Mowing/Yard 10:00 [1]

I didn't want my log to be totally naked the last three says, so I am putting the mowing down since pushing the sucker around through the very tall grass works up a sweat.

Note
slept:9.0

Slept well last night. Well, more like, I passed out before 10 last night.
Plan was to run this evening, but I got sidetracked by laundry, cleaning out my meet bag, etc. Supposed to mow tomorrow after work, so I may be going into WP with really fresh legs.

Trail Run (Rocky Gap) 58:55 [3] 4.8 mi (12:16 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

Same trail as yesterday, but in reverse, but I got off trail a little and did a some back and forth trail to get to where I needed to go.

Ran before race timing duties. Crisp, cool morning - perfect for running.

Timing duties went well, except for the team who lost their epunch, and the two teams who went home early and didn't hand their epunch in first. Aghhhh!!

Trail Run (RG State Park) 57:45 [3] ** 4.7 mi (12:17 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

Race Timing RG Day 1

Working two events back-to-back at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, MD. Since I have never left the start/finish area during my previous three trips here, I did some research beforehand, and scoped out the trail which runs around the lake. After everyone was accounted for, and I had picked up my area, I headed out. Very warm, but I promised myself another (more on that later) swim in the lake to cool off afterwards.

The trail is pine needle covered single track interspersed with some more root covered areas. Very nice. I would do it again. Actually, the plan is to get up and do it before the race tomorrow, but in the opposite order.

O Training (Control pickup) 7:30 [3] ** 0.2 mi (37:29 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

This is the time off trail to climb up a big hill and retrieve a control. Woods actually quite nice.

Now, about my first swim of the day...one of the rafts was floating out into the lake, and the other woman didn't want to get wet going after it. So, I went tearing down the hill, taking my shoes & socks off, and carefully emptying my pockets of cell phone and keys, and I dived in, showing off a bit. I sure wished that I had taken off my $400+ glasses. Luckily, I had my O bag with the contacts in it that I never wear, so I least I can drive home. Oh, but the lake water felt great!!

Or, in my case, I needed to see to be able to drive to a hotel. The staff chalet was overstuffed with wall-to-wall women in my designated bedroom, and in the outer rooms as well. I would have not been able to get to the bathroom without stepping on people. I tried to leave without too much fuss, but my car was blocked in by two other cars, and I would have had to back down a very long hill, and I can't backup very well at all. So, I had a meltdown...feeling trapped, silly, and vulnerable, I started sobbing. Cars were moved in record time, and I am now in a Cumberland. A train is going as I write this, but for tonight, I love trains! Have to say that I don't look forward to seeing these people again tomorrow.

Running (Four Mile Run Trail) 41:30 [3] 3.9 mi (10:39 / mi)
weight:181.3lbs shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Doctor's appointment today. BP is under control, and got my Advair increased to 250/50.

Kris dropped off the epunch equipment, and we went for a run. I was breathing pretty hard, so I had to walk some of this running part. Out to Glen Carlyn bathroom building (2010 for 1.9), and then we walked, then ran back (2120 for 2.0), and then walked up to the house.

Walking 16:10 [1] 1.1 mi (14:42 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Walked .6 mile (940) before turning around, and the .5 mile walk to the house (630).

Running 26:00 [2] 2.4 mi (10:50 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

Laid around after work eating stupid food - small box of Frosted Flakes, small bag of potato chips, 10 chocolate covered vanilla butter cream eggs. This is what I resort to when left to my own devices for too long...

Finished my airplane book. I read it all the way through without reading the ending before I got there. Who wants it next?

Anyway, I finally forced myself out of the door around 7:30, and stretched my legs. Not blazing pace, and my knees are a little sore, but it was nice to be out. Lots of people with dogs on the bike trail to Shirlington. I had to dodge some long leases, but I came out of it unscathed.

Walking 16:40 [1] 1.1 mi (15:09 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

Back home afterwards.

Orienteering race (Relay Orange) 32:35 [3] *** 3.1 km (10:31 / km)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

US Relay Championships - 12 point team with Max, Kathleen, and Greg L. I was the lead off. I prefer to lead off because I can't stand waiting around to go out, but I don't usually do well under the pressure. So this was the perfect team for me - I was definitely the Orange leg person, and we had low expectations.

Setup was great - you could view everyone going to their first three controls as they criss crossed a rolling field. My line was off and I visited the incorrect 1st control - there were lots of them out there. Got out of full view cleanly after doing 2 & 3, and then fumbled 4 and blew 5. After that, I settled in for the remaining 10 controls being careful to know what I needed to do when coming back into the spectator area. I can't take the pressure!!

Loads of fun. Well, run meet - great infrastructure, plenty of food & drinks, announcing, festive finish chute.

O Training (Shadow Max) 26:00 [2] 1.75 mi (14:52 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

Tagged off to Max (11 years old sometime this year), got a drink handed to me, then followed after him while he did the Yellow leg. All of the extra controls around the field called his name, and I didn't think I was going to be up to the task if he didn't settle in. Got 1 & 2 after visiting 6-8 controls in the area, and then he nailed the rest.

Weird being out there without a map. I wanted to keep grabbing his to see where I was, but I only did it once.

Our team finished as the 4th eligible team. It looks like Kathleen had the 2nd best Brown leg. Greg passed one team, only to be passed back right near the end by that team, and by Glen T who has had some smokin' times this spring.

O Training (Control pickup) 30:00 [2] *** 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

My flight out is tomorrow morning, so I stayed and picked up 5 controls in an area I had not been to earlier. This was my worst effort of the weekend, and I fretted that I was holding people up who were waiting for the controls, but I wasn't the last one in...whew!

Took a poor, very steep route choice to the first control. Found 1, 2, and apparently 4 which was close to 3. Thinking I was at 3, I looked for 4, but I couldn't find it. So, I headed to 5, and left the stands there, and went back to 4, but I couldn't find it - because I had already picked it up. Went back to 5 to start again, and I finally realized my problem. Back to 3, and back to 5, and home. This was a very hilly area, so I was feeling it when I was done.

Orienteering race (ROC Letchworth Green Y) 44:44 [3] *** 3.38 km (13:14 / km) +100m 11:32 / km
shoes: Icebugs Sky Blue

US Middle Championships at Letchworth State Park, Portageville, NY. Warmer weather than what was expected for this time of year, but it didn't really bother me.

Pleased with the run, except for the last two controls. Not huge errors, but enough fumbling around to lose 2-3 minutes. Glad that I modeled earlier.

2nd overall in F50+, a couple of minutes behind Olga R, and a little less than two minutes in front of Sandy.

Orienteering race (Sprint 2) 17:38 [3] *** 2.0 km (8:49 / km)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

Afternoon sprint race, by which time it was ~80F. I wisely signed up for the 2nd start time, so it was better for me than for some others who started later.

Hoped for under 10 per km, but it was a struggle to keep pushing at times. Another pretty clean run except for briefly visiting another control nearby my control in front of an audience. I shook if off and finished strongly.

Orienteering (Model) 20:00 [2] *** 1.2 km (16:40 / km)
shoes: Salomom XT Wings 10

Walked the model with Sandy. Glad I got out to see what this technical area looked like.

Note

J-J gifted me some Peeps today - green chicks. They are deformed with their eyes being on their butts. Thanks, J-J!!

Running/Walking (Four Mile Run Trail) 43:43 intensity: (9:09 @1) + (34:34 @3) 3.7 mi (11:49 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

OK, so Kris is waiting for me to post so she can copy and paste my write-up into her log. If I was creative, I would put all kinds of outrageous stuff in here, so she would have to wade through it and delete the crazy stuff, but I am brain dead, so it is not to be.

Plan was to hand off epunch equipment to Kris around 7 PM, and get a run in while I was waiting for her to finish up at work.
I got side tracked with many other things, including recycling 3 months of paper and talking to Roger on Skype, so I called Kris and determined that I could twist her arm into running with me. We headed out a little before 7 PM.

Walked down the steep hill behind the house, and turned left on the Four Mile Run trail (no time). Trail is all paved, but hillier than the parallel, but similarly paved W&OD. Ran to the Glen Carlyn bathrooms (1804) and then walked to the 2.5 mile mark on the W&OD, just a little after the two trails merged, and then turned around (249). Ran (mostly) back to an alternate hill behind the house (1630), and then walked the rest of the way home through the elementary school grounds (617). Breakdown is 3434 for 3.15 miles running & 909 for .55 walking.

Another beautiful evening, with lots of people on the trails. Very nice to have company, and I hope Kris' knee (and my knee) isn't too cranky with paved miles. Excellent company as well. Thanks Kris!

Trail Run (Burke Lake) 48:30 [3] 4.5 mi (10:47 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Took Roger to Dulles for his trip to Italy. Decided last night that Burke Lake was the most reasonable choice for a run afterwards, and I followed through. Lovely late afternoon with cool temps - warm enough for shorts and short sleeve, but comfortable to run in.

It has been a while since I have done this run, and I still like it. Too bad it isn't closer to home. Lots of people out on foot or on bike, with the speedier runners closer to the time I was leaving.

I walked a couple little sections, and I didn't feel all that great running. Mostly it hurt to breathe deeply. I guess I have to get that figured out. Maybe an increased dosage of Advair for the springtime months is in order. Time wasn't as bad as I felt it would be, so I am not complaining. A couple of the half mile markers I saw: 520, 508, 508, 1040 (mile).

Walking (Burke Lake) 1:10:00 [2] 4.9 mi (14:17 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Decided that I would celebrate being a "free woman" by going around again, but there was no way I could run it. So, I walked it as fast as I could with a little thrown in at the beginning and at the end. The mile splits were 1400 1347 1332 1340. The 1332 was because I wanted to catch some ladies walking ahead of me, and I did. :)

Trail Run (Wakefield/Lake Accotink) 1:19:00 [3] 6.8 mi (11:37 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs Men's Blue 8.5

Timing duties went quickly today -only a 5/10 mile trail race on a faster course than some of the other venues, so it was all wrapped up in 2 hours. Couldn't pass up running on a cooler afternoon, came prepared, and got a run in.

Only shoes in the car were the Icebugs, which were a bit of overkill for these trails, especially since I decided to do the packed, and sometimes paved, Wakefield to Lake Accotink loop, but they did the trick. Ideally, I would have run some of the Wakefield trails, but that would have required too much mental energy, so if was off to run around the lake instead.

Left hip a little tight from sitting so much this weekend, mostly on an incline.

Said I would be home at 2 PM, and I drove up at 1:59 only to find Roger in the front yard, and the extension cord plugged in. Oh, crap! I said I would mow the lawn when I got home if it was dry enough, and it was. So, I knocked that out, and it looks lovely. :)

Note

Oh, I forgot...a fairly large red fox, with a very bushy tail, crossed my path on the section between Wakefield and Lake Accotink, as you approach the underpass for the Beltway. Very cool sighting.

Trail Run (Hemlock Overlook) 1:04:00 [3] 4.8 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs - Red Storm

Timing the Bull Run Run 50 miler. Made the plan ahead of time to run between duties, and followed through despite the warm, humid conditions. Yeah! Thought I would do 2 hours, but 1 was quite enough, thank you very much!
Like Kris said, it was difficult to go from 0-60 in 9 seconds, or something like that.
Long day, with another (shorter) event to time tomorrow. I hope to run after that one, and the conditions should be cooler. So, follow through is key to the day.

Running/Walking (Neighborhood & bike trail) 1:00:00 [2] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)
weight:182lbs shoes: New Balance 1223

More of a struggle tonight with the warmer weather (78F) and spring having sprung. Wheezing and pooped legs. So, I ran a bit and then walked, and then tried to run some more, and then walked the rest. All together, it was about 2 miles running and 3 walking.

Very happy to have gotten out a second day in a row after napping after work.

Dumb move - wore only one pair of socks and got a blister on the side of my right heel in the usual place I get blisters if I only wear one pair of socks. I must stick with the combination which works - two pairs.

Running (Neighborhood & bike trail) 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
weight:184lbs shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Felt decent. 68F at 5:15 PM. Lots of sports practice & games at the high school. Ran through the park - kept my eyes and ears open. Lots of people out.

Walking (Reverse route) 27:30 [2] 2.0 mi (13:45 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Walked the same route back home instead of completing the circle like I usually do. Pushed as hard as I could.

Note
weight:182lbs

Weight is down, probably just temporary, but I'll take it.

Body held up well this weekend. No real pains, just aches.

Orienteering race (Flying Pig Long) 2:51:21 [4] *** 7.8 km (21:58 / km) +320m 18:14 / km
shoes: Ice Bugs Men's Blue 8.5

Slow but (fairly) clean until I got near #2 the second time (my route choice on the long leg to #10), then I lost my mind, and ~35 minutes lost the rest of the way to #10 & from 10-11 when I finally relocated from a distance campground loop.

The mud, as evidenced on my clothes, was very Pig worthy today.

Fun weekend!

Tracks - Looking at this, I realize that I had forgotten about going the little side trip between 2 & 3. Though I was quite proud of myself for stopping and sorting myself out when I did.

From 9-10, things go fine enough until I get back to #2, and then I executed a nice "loop de loop." Though 10-11 was actually worse, and very disheartening, but I finally realized that I hadn't hit the creek, and headed that way, and then up to the campground was necessary to relocate...

Tracks say I did about 8 miles.

Orienteering race (Flying Pig Sprint 1) 21:00 [5] *** 2.3 km (9:08 / km)
shoes: Saucony Blue 4

Again, I wasn't watching the starters ahead of me, even though their route was visible to me, and I felt somewhat foolish when my compass said to go left, but left was across the road. Settled in after that, though lost steam at the end. Lots of fun.

Orienteering race (Flying Pig Sprint 2) 21:15 [4] *** 2.1 km (10:07 / km)
shoes: Saucony Blue 4

A beautiful day, though somewhat muddy, but that was kind of fun. No real errors. Finally beat the woman who has started ahead of me the last two events. Third US eligible in F50 and 4th overall (12 seconds behind 3rd overall, and 5-6 minutes behind 1st and 2nd).

Got to fiddle with some epunching, but it was nice to walk off without a care in the world. :)

Nice dinner with Tom and Lisa.

O Training (Flying Pig Model) 26:00 [2] *** 1.6 km (16:15 / km)
shoes: Ice Bugs - Red Storm

Light rain, plenty muddy. Green but NO thorns!

Trail Run (To Middle Start) 19:00 [2] 1.2 mi (15:50 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs - Red Storm

Weird getting ready for this event since I had SO much time with nothing to do but to get ready. ~.75 miles along a busy road - got tooted at by a semi-truck driver whereas the cadets ahead of me did not. :)

Orienteering race (Flying Pig Middle) 44:51 [4] *** 3.7 km (12:07 / km) +120m 10:26 / km
shoes: Ice Bugs - Red Storm

Almost a perfect race for me with 1 minute lost securing an epunch to a stand that the adapter had broken on. It was in the mud. After trying to untie the very securely tied bag in order to use the end of the string, I settled on my clue sheet holder. Hopefully, I will get it back.

Another minute or so at another control, but mostly I was just running out of steam. My performance index went from 115 down to 57% during the course of the race.

I didn't fall into the mud, but I was muddy for sure.

Dumb injury of the day - after coming off of the course unscathed, I was getting into my car tonight and banged below my knee on the shin bone on the dashboard. I was doing some swearing.

Last week I had terrible pain in my left toe for several hours. So painful I couldn't put weight on it, and then it just disappeared. And today I noticed that the same toe on the other foot is going to lose a toenail. Not sure if a 10 mile trail run followed by 10 more miles of orienteering a couple of weeks ago is worthy of losing a toe, but it has to be from that.

Finally, the OCIN Epunch team allowed me some computer time, so I didn't have to go cold turkey.
