Note

Some new things tried this weekend - radio control, wired controls, and uploading results during the event (not really "live", but more then we have tried before in the US, as far as I know).

All worked somewhat well, though some better planning is in order for how to get things laid out, attached, etc. Radio was attached to a branch for the Middle event and it got pulled off. But, prior to this I had dropped the radio and the connection to the radio was broken. Mounting this on something sturdier is required (and not dropping the electronics is a good idea as well).

"Live" results was nice, but it required a manual step or three, and unless Vadim did it, it wasn't happening, since I just couldn't concentrate on anything additional.

With Sandy doing the course setting, I had a walk-up replacement wingman this weekend - Lyn A - who sat down at the computers, never seeing OE2010 (or even OE2003) before, and with a little direction and oversight, mastered the basics, and even a high risk maneuver at the end. She wasn't competing, so she dedicated herself to the Download/Results, and I couldn't have done as easily it without her.

Note

My twin sister (I'm 4 minutes older - always an important fact), Elizabeth (birth) aka Betsy (childhood) aka Cris (adult), lives in Allentown with her partner, Ellen (who I haven't yet met, though they have been together 2? years. I think she only goes by the one name.).

Good picture - except for my misplaced "nipple" (necklace), and the fact that my head looks bigger (extra brains?!). Sibling rivalry Forever! We look more alike now then we ever have before.

I am not very good at reaching out - out of sight, out of mind, which is why I haven't met Ellen. Staying in contact with family is something I need to work on, so I contacted Betsy (can't get around the Cris name), and invited her and Ellen to lunch on Friday on my way through Allentown. They weren't available, but they would come on Saturday to the meet. It turned out that just Betsy was able to come. And, though things were a bit crazed, it was a nice visit. Huge bonus points to my sister for bringing food (ate the rest of it on the way home on Sunday), diet coke (like a 30 oz bottle), and letting me order her around to help put the cable for the cabled control out. And, she didn't leave while I ran off and left her to do a Sprint course. Cool.

Recently, an 89 year old woman who we have had to Christmas eve dinner the last two years was hit and killed by a school bus. And, with other people facing family mortality issues, I am trying to think about my family more often, and that fact that at any given time someone can be "run over by a bus." Not dwelling, just trying to be a little less self-centered.

Note

Well, crap, I wrote a whole diatribe about clubs skimping on port-a-johns. It disappeared. All that wisdom wasted. Bummer. Bottom line - double your estimate. Your participants will appreciate it.

Second thing to deal with - if you want me in November 20xx, I need a date, or a the possible two week spread.

Orienteering race 40:00 [2] 3.5 km (11:26 / km) +75m 10:19 / km

Yup, all I thought I could mentally handle today, and mangling #1 proved it. Got me a scalp though. ;)

Note

So sore from this weekend.

Event: Hickory Run

Note

OK, so, there is a certain (read: a great amount) of angst involved with doing results for an A-meet, be it pin punch or electronic timing. Did I get it right? Was it me screwing up, or was it the controls malfunctioning? Do I know "jack"?

Lots of self-doubt.

And, then, most often, it is not me but them...

Two cases today (apologies, if I offend either of the unnamed subjects):

1. Person downloads (perhaps the 100th person for the day, no issues mentioned up to this point). States their watch says they were 8 minutes faster then what is printed on their results sheet. I look at their split times for first and last split, and nothing seems out of whack. Perhaps they accidentally stopped their watch at some point?! They are very doubtful, because how could that be?!

2. Person downloads. Time is x minutes faster then he could possibly be based on how his fitness level and how his peers finished. They are very doubtful, because how could that be?! Seriously, you did good, take it and run!!

Give me #2 any day. :)
