Used the QOC event at Clopper Lake today to do a test run of the display stands for the upcoming A-meets that I am supporting. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture, but I think it is going to work out much better than the projectors.
Setup went really well, much easier to do then the projector screens, and I was so happy to be just about ready with an hour to go. I was assembling the last of the radios to be put out when it was discovered that the maps for White-Green (5 courses worth) were last weeks maps. After printing Blue and Red yesterday, I somehow switched over to a different folder and printed 200 incorrect maps. Agh! Luckily, there was a Staples fairly close by, and just before 11, the official course opening times, I was back with 4 of the 5 courses, and someone else brought the rest about 10 minutes later. Crises averted, but I really need to be better focused when doing this kind of stuff.
Had decided to put out controls at these locations, with the master radio at the Start triangle and using a directional antenna pointed across the lake. Took the bazooka off since it was top heavy, so dealing with the lighter antenna only made it much easier to get the directional antenna mounted and pointed in the right direction on top of the 20 ' pole.
Here is the view down from the pavilion towards 8.
And the view from 8 back up to the pavilion. You can just see the roof.
And, across the water from below 8 to 4.
Radios 4 & 5 were my reach goal, though with the foliage, I had no idea if the other ones would work either. Tom and Mary got them out, and I was able to see from the Test Battery page that I was getting signal from all of them. Skillful planning, or dumb luck, I don't really care because it cheered me up from the map printing fiasco.
The results display was a big hit, as usual, though I do need to sort out the time issue as it relates to people using SI-5 cards. I didn't notice this last week because I only had Start and Finish radios. People started with SI-5 cards after 12 noon had AM recorded for their Start and Finish times and time of PM for the intermediate radio controls, so their splits were 12+ hours long on the display. Something to do with zero time?
I also tried to upload results via o-lynx live, but no joy there. Not sure if this was also related to the zero time/time of day issue or just not strong enough internet. Will have to investigate this as well.
Anyway, despite the glitches and the ankle boot, it was a great day to be outside. Thank you to everyone who pitched in during the day. Couldn't have processed the 200+ starts as efficiently without the extra hands.
