8 AM

Walking (Walk to start) 15:31 [1] 1.0 mi (15:31 / mi) +70m 12:45 / mi
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Day 1 of the 32 Annual West Point A-Meet was staged out of Round Pond.

What a beautiful place.

Got ready and then walked to the start.

9 AM

Orienteering race (West Point - Green Y Midd) 1:05:26 [4] *** 3.5 km (18:42 / km) +140m 15:35 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

GPS = 3.17 miles and 163 m climb
Error time ~15:00

Route

Excited about competing again, though feeling somewhat tempered by the fact that I don't orienteer well at West Point on general principle. I didn't totally disprove that principle, but I did well enough, for me, that I was happy at the end.

Did not go far enough to 1 and then got nervous and drawn off to another control. Happy with navigation to 2 and 3. A bit miffed at 4 because I went right by the boulder on one side and didn't see it until the second pass on the opposite side. Hosed 5 by getting too high and then fighting with the blueberry to add insult to injury. Controls 6-9 went well, but the miss to 10 was a surprise when I saw the tracks. I didn't remember doing that.

It was a beautiful day in the woods, and I had fun hanging out after.
1 PM

Orienteering race (Sprint) 24:24 [4] *** 2.1 km (11:37 / km) +70m 9:58 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

GPS = 1.57 miles and 56 m climb
Error ~1:30

Route

Finished 37/100+. Wow! I didn't even realize that I finished in the top half. Very cool.

Fumbled out of the start into the rose thorn bush stuff. Really happy with seeing and making the correct decision to climb early for #6. Gave back the advantage by staying on the trail too long to #7 and getting hung up in the green.

But, pleased with the race. And, thanks to being able to give a personal prewarning from the spectator control, and Rob noticing that I was finishing, Roger actually got a photo...

5 PM

Note

Had dinner and excellent conversation with Clem and Sandy.

Only sad part of the day was when my phone fell out of my pocket into the toilet.

Walking 10:00 [1] 0.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Drove into NYC from where we were staying in Spring Valley. First order of business - the usual game Roger plays of thinking he can get street parking in Manhattan. After about 30 minutes, I was having a major meltdown caused by driving up and down streets, feeling more and more anxious, so I finally demanded that we get to the parking garage before 10 to get the early bird rate. Ticket said 9:58. I was thoroughly ticked off at this point, so I am writing this down to remind me that next time I will be demanding we garage park right away, or he can drop me off on the corner.

Anyway, after I was out of the car, I was able to tamp down the anxiety and had a pleasant enough day.

Took the subway to Harlem and walked around there for about 40 minutes until the restaurant opened. Had a large lunch followed by a disappointing trip to an athletic store near Rockefeller Center, and then into Greenwich Village. Back to rescue the car, and now we scored a spot easily near a school. Had dinner before heading back to the hotel.

Roger and I headed off to New York this morning. A leisurely trip up the highway, followed by a nap, and then dinner at a so-so Spanish place, and after dinner drinks at a nicer Italian place.

Mowing/Yard (Speed mowing) 10:00 [0]
weight:177lbs

Roger said I didn't need to mow today, but it was going to be too long if left until next week, so I raced around the yard to get it in before the afternoon thunderstorms.

Bad timing for a mini-funk perhaps, but allergies have laid me pretty low this week, along with trying to get a lot of projects finished. So, I will call this a good taper and rest before WP. Lame, but I am not going to beat myself up over it either.

Monday Apr 25, 2011 #

Note
weight:178lbs

OK, back to some serious L&F since I have so easily found 6 pounds over the last two weeks. Not unexpected since I pretty much ate and drank quite liberally. Though, the eating included very little easter candy, which is a real shame.

Sunday Apr 24, 2011 #

Note

Three hours of trimming and cleaning up the holly bushes. I can now see out of the front door again. Yeah!

Morning was so humid and warming up. Felt drained after, and a little battered. So instead of a workout, I enjoyed the last of the spring break doing stuff with Roger, like stopping for a double cheeseburger and then a big brownie sundae with homemade custard. A long nap followed.

I felt like I got lots down during this break. A nice combination of chores, exercise, and relaxation. I give the break an A.

Saturday Apr 23, 2011 #

Note

Race timing: EX2 Greenhorn at Rocky Gap 10 AM start, 5 hour time limit

Left house at 5:10 AM. Raining at home, and threat of thunderstorms in the forecast all day at the park. Little bit of sprinkles about an hour into the race, and then beautiful weather the rest of the day. Sunburned. Home by 6 PM.

Not too stiff or sore from yesterday.

Need to refocus on L&F this coming week.

Orienteering (BCT Too) 3:20:00 [3] *** 10.5 mi (19:03 / mi)
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Based on the public information on the upcoming BG, I channeled the head goat for today's training. I designed a course of 14+ km with 30+ controls (though we left our SI-6 cards at home today). I added some legs which would be good skips to consider, and though I didn't count the climb, I avoided the steeper areas of the park. I was able to use a combination of the newly surveyed permanent controls, as well as some streamers left out from last month. [Note to self - go back and pick those streamers up.]

With Sandy navigating, the goal was to see if we could do the distance in under 3:30 (the BG T-shirt threshold). We pushed right out the start, and though the control locations I selected were somewhat easy at times, we had to stay focused and were quite pleased with the overall effort. Only real navigation issue was at #17 which I had added since the last of the PC was somewhere in that area. I hadn't found it a couple of weeks ago, so I wanted another shot at it.

We didn't find the control post, and went off the clock to try to relocate and try for locating the post again [see Red tracks on map]. I was so determined to have been able to say that I bagged all 60, but it is not to be.

Anyway, I was helped by the cool temperatures and overcast skies, and both Sandy and I sucked it up at different points. Between 16 & 17, I got tangled up in a fallen tree and did a full roll and managed to deeply bruise the back of both thighs. Left thigh has a saucer sized bruise, while the bruise on the right leg is a little smaller.

Just after #24, Sandy stepped into a hole, and I heard a crunch. Fortunately, the crunch was the sound of her shoe scrapping a rock and not an ankle break. After she stopped swearing, she stopped her watch while we pondered our next move. Determined to finish it since we were so close, and doing well up to that point, Sandy gathered herself, and we got moving again, albeit it a bit slower at times downhill and on the flats, but not so you could tell going up the hills, where Sandy was flying up (or so it seemed).

Feeling more positive that we can get close to a BG shirt in three weeks.

Monday night: worked on rankings for a couple oh hours
Tuesday: several hours more on rankings, finished and submitted to jwoc selection committee
Wednesday (today): ~6 hours in yard. Replaced three warped fence boards. Fixed box around herb garden. Made a beautiful new container for the mulch pile. May be a bit too large at 10' long x 4.25' wide x 3' high. I may need a stepladder to get in and out of it. Moved a bunch of mulch to get it in place.

Another beautiful day to be outside.

Trail Run (Lake Accotink) 1:41:00 [2] 8.3 mi (12:10 / mi)
shoes: NB 1064 Blue

Out somewhat earlier then I may have done otherwise, but we were meeting a friend for errands and lunch, so I was motivated to get out before the day was lost to riding around in the car and eating. Good call.

Around Lake Accotink including the spur. Did 2 walk/5 run. Then, around again without doing the extra spur, 5 walk and 2 run. Pushed the run since 2 minutes felt so easy.

Feeling a bit chesty, like I haven't pushed my breathing enough lately.

Biking 38:49 [1] 8.38 mi (4:38 / mi) +12m 4:37 / mi
shoes: Bike Sandals

Rode to work to pick up some files I need to do the rankings (rankings update ETA is tomorrow).

Biking 1:38:30 [1] 20.38 mi (4:50 / mi) +116m 4:45 / mi
shoes: Bike Sandals

After about a 15 minute break at work, I headed out to get a longer ride in. Though, I am thinking that these two together with the short break might qualify for the 30 for April.

Ventured into DC across the 14th Street Bridge. Went to Georgetown, but I didn't want to figure out the Key Bridge crossing, so I rode back and crossed on the Memorial Bridge. This wasn't going to make for an easy/safe way to get back to the GW Pkwy, so I rode back into DC and back to the original bridge. Home from there.
3 PM

Biking 9:00 [2] 1.25 mi (7:12 / mi) +38m 6:35 / mi
shoes: Bike Sandals

Slow slog up the George Mason hill. Stopped half way and collected myself, then found a new mental gear, not bike gear, to get the rest of the way up.

What a beautiful afternoon to be outside!
5 PM

Note

So, besides getting the bike ride in this afternoon, I put waterproofing stuff on the deck this morning. I would say it is another chore crossed off of my Spring Break list, but it was actually a chore Roger had for me to do on his list.

Event: QOC McKeldin

9 AM

Orienteering (McKeldin Red) 1:40:42 [3] 6.6 km (15:15 / km) +430m 11:31 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Forerunner: 5.1 miles with 316 m climb

Arrived at the park just after it opened at 9 AM. Out on the course by 9:15 with a goal to be done by 11:30. Finished with time to spare. Original plan was the 8.8 k Blue course, but we were supposed to have a group of 49 marines show up at ~11:45, and though I had them in the computer already, I didn't want to get back from my course with a backup of people. As it was, the marines lost 30 to late sleepers, and they didn't show up until 12:30 or so.

Physical course with lots of ups and downs - good BG training. Beautiful morning in the woods, and the rest of the meet went very well also.

Spring break, back to work on April 25

Note
weight:172lbs

Weight all week was 172. I am happy with that.

No workout today, but I did the following:
Got up a little after 6 AM (awake every hour since 11 PM, so, heck, just get out of bed already!)
Had breakfast. Recently, I have been obsessing about the cinnamon rolls in the freezer, so this morning I gave in. Had 8 mini x 110 calories each. Not bothered by this, and now I have had my fix for a while.
Scrubbed and power washed the deck (~ 2 hours)
Showered and then went to the home improvement store and lunch with Roger.
Long nap. More sleep in a row then I have had in a week or more.
Worked in basement - printing maps for tomorrow, and setting up meet software, and getting things generally organized.
Download software to do my mother's taxes.
Put together the new smoker. Skipped second nap.
Had thoughts of doing the core workout, but decided not.
Waiting for dinner to be served.
Had dinner. Did dishes. Made more cinnamon rolls, now the larger variety.
Completed and filed my mother's taxes. Hope they are kinda right.
Off to bed.

Note

Last day of work before Spring Break.

This year, I am trying to actually get some house stuff done, and not just lie around all day. And, in case I don't get a workout in, I want to be able to look back and see what I did instead.

Tonight would be a free pass, but I did start things off on the right note by dismantling the hose bib and taking it in to the excellent, old fashion, hardware store and getting replacement parts. Leak solved.

I also took apart the power washer spray gun and put it back more correctly then the last time, so now it works.

Biking (Commute in) 28:19 [1] 5.78 mi (4:54 / mi) +12m 4:52 / mi
weight:172lbs shoes: Bike Sandals

On about 2 hours sleep, I felt like I was only creeping along, but it wasn't much slower then usual. Impaired enough by lack of sleep, I had to concentrate on getting around the posts at the trail heads, or risk impaling myself. I successfully missed them all.
3 PM

Biking 1:12:40 [1] 16.01 mi (4:32 / mi) +52m 4:30 / mi
shoes: Bike Sandals

Work to where the trail switches to street near Old Town, back the other way to the Humpback Bridge, and then home. Favorable wind, so I felt like I was flying at times. Weeee!!
4 PM

Biking 4:05 [2] 0.44 mi (9:17 / mi) +34m 7:29 / mi
shoes: Bike Sandals

Ride up the hill. Stood up and pumped, and it felt a little easier then recent efforts.

Beautiful, beautiful afternoon!
5 PM

Mowing/Yard (Mowing) 15:00 [0]

Mowed our lawn and then the front of the neighbors. Didn't have any desire to do the back, especially after dinner arrived. I was starving today despite an afternoon energy bar.

The lawn looks lovely!

A busy day, with a dinner guest at the end of it, so no workout today. Probably just as well since I am a little worn out and also not sleeping well, as usual.

Wacky weather, so I moved the workout indoors.

After a short warm up period, walked at 4.4 mph with 0 incline until I hit 20 minutes.

Then the following speed and incline changing every five minutes starting at 20:
20 4.4 mph 1.0 incline
25 4.4 2.0
30 4.4 3.0
35 4.4 4.0
40 4.5 3.0
45 4.6 2.0

weight:172lbs shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Behind work on the unpaved road. Tough to get through this workout today, and I didn't do what I had planned which was to run more than I did. Though I am not surprised since my legs were a little tired, it was 80+ degrees and sunny, there was 15-20 mph winds in one direction, and I was a bit low on fuel since I only had a banana for breakfast and didn't eat all of my lunch because the pork was undercooked (could have nuked it more, but I threw it away instead). Stopped four times for a drink from the water bottle I left at the side of the road, but nothing was making it easier today.

So, I ran a mile, walked .2, ran a mile, walked some more, ran up the little hill 5 times at some point (my puny attempt at hill repeats, though you have to start somewhere), and then some more until I reached 5 miles. Sweating heavily after and drank 32 oz Gatorade.

9 AM

Biking 1:47:00 [2] 20.29 mi (5:16 / mi) +114m 5:11 / mi
shoes: Shimano Bike

Goal was 20 miles. Got a later start then I could have/should have, especially since I had basically been wide awake since midnight. Almost wiped out on some sand at the bottom of the hill when I have to make a tight turn to get on the bike path. Hmm, maybe this was a sign that I shouldn't be riding today? Luckily, it was the only incident of the day.

Headed to the Mount Vernon path to ride along the Potomac River, turning around before hitting Old Town streets. Just as well that this was the plan since a road race was finishing up, and the streets were packed.

Back the other way to the Humpback Bridge. Though there is sill a 40' bottleneck where part of the new path is unfinished, the rest of the trip over the bridge is now wide enough to hold two-way traffic, so I decided to go to the DC line before turning around.

Back the way I came and staggered up the hill home, taking the hill in chunks.

Temps were in the mid 50s and cloudy, which was fine with me. However, the winds were pretty stiff in two directions, and I felt like I was just plodding along at time.

Lunch out with Roger, and then a nice nap.

4 PM

Misc (THE DVD!) 40:00 [2]

Watching the boob tube, so I figured I may as well do this at the same time. Had to modify the planks since my shoeless feet kept slipping on the carpet. Too lazy to track down shoes, to stupid to take my socks off. :)

O Training (PWNF PC 4) 1:37:00 [2] *** 5.23 mi (18:33 / mi) +163m 16:55 / mi
weight:173lbs shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Volunteered from 7-10 AM at the VHTRC BRR 50 mile trail run. For the last X years beside last year, I was the main person - 5 AM-9PM. Just too long of a day for me anymore. So, this year, I made sure the new results person was set up and then bailed out as planned during the first time the runners came through the S/F area (about 17 miles of 50 miles).

Drove to PWNF and worked on the last eight permanent control locations, including one both Greg and I had failed on previously. Saved that one to last and found it eventually. However, I was unable to find another one which had an ambiguous control location between the coordinates and what was drawn on the 1:20k 20 year old map. I may try again tomorrow, while incorporating a pass by into my trail run loop, or not. Current count is 59/60. Great project so far since it has "forced" me out of the door when I may have vegged out otherwise.

And, with my bonus time for today, I enjoyed a nap and dinner with Roger, neither of which are out of the ordinary, but still appreciated having the time to do both.

And, a Lailah update - at 2 months, she has proven to be quite precocious...she has mastered the sneer, or maybe that is the international sign of a poopie diaper.

She is still working on the whole smiling thing, though she is almost there!!

The ride home, and it was so lovely! Left work a different way to go by the post office and then dropped down to the trail along the Potomac River. Moving and feeling well, and outside on a beautiful day. I didn't even let the hill up top to the house mess with my head. It can't get much better then that.

My bike goal for the next five months is to increase my long ride by 15 miles a month. So, I am calling this one the base for April, and by the end of the month, I will have done at least one 30 miler. April 30, May 45, June 60, July 75, August 12 100.

A preplanned day off. Worked a couple hours in the yard this afternoon with Roger. It was a beautiful day in the high 70s.

Legs are a bit sore, and the top of the right shoulder has a softball size bruise on it. I remember hitting it a second time, but not the first time. I guess I was in the zone.

O Training 1:06:06 [1] *** 2.57 mi (25:43 / mi) +35m 24:41 / mi

Map with tracks

Got to the event early to sort out control units to hand off to West Point. Then I did a phone consult with my race timing backup at home. With time to waste before my start, I walked up the hill to the start and brought back two big bags of clothes.

Back up the hill for my start. While redoing my shoelaces, I dropped my epunch off my wrist. Someone pointed it out to me, and I picked it back up and put the leash back on my wrist, but I must have forgotten to tightened it.

Started well to control 1, which others had issues with, and 2 and 3 were fine enough as well. On the way to 4, I took off my gloves because my hands were warm. Went to put my epunch back on my finger and realized it was gone. Looked around where I was for a while thinking that I had dropped it while taking off my glove. However, it is more likely that I dropped it earlier going in and out the ditch or stream since I hadn't secured it to my wrist, and I couldn't feel it on my finger because of the gloves.

After kicking myself for being one of those idiots who can't keep track of their epunch, and a few tears, I headed off to complete the course anyway. Found 4, but when I was thrashing around near 5, and tears were again obscuring my vision, I abandoned the course. Headed back to 3 again, and tried to retrace my steps, but my heart was not in it and I headed back.

I thought about running around Yellow for fun, but I decided to stop while I was ahead and did something stupid, like get hurt.

With a little time to spare before leaving for the airport, I got my epunch computer fix by spelling Matthew (cedarcreek) and Dick for an hour while they went and duked it out on Yellow.

After that, I drove to the airport, uneventfully, and had a perfectly fine flight home.

I would rate the weekend a huge success! If the black and blue marks are any indication, I threw my body around the woods with abandon. I like that feeling of having energy to go almost full out and not be worrying about being fit enough to keep going.

Thanks to OCIN for a great event!

Orienteering race 2:31:48 [4] *** 8.8 km (17:15 / km) +260m 15:02 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Actual distance: 7.9 miles and climb calculated at 258 m.

Map with tracks

With the competition for the F50+ UltraLong Gold between Sandy and me, the pre-race tension in the cabin was thick. Well, not really, but it sounded good. I figured that the race for the gold was pretty even, and it was going to come down to speed vs. good route choices, as well as both of us keeping the errors in check.

I figured that a dream goal was 135, and that 2x80 (160) minute winning time was more then reasonable. With Sandy starting 20 minutes behind me, I was also hoping to finish before she did, ideally 20:01 before she did. ;)

Managed to come in under the 160 and finish before Sandy finished. However, I gave up too much time on a couple of significant errors, as well as a poor route choice to #7. Sandy had one significant error to #3, but nailed everything after that to get the victory by 9 minutes.

AP error free time would have been Valerie 2:10:47 and Sandy 2:11:17. :)

Here I am finishing strong. A big thank you to Julie Keim (furlong47) for the pictures.

After the race, there was a group of ten at the cabin for an early dinner.

Since no one reported being sick from my cooking the next day, I will declare it a success. The highlight of the evening was the toasting of the peeps.

Orienteering race 48:11 [4] *** 3.9 km (12:21 / km) +105m 10:53 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Route

Actual distance: 3.1 miles

This was one of the funnest races I have run in a long time. Of course, having lots of short legs, and some of those on the campus, was a big factor. It also helped that I didn't feel like I was dragging my butt up every hill. Another factor was that I had no obligations to do anything but compete and hang out this weekend, and I planned on making that plan stick.

The rain held off until I was finished, after threatening to start right as I was being called up.

Some of my route choices were suspect, and I have one navigational error, but all in all, it was a pleasing race.

After, it was off to Paesano's Pasta House for the second night. After dinner, we drove back to the cabin, and then back into town to try to get an internet connection. After failing to find easy parking in town, Sandy suggested the hotel on the edge of town, and we were able to score a connection in the parking lot. WooHoo! Got the files for the race sent off and some pictures uploaded. Then back to the cabin to chill and prepare for the next day.
