Event: West Point

Orienteering race (West Point Brown 1) 1:42:00 [3] *** 4.65 mi (21:56 / mi)
ahr:139 shoes: Silva K80 2

Didn't really feel fit enough for a West Point Green, so had downgraded to Brown a week or so ago. Looked forward to the shortish 3.3 km on Day 1.

Should have paid much more attention to the course notes - especially the fact that the N/S lines were printed at an angle. I stumbled onto 1 becasue I was contouring. But then really hosed 2 including visiting a lake off of the map. I contemplated going back through the finish to sort myself out, but could not bear to do that...I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my mind.

About 45 minutes in, after several trips up and down the road, I finally figure out why my compass doesn't match the map in the normal fashion of top = North. I am kicking myself - why didn't this come to me sooner?! Finally make forward progress and find 2. Fumble on 3 with many others, and then spy it. Make a poor decision of going down a 8 foot wall instead of around it. Dislodge a big rock and it hits my butt and I bang my knee. It stuns me - Lynette Walker asks if I need help. I tell her to go on and decide to walk it in. Very grateful in retrospect that I have lots of padding on my rear end.

A day later, it is very painful to run, so I didn't attempt Day 2...

Note

Drive to NY today and into the City tomorrow - pay back time for my hubby who supports, but does not do, orienteering. Thank you Roger.

Got the lawn mowed before the rain moves in and we leave for NY on Thursday.

Orienteering race (Valley Forge Red - DVOA) 1:28:00 [2] *** 6.8 km (12:56 / km) +260m 10:52 / km
ahr:150 spiked:17/21c shoes: Silva K80 1

Well, one day of togetherness at home was quite enough. :) So, I got up early and went to the DVOA meet at Mount Joy/Valley Forge, PA. Very enjoyable. Unlike many Valley Forge meets, this one was mostly in the woods - criss crossing all over the small area - doable with epunching. Helped out a little afterwards since I didn't really want to head right home after only being there 2 hours.

Running (To work & back) 42:00 [1] 3.2 mi (13:07 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

This is Roger's weekend - I have nothing on the agenda so I "owe" some hours at home. Wake up call comes at 8:30 am to help move some plants in the garden. Then lunch with friends, a nap, and help a cadet re: A meet, and work on Sprint course for PG.

Then I read Peggy D's workout from yesterday and realize I haven't even thought about whether I was going to blow off a run today or not. And the next thing I know I am out the door going to work to pick up the master maps from Pax River so I can make the courses to send to Greg for RouteGadget...

Anyway, walk most of the way there in 24 minutes - breathing rough for 1st 20 minutes as usual and it is all uphill. Pick stuff up and head back home. Sky opens up 4 blocks from home - as I am trudging up the hill. Return trip in 18 minutes.

I got a workout in and didn't even spend all day agonizing about it! Follow up with dinner out. What a rough day.

Omeet: Print maps, setup sprint & QOC event, 3 hours.

Trail Run (Lake Accotink) 58:00 [2] 6.0 km (9:40 / km)
weight:191lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Had an afternoon appointment in Springfield so took my running clothes so I could go for a run around the lake. Before leaving work, decided to print the Lake Accotink O map and run trails instead.

Upon leaving my appt, I came to the T at Edsall road - left to home, right to the lake. I don't really feel like running, so I get into the left lane first, then chastise myself for being lazy and get into right lane.

Change at the park and into the shoes I threw into the bag - turns out I had grabbed a pair that did not have insoles in them, so I had to use the ortho inserts instead - not ideal because they are slippery. Also, I can tell that my hubby washed my water bottle last - it was soapy tasting. Temps in the 80s, sluggish thoughout. So, plenty of negatives things to worry about, but enjoyed being by myself instead of on the main trail...

Situps 30, pushups 20

Running (Neighborhood) 30:00 [2] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

Only goal was to get out the door - walk or run or both. Set an easy pace and only walked 2 minutes and up the hill home - which I decided to do 3 times. WP is coming up soon! Breathing a little painful but not really an issue.

30 situps and 20 girlie pushups after...

Orienteering race (Pax River - Jug Bay) 1:20:44 [2] 5.6 km (14:25 / km) +170m 12:31 / km
shoes: Silva K80 2

Actual covered was 4.3 miles. Started the day by visiting the site of a 5/10 mile trail run. Sandy F pitched right in and entered the majority of the race day entries. Then headed to the O meet. Set up quickly and left the epunch duties in Sandy's capable hands.

Happy with my effort considering I feel really out of shape. Only minor errors - and was suckered into looking at two controls left out from a meet last weekend. Very good day!

Trail Race: Finish line support, 1 hour.
O Meet: Epunching, 5 hours.

Biking (C&O canal towpath) 2:00:00 [2] 21.0 mi (5:43 / mi)

Dropped off the electronic controls at Nadim & Peggy's in Bethesda. Took Nadim's suggestion and parked at Carderock - never been there before. Made more sense than driving all the way into Great Falls. After asking some guys how I got to the canal from the parking lot, I was off. Out to the 21 mile mark and back. Had to carry/roll bike up and down stairs for a towpath detour. Wasn't as hard to do as I thought.

I dressed properly for the cool morning. I had to concentrate most of the time becasue of the slightly lose gravel. I didn't want to fall into the canal - klutz that I am, it was close a couple of times.

Butt was telling me that this was too far without more practice, but I hung in there. Glad to have gotten a ride in on this beautiful day. Now I am waiting for Sandy F to arrive - spending the night and off to the O meet at Pax River tomorrow.

OMeet: Program and deliver controls, 1 hour.

Biking (W&OD bike trail) 1:05:00 [2] 12.2 mi (5:20 / mi)

Out and back on the bike. Hard work the first time out since December. The wind at my back helped a lot on the ride home. Mile splits: 458 512 640 w/ stop 519 506 418 358 408 503 515 725 big hill home - had to stop at one point. Enjoyed myself very much - good day. And I got my taxes sent off yesterday. - waiting for the confirmation.

Biking 20:00 [1] 3.0 mi (6:40 / mi)

Fiddled around with getting air in the tires and getting the seat adjusted correctly. Blew most of the hour I had to spare doing that...Then just rode around the neighborhood before heading to Bethesda for dinner and a Dahlia sale at the library.

Orienteering race (Pohick Bay) 1:19:34 [3] *** 5.3 km (15:01 / km) +186m 12:46 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Silva K80 1

Worked a 50 mile race yesterday. Bathroom at top of steep hill. After several trips up and down, I realized my knee didn't hurt! So, decided to give the meet a try today. Beautiful day - in low 60s when I started. Didn't try to run too much. Messed up the first control - 1.5 minute error, and a later one for about 3 minutes. Otherwise, I walked and jogged steady. Finished 2nd overall to a woman from overseas, so, I'll take it. Knee still doesn't hurt tonight. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
