Chest is less congested. Started back on prescription nasal spray on Monday. Had stopped it several months ago thinking I didn't need it, but I believe I was mistaken...

Running 29:00 [3] 3.0 mi (9:40 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:182lbs shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 1

Running part of BC - to Walter Reed, Dinwiddie, to high school. Struggled up the Dinwiddie hill - breathing hurt. Did some pushups, burpees and other stuff a couple of times on the way to the high school so I was able to catch up then. Then a couple of sprints and some squats before the return trip.
The group was going back the shorter way, but I was finally feeling warmed up, so I went back the same way we came. I tried to concentrate on relaxing my shoulders and my left arm. I think I may need to stop carrying the hand bottle, which I do just about all the time.
Felt really good running back.

Misc 30:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 1

Warm up jog, stretching, jj, pushups, Burpees, wall sits, 50 leg lifts, etc.

Head and chest congested, so I slept in instead of BC.

Running race (Symphony of Lights 5K) 28:07 [4] 5.0 km (5:37 / km)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

Late afternoon race in Clinton, Iowa through the Christmas lights display. Joined Darcy & Ted Good for the second year. Another beautiful day in the mid 50s (I think).

I thought I may have another good race in me this year, but after Thursday's run, I had lowered my expectations. This was a lot tougher this year - in part due to a heavy chest. Staying with a dog all week, and then too many second hand cigarettes sucked in at lunch today in the smoking section...

The course was much hillier than I remembered too - funny how when you feel like you are flying, like I did last year, nothing seems so tough?!

Ted finished fast enough to cheer Darcy and I on after finishing 8th overall (correction 6th) and 1st M40-44. Yeah, Ted!!

He commented that I hold my left arm pressed into my side. Roger took a picture from behind on Thursday, and I noticed the same thing. I am not sure if it is because I was having problems breathing, or what. I'll have to work on this...

The company was excellent, and Darcy's folks fed me afterwards. Thank you!!

Running race (Turkey Trot 5 Miler) 45:18 [4] 5.0 mi (9:04 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

A race PR, but not a distance PR, but that's okay. Possibly too many miles earlier in the week, or too much wine last night. :)

Results based on chip timing, so I held back and passed the start line after everyone had passed. Then I had to weave my way through the dogs, strollers, and walkers. Figured this would keep me from going out too fast. Ran the entire race. Breathing ragged at the end, and I couldn't push it in any faster. Not disappointed - I did the best I could today.

Beautiful weather this year - low 40s and no wind to speak of.

Running 23:00 [3] 2.3 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

Back to the house after a massage. Calves pretty tight from yesterday. We'll work on loosening them up some more tomorrow.

Walking 9:15 [1] 0.6 mi (15:25 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

Walked the rest of the way home...

Running (Chicago - Elk Grove Villa) 39:03 [3] 4.1 mi (9:31 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

In Chicago - managed to get in a haircut and a run - in between eating and sitting on my butt. Beautiful day in the mid-40s with no wind at around 4 PM when I headed out the door. An all sidewalk run - ugh, but I was very happy to stretch my legs. A little sore (the good kind) from yesterday.

Running (Iowa Duck Creek Trail) 1:36:45 [3] 10.0 mi (9:41 / mi)
shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

In Iowa for Thanksgiving week...beautiful day in the high 30s with some wind at times, but not terribly so. Out to the Duck Creek golf course, to the top of at the hill at Marlo St. Back past the Running Wild store, and then back to the house.

Felt mostly good throughout - fresh legs are a help. GU at ~40 minutes. Walked about 1 minute of each mile. Breathing harsh at the end - possibly feeling the effects of smoking at the resturant last night (not me, the patrons at the bar).

Slept very poorly last night. Thanksgiving lunch at work today. So, like Tim, I will declare this the start of the holiday season. I am 3-4 pounds higher than last year at this time...

Well, I bailed on boot camp this morning - still feeling really wiped out from this weekend. But I did push the heavy leaf vacuum around the yard for an hour this evening, so it wasn't a total slacker day.

Running 13:00 [2] 1.2 mi (10:50 / mi)
shoes: Poison Ice Bugs

Since warming up yesterday felt so good, I turned down a ride from the finish to the start and ran up the road (the only uphill all weekend).

Orienteering race (Pakim Pond) 52:41 [4] *** 4.87 km (10:49 / km) +43m 10:22 / km
slept:3.0 shoes: Poison Ice Bugs

We got the epunch download area set up near the finish, and then I headed to the start. Today, I got there barely in time for my start, though I wasn't sure what that actually was. Thanks, Cristina, for helping me out with that... Tied my shoes up real tight and then realized that I hadn't laced them through my gaiters. Got the triple knots untied, and got to the line in ebone time - no time to spare.
Course went mostly okay, except for going back to #1 on the way to #6. Now, this wouldn't have been a bad route choice if I had intented to go that way, but I thought I was on another trail 250 meters to the south.
Rain held off while I was out there (thank you!). Worked the epunch afterwards. Excellent weekend! Thanks to everyone for all their hard work.

The best part? The results were posted before I got home. Sandy - thanks!!

Event: BATONA 500

Trail Run 8:00 [2] 0.75 mi (10:40 / mi)
shoes: Poison Ice Bugs

Warmed up running to the start. Got there early for my pre-start. Caught my breath, had some water, and then got out of there...

Orienteering race (Batona 500 Batsto) 1:16:13 [4] 5.35 km (14:15 / km) +80m 13:15 / km
shoes: Poison Ice Bugs

I got to the start with time to spare. Actually getting warmed up for a change was very good - my breathing wasn't my main focus as I started. Took time to get my thoughts together and then started about 20 minutes earlier then my pre-start time.

It was a "feast or famine" kind of day - I had the top split (or near the top for my class) or the bottom most one. But it was a beautiful day in the woods. No complaints.

Worked epunching afterwards, including overseeing the 2 sprints, at the same time that the A meet was still going on. Couldn't have done it without Sandy - we make quite a team! Assistants were Robin (in training), Nancy, Graham, and Tanner - or was it Tanner and Graham? :)

Note
(rest day)

I planned to run 3 miles these evening after work. But I got shooting pains through my left knee as I leaving work - very painful. Decided to pass on the run. And it was such a lovely evening - really, it was!

Note
(rest day)

Flu shot - damn my arm is sore! The nurse was impressed with my big muscle.

And I am over feeling sorry for myself. :)

Misc 1:00:00 [3] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
slept:5.0 shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

Still coughing after this session. Warmed up with .5 mile jog, stretching, jj. Then off for a 1/4 mile run with sprinting - umm, 1/4 run is sprinting, isn't it? Anyway, it was more like 1.25 miles and we would sprint in and out of the parking lots.

Then we had to sprint back and forth like 8, 10, and 8 times with jumping rope in between. Not enough ropes, so I did jumping jacks instead for 1, 1.5, and 2 minutes. We finished off with calf raises.
Good, hard, session. Did I mention that I am still coughing? :)

Note
slept:7.0 weight:180lbs (rest day)

The race timing was a bit stressful at times today because of the large, clumped up field in the 5 miler. But we made it through okay, and it wasn't too cold either.
Sarah finished in 1:02:07.

Trail Run (Wakefield Park) 1:06:00 [3] * 5.75 mi (11:29 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:180lbs shoes: Saucony Omni Trail

Working a race at this park tomorrow, and Sarah is running the 5 miler (actually 5.5 miles), so I thought I would run the course today. Got messed up a few times, and added some distance. Beautiful crisp morning in the low 30s. Overdressed in 3 layers - shed two of them when I went by the car after 1 mile.

Trails in excellent shape.

Running (Caboose & back) 52:47 [3] 5.2 mi (10:09 / mi)
slept:4.0 weight:180lbs shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

Woke up 20 minutes before class - quickly dressed, had a banana, a couple of hits on the inhaler, and out the door. Was going to be ticked off if I got there and the planned long run didn't materialize, but they got it right today. Some stretching, 80 jj, 15 Burpees, and off for a run. Asked if Debbie was going to go with the 1/2 group so I would have someone to run with, and she was.

Started out too fast and breathing hurt, but settled in after a short walk break at about 14 minutes. Took the Four Mile Run part of the trail to Glen Carlin, then up to the W&OD out to the caboose and back. Easier coming back because the wind was behind us then and it stayed there.

Misc 1:00:00 [2]
slept:5.0 weight:180lbs shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 2

Maybe I should make my intensity level relative to how soaked my clothes are afterwards. Today, we barely broke a sweat, though we did work our arms quite a bit with the bands. Rowing, punching, shoulder presses, lots of bicep curls. A little running and a little ab work.

Wednesday Nov 1, 2006 #

Misc 1:00:00 [3]
slept:6.0 weight:179lbs shoes: Saucony - Big Blue 1

Good session with decent amount of ab work - v sits, leg lifts, flutter kicks, crunches. Before that, it was some walking lunges, pushups, jj, Burpees, wall sits, sprinting, lots of squat pulses.

I was feeling sore after dinner last night, so I took 3 Aleve around 8 PM. This seems to work well for the morning sessions.
