Misc (Situps/Pushups) 5:00 [1] 0.0 mi

Three sets of 20 situps & 20 pushups. Then I made the mistake of turning my head and looking under the bed. Had to break out the vacuum!! Off to Colorado in a couple of hours.

Mowing/Yard warm up/down0.0 mi
weight:187lbs

Spent 4.5 hours in the yard weeding and mowing. Traditionally, this time of year I also trim the bushes - about 4 more hours work. But I ran out of steam and decided I could live with them for now. Oh, yeah, I'm leaving town tomorrow and won't even have to see the shaggy bushes for 8 days.

Misc (Kick Ball)0.0 mi

The last day of Boot Camp was a group activity day, so we played kick ball. Would have preferred doing a workout. Ankle is still a little tender, but groin is not.

Note

So, I did a month of Boot Camp sessions. My Cons and Pros -
Cons first:
1. Fun/group activity on last day of month - I would pass on that - I rather have the regular workout.
2. Woman who brought 2 yappy poodles to the sessions needs to muzzle those mutts. Barking dogs at 6 am is a bit hard to handle for me.
Pros -
1. I fit into my size 18 shorts again comfortably. Though I only lost 4 pounds, I moved a couple of more pounds around to somewhere else.
2. I was top of AP for 1/2 of a day - well, until the AR people updated their logs.
3. I had perfect attendance for the month, and I was the only one - reminded me of my 4 years of perfect attendance in high school...of course, I made up for that stupidity in college and got a D in Human Sexuality for lack of regular attendance.

Running 30:00 [1] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:187lbs

The BC instructor didn't show up, so we did a little bit of stretching and then went for a run. Wanting to go through the park, we stuck together for safety reasons. A little slow. I ran all the way up the hill today and it didn't look as huge as it did on Jul 4th.

Misc (Boot Camp) 20:00 [1] 0.0 mi

No instructor today. Did some warmup, ab work, and the bike ride back and forth.

Biking (To Saturn dealer) 20:00 [2] 3.0 mi (6:40 / mi)

Had to pick up the car sometime. Also needed to drop off my bike for routine maintenace. Bike shop 1 block from Saturn dealer - a twofer and a short workout as well. And bought some bike shoes, so it was a fourfer. Struggled up a big long hill but made it without stopping. Put to shame when driving home - a woman was powering up the same hill and she had a toddler with her!

Misc (Boot Camp Day Whatever) 1:05:00 [1] 0.0 mi

Two more days of BC to go. I think this morning was the warmest, most humid yet - dripping wet before stretching was done. Let's see - jumping jacks, calf raises, bench squats, ranger run, arm circling, pushups (20, 20, and 20 which I couldn't do) alternated with Mountain Climber. Ugghhh!!! Then situps with legs straight & foot on top of the other foot - 20 x 2. Then leg raises and flutter kicks. I am pretty good at these. Hopefully the rain will come through early this afternoon so that I can bike over and get my car back from the dealer...

Biking (From car dealer) 20:00 [1] 3.0 mi (6:40 / mi)
slept:11.0 weight:187lbs

Meant to take the car to the dealer last night but fell aslep at 6 pm, woke at 9 pm, turned over and went back to sleep until 5 this morning. I guess I was tired... So, I drove to the dealer this morning before BC and rode bike back. Took a little scenic tour through a neigborhood I didn't really need to tack onto the trip. Rode all the way up the hill to home without stopping...

Misc (Boot Camp Day 17) 1:00:00 [1] 0.0 mi

Got to BC camp right at 6 AM. Stretching, and then calf raises, jump rope, repeat. The squats, pulsing squats, and lifting the leg to the side with resistance band. Running involved running down the hill and back up it twice. Breathing not too good at this point, but I made it up without stopping. Then we did ab work. The crunches made me nauseous again. Ride back home. A good morning. Groin and ankle still sore but not too painful. Weight after BC was 185, so I am drinking water as we speak.

Misc (Boot Camp Day 16) 1:00:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:6.0 weight:188lbs

I did not want to get up this morning and then it started raining, so I was even more inclined to crawl back into bed. But I rised and shined and was glad for it. Groin is still tender in the pushoff position, but does not hurt at all when running. Today's session was about 1/2 mile run and stretching. Then this thing called Mountain Climber - down in a bridge position and moving feet back and forth. I hate this exercise more than any other one. We did sets of these with a sprint in between. Then flutter kick sets, then push ups (10, 15, 10). I actually did 15 of these in the non-girlie position - didn't get all the way down, but still hard work... Finally unassisted situps (30, 40, 10) with jumping rope in between. I can actually get myself off the floor into a full situp - I couldn't do this 3 weeks ago. Hmmm, two pounds of junk food yesterday, I guess...

Sunday Jul 24, 2005 #

None 0.0 mi
weight:186lbs (rest day)

A well deserved rest day - didn't leave the house all day. Messed with the computer, did 3 loads of laundry, ate too much junk food, watched the Tour finale.

Turned my right ankle during the first sprint yesterday. Also may have pulled something in my right groin area at the same time. Of course, I was stupid and did the second sprint anyway. Running was fine - but it hurts when I am walking and leg is fully extended back in the push off position...

Misc (Boot Camp Day 15) 1:10:00 [2] 3.0 mi (23:20 / mi)
slept:7.0

Today is the end of week 3 of Boot Camp, and it was the toughest day yet. So I'll give it a 2 as an average though the majority of it was probably a 3, but the stretching and biking over and back are a 1.
Anyway, bike to site, walk 200m, jog 400m, stretch, 20 jumping jacks, and then run to track (~400 m). Then we run 4 laps as a fitness test. For some reason, despite a sore right hip, I am feeling good right away. My laps were 223 213 215 153! (love that finishing kick) for a total 1600m of 844.
A short water break and then the real fun begins - jump rope around the track for 1 lap, run backwards for 1 lap, and repeat both again. Then we ran backwards with someone holding a resistance band around your waist. Well, I end up with one of the instructors, and though she didn't put maximum pressure on the band, she also didn't let me slack off like some of the others were doing. I jog another lap while waiting for the others to switch and finish. Then crunches and full situps - which I am finally able to do without someone holding my feet. Jog back to the start and cool down. Bike home. Whew!! Oh, and my weight is down 5 pounds from the start of the month...and I need to remember to ice my hip tonight.

Thursday Jul 21, 2005 #

Misc (Boot Camp Day 14) 1:10:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:7.0

Bike ride down and back. Jog to warm up, stretch, then into gluts - hmmm, squats, pulsing squats, walking lunges, and variations of other things that worked the gluts like lifting the leg to the side while on hands and kness. In same position, leg to the back in straight and 90 degree angle. Some calf work which I didn't do very well because I was bending my knees. This is when I noticed my ankle... No ab work, so I did 20 situps when I got home. Hard workout.

Note

My right hip flexor is very painful this evening - 4 Advil and "some" wine later - not so painful. Played it safe and passed on a run since tomorrow's BC session is "supposed" to be lots of running in spurts...

Misc (Boot Camp Day 13) 1:00:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:6.0 weight:189lbs

Slept soundly last night and it was tougher to get up at 5:20 this morning. Rode to BC site, then a little stretching and jogging before the session started. More stretching, then pushups (55 modified - I can not do regular ones because of the tendonitis in my right forearm). We also did jump rope, 30 more pushups, and upper body stuff with the bands. Then into ab work - crunches in various positions, leg lifts, scissor and pulse position. Lots less humid today. Right ankle is still a bit sore, but not painful and running doesn't seem to bother it, so I will try to get a few miles in after work tonight.

Walking warm up/down (Treadmill) 20:00 [1] 1.2 mi (16:40 / mi)

Evening workout on the treadmill. Walk 3 min, ran a mile, walk 8 min, ran a mile, walk 3 min, ran a mile, walk 3 min, ran a mile, walk 3 min.

Running (Treadmill) 43:15 [2] 4.0 mi (10:49 / mi)

Put the heart rate monitor on that came with the new treadmill - it is a PaceMaster Gold Elite...Ran their Fitness monitor program - 3 min warmup, run a mile at my pace (11:15), 5 min cool down. My rating was 100 - which is the highest. This seemed very suspect, so I did the test again - 3 min warm up, ran a faster mile (10:00), 3 min cool down. Score still 100. Shrugged my shoulders and ran 2 more miles (11:00 and 11:00) with 3 min walk in between since I was all warmed up... Left hip tightened up a little at the end of the third mile. Threw 50 sit ups in afterwards just because.

Running (BC Run) 37:36 [2] 3.45 mi (10:54 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:190lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Boot Camp run - just a little shorter than the one 2 weeks ago (42:20 for 3.6 miles) - which was the day after the 4 DVOA sprints, so my legs were deader than... Started out a little too fast with a 9:54 mile, followed by 10:10, then pretty much walk/ran from there in 12:16. Did manage to mostly run up the 1/4 mile long hill. It was so hot - 79 at 6 AM.

Misc (Boot Camp Day 12) 30:00 [1] 0.0 mi

Bike ride to and fro, stretching, lots of crunches - which I have discovered that the twisting crunches make me nauseous...

Misc (Boot Camp Day 11) 1:00:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:7.0 weight:190lbs

Instructor didn't have much energy today, and there was a lot of whining in the humid conditions (6-7 AM). I ran down to the track well, but I struggled to do the 3 laps doled out. Often find that I am stiff after working a long event the day before.

Biking (W&OD Vienna/Leesburg) 3:44:00 [2] 40.75 mi (5:30 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:191lbs

Passed out last night sometime after 9 (No! No alcohol or drugs were involved). Up before 6 this morning. Drove to Vienna, VA (~11.75 mile mark) and parked next to the W&OD - great spots there at 7 AM! The trail closer to home would have had some flooded parts with all the rain the last two nights...
Cycled out to Leesburg (32 mile mark) and then back. Lots of road crossings - 2 difficult ones. Stopped for a break about 15.5 miles in and had a GU. Stopped on the way back twice, once to give bandaids and lend my towel to a runner who had fallen, and once for a diet Coke. I had the bandaids as an afterthought because I get blisters on my thumbs sometimes...
Last 4 miles were a struggle, especially the last two which are uphill.
Excellent day!

Misc (Boot Camp Day 10) 50:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:6.0

The end of the 2nd week of BC. Little short on time today because it was raining a little and people whined to go inside. So, we went to the nearby rec center. Ran a little, then lots of upper body (shoulder) stuff. Also pushups which I managed to do today the girlie way. Cannot do these outside on the pavement... Ab work, of course, at the end. The outside of my right ankle is sore today - probably from the jumping rope.

Walking warm up/down (Wakefield track & home) 29:00 [1] 1.9 mi (15:16 / mi)

Drove home from BC to drop off the car and then jogged down to the track. This is 7 laps of walking in between and after the miles recorded below.

Running (Wakefield HS Track) 47:26 [2] 4.6 mi (10:19 / mi)

Figured I would get some running in while the Advil was still working...
Ran down to track (3:10) and then ran 4 laps in lane 6, walked a lap, then repeated 3 more times. Finished up with 4 laps of walking.
Very humid morning - dripping buckets. I didn't think I could do the 4th set, but I got it done.

Misc (Boot Camp Day 9) 1:10:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:6.0 weight:190lbs

Well, I wondered whether we would do any jump roping, or is it jumping rope or rope jumping?, and today I found out. 4x3 minutes with upper body band stuff in between. I tried to jump slowly, but that was actually harder than jumping fast. So, that is what I did, and I did better than what I thought I could. Provided rope was too light and a bit short. Other novelty item was bench squats - very difficult. And then we did 3x30 leg lifts. Very humid morning. Right knee is a bit sore, but nothing Advil can't mask. :)

Misc (Boot Camp Day 8) 1:10:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:5.0 weight:191lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Slept better last night but woke up at 3:20 & was unable to fall back to sleep.
Today, I left the house a little earlier and rode bike around a bit more than usual. We ran about 1.5 miles today. I was feeling a bit nauseous near the end of today's session - during the million crunches in various positions. I only ate a banana beforehand. I find that I need to have toast or a breakfast bar as well, or I start feeling sick - the opposite of what others experience...
Suicide sprints were the novelty item of the day.

Running (Treadmill) 36:20 [1] 3.0 mi (12:07 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Tried out the new treadmill. This one is in the basement - no window to look out of like when it was in the bedroom. But a fan sits on the freezer behind the tradmill and makes it bearable. Am listing to the tunes on my new IPod in alphabetical order.

Run wasn't fast - some 4.5 mph, mostly 5.0, and some 5.5 mph. Very nice machine. Now I'll should read the manual and see what else it can do for me. About 6 minutes of warm up/cool down not included.

Misc (Boot Camp Day 7) 1:10:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:5.0 weight:191lbs

Didn't sleep well last night but had no problem getting up. Ride down and back to the site. Today - lots of variation of push ups, situps, jumping jacks, and other ab things. Oh, yeah, arm raises without the band and squats. A little bit of running - maybe 1/4 mile. A good day.

Monday Jul 11, 2005 #

Misc (Boot Camp Day 6) 1:10:00 [1] 0.0 mi
slept:5.0 weight:191lbs

I am waking up a little before the alarm goes off at 5:20 ready to get out of bed - a good feeling. I am surprised that my body held up to last week. The variety of activity helped.

Today included some ranger run, some sprints on the track, lots of situps, some jogging, jumping jacks (I am getting better at these), and the bike ride to and fro.

Thanks to the Advil, everything feels fine. Though I am already starving for lunch 3 hours after breakfast. I guess I need to bring a snack to work. Luckily, the vending machines don't hold much appeal or I would be raiding them.

Biking (Mt Vernon Bike Trail) 3:30:00 [2] 36.0 mi (5:50 / mi)

Parked at Roosevelt Island lot and rode to Mount Vernon and back. Got a little confused at Jones Point and visited the dog park briefly. The trail actually stops short of the Mount Vernon historical site proper, but I had come all that way so I circled in front before heading back. The hill from mile 1 to 0 was a killer on the way to MTV. And since I am a wuss about speeding downhill - especially when it is a twisting, narrow, shady trail - the downhill wasn't all that much fun either.

I really enjoyed this ride despite how crowded and tight it is in parts. Very glad to have gotten out early - home by 11:15...

Only part I didn't like (besides the hill) was the overpass along the GW parkway which is right next to the road. I would do this one again.

Note

Spent several hours each of the last 3 days clearing out the basement of water, rugs, etc. Then replacing everything today. This should be the last time since we know what the culprit was and have resolved the drain problem.

Trail Run (Warm up/cool down) 16:00 [1] 1.2 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Silva K80 2

From the car to the start point & back for the Summer Series training at Great Falls. Did this in the morning since I am not able to make the evening session. Forgot I had put my Forerunner on top of the car to get satallites and had to run back partway for it. This park continues to get poor satallite reception.

Orienteering (Loop B @ GF MD) 1:05:00 [2] *** 2.9 km (22:25 / km) +120m 18:34 / km
shoes: Silva K80 2

A couple of errors (7, 16, 18, 19). Also slowed to take some pictures. Must have eaten about 30 spider webs and had one FDF after me too. Bit me once - not sure how PG stands it. Very painful, But after one bite and swat, it never came back.

Orienteering (Loop A @ GF MD) 59:00 [2] *** 2.8 km (21:04 / km) +105m 17:45 / km
shoes: Silva K80 2

Pushed harder on this but still slower than I would have liked. Harder to see the controls since they are just streamers. Fumbled on 1!, 5, 9, 16. Totally soaked when done. Spider webs covered glasses. A fine day!

Misc (Boot Camp Day 5) 1:00:00 [1] 0.0 mi
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

The instructor said we were meeting outside "rain or shine." To show him how tough I am, I run to the site from the house only to find out that we are meeting inside about a mile away. Well, I am soaking wet for nothing. What a wuss he was this morning, and the other 8 people who didn't show up! Gluts were the pleasure area for today. He ran behind again and we didn't do much ab work.

This weekend's exciting activity is cleaning the basement once again - this time it was inches of water. Turns out it wasn't the gutters, but the sump drain in the corner of the basement. The outlet was blocked with rocks and peanuts in the shell.

Misc (Boot Camp Day 4) 1:10:00 [1] 0.0 mi
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Bike to site, a little warm up, and then put through our paces. Different instructor today - Jeff who was tougher than Julie - late comers had to do push ups or a lap. I liked him better. Lots of lunges, sqauts, upper body stuff with bands, and ab work. We did about a 1.25 miles of running today spread out over the hour. Ride home. Thank goodness for my Advil!!

Wednesday Jul 6, 2005 #

Misc (Boot Camp Day 3) 1:00:00 [1] 0.0 mi
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Wore my heart rate monitor today but hit the wrong button and turned off the tracking...Regular routine includes up at 5:20, 4 Advil, asthma meds, a little breakfast and then ride to the meeting site. I ride a little extra and jog up and back on the grass as well. Today included no running. Lots of push ups in different variations which I am unable to really do because of the tendinitis in my right forearm. I did what I could but took 10 minutes off from my total time for the slacking off... The ab work is killing me but is just what I need.

Running/Walking (Wakefield HS Track) 43:47 [2] 3.4 mi (12:53 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6

Not sure why I thought that I needed more exercise today - but since I hadn't really run today, I popped the pills and went for it. Down to the track and then alternate laps running and walking in lane 6. Times were: 300 (from house) 421 (tie shoes) 243 404 237 429 (adjust shoes again) 238 409 (shoes again!) 237 355 237 636 (walk home with a little extra thrown in).
A little tired and aching. Nothing really painful, but then how could I tell with all the Advil.

Misc (Boot Camp Day 2) 1:10:00 [2] 0.0 mi
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6

2nd session of Boot Camp for Women. Rode bike to the meeting place. Jogged a bit to loosen up. Then the hour session and rode back home afterwards. Session over at 7:01, home at 7:05, showered and out the door and at my desk at 7:31 - only 1 minute late.

Only about 1 mile running today. Lots of abs, jumping jacks (Miss Coordination on these), more abs, arm work with band thingees, more abs. I can feel it.

Note

Planned to bike after work (after the usual after work nap), but the storms rolled in and I was off the hook. Maybe tomorrow.

Running as part of the Boot Camp for Women sessions I signed up for - month of July - up and at the local high school by 5:50. Run was okay, but had to walk up the long hill. Legs dead from yesterday.

Misc (Boot Camp Day 1) 35:00 [1] 0.0 mi

Orienteering (Ridley Creek Sprint 1) 39:46 [3] *** 2.6 km (15:18 / km) +95m 12:56 / km
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

The first of the DVOA Independence Day Sprints at Ridley Creek. Legs dead for this one - thought I would do better since I was freshest. Wore shorts and running shoes. Long pants and O shoes wold have been better.
Lost time on 4 and 9, and really messed up 10.

Orienteering (Ridley Creek Sprint 2) 31:05 [4] *** 2.8 km (11:06 / km) +75m 9:47 / km
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Didn't go out first on this one. Ron W was up ahead of me, so I gave him a cushion of 1:09 min then went and hunted him down. It was fun. He fumbled on 2 and 6, so he was slightly ahead. I fumbled on 6 but found it first. Ended up tied.

Orienteering (Willows Sprint 3) 37:38 [4] *** 3.24 km (11:37 / km) +95m 10:08 / km
shoes: Silva K80 1

Got lost going to this site. Well, I got lost going to the Ridley as well. Just one of those frustrating driving days...
Got to Willows after others were out, so I hustled so I could be back to relieve Sandy. Lower expectations resulted in a pretty clean run. The two that most people had trouble with, I lucked into.

Orienteering (Willows Sprint 3 (in reve) 39:47 [3] *** 3.24 km (12:17 / km) +95m 10:43 / km
shoes: Silva K80 1

This was the 1st Willows sprint in reverse order. Did it with Heidi since we were both pooped and she only started 20 seconds behind me. Enjoyable but exhausting day.
