 15:40 / km
weight:180lbs shoes: Silva K80

~3 hour drive each way to French Creek North in PA in order to go out on a hot, muggy day in an area that I don't really do all that well on, or like all that much. I must be a glutton for punishment. I also forgot my O pants. Contemplated going out in my shorts, but Mary Frank came to the rescue, and I actually fit in the pants - though not much room to spare. :)
Actual distance was 5.1 miles.
About 17 minutes of errors - regressed a bit to some bad habits of a year ago: 1) getting to a trail and just winging it into the woods instead of making sure I had some idea first, 2) letting someone lead me their way instead of staying with my plan, 3) not making a plan when going into a vague area.
However, I also made a plan on the longest leg and executed it perfectly.

Note

I was getting dressed this morning to go out for a trail walk when the phone rang. Roger was calling from work - there was water leaking from the 2nd floor into the computer room and the training room. So, I drove over our tarps, helped get buckets under things, ran the wet vac once the water source was discovered and turned off, and then it was too late to get out...
