Note

I can take a deep breath today without pain, and I even planned on doing the core workout. But after a nap, that wasn't going to happen. So, now, I'll just finish the week "tapering" for the half marathon on Sunday, which I probably shouldn't do, but I probably will do.

Monday Feb 25, 2008 #

Note

I have a cold, I guess. Made it home easily enough, and my luggage was actually on the flight ahead of me.

Not too excited to go out in the heat of the day, but I am glad I did. A good effort.

Walking (Trail O) 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 km (20:00 / km)

Hiked around the Trail-O, mostly with Sandy on very sandy footing.

Misc (THE DVD) 40:00 [2]

The day got away from me between having to go into work for a short period after all, then another stop to print some master maps for QOC meet on Sunday, followed by the recycle center (been driving a car load around since Saturday). I still need to go pick up a prescription for fresh inhalers to take with me.

So, I skipped the planned run.

For the first time in about 8 years, my blood pressure is consistently high. I was on medication from my late teens until my early 40s with a break in there for a couple of years in my mid 20s. Today's reading was 148/94.

Trail Run (Prince William Forest Prk) 1:32:00 [3] 7.0 mi (13:09 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs Men's Blue 8.5

Back to PW to mark an OOB area for Keg's meet next Sunday.
Temps in low 60s!! All trail, so shorts and short sleeves. Parked at Lot F, ran ~1.5 miles to the OOB, then the long way around on trails and fire road back to the car.

O Training (Prince William Forest Prk) 2:20:00 [3] *** 7.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs Men's Blue 8.5

Set out controls for Keg's meet next Sunday.
Beautiful day.
Moved well.
Navigated generally well, and when I didn't, they weren't huge mistakes.
Feeling more positive today, and I hope my O confidence will rebound in '08.

Oh, and, I saw a beaver crossing the road into the woods near the entrance kiosk as I was leaving. It waddled pretty fast, just like me.

weight:187lbs

Ended up piddling the day away at home after deciding that it was worthwhile to stay home and have the house to myself. Meant to DVD, but before I knew it, it was time to drive to Baltimore to have dinner with my mother. Some usual pre-trip theatrics, but otherwise it went well.

Walking 38:39 [1] 2.8 mi (13:48 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

Around the neighborhood. Temps low 40s. No gloves, so my hands were freezing especially in the down by my side position. They were also swollen when I was done.

Running (Wakefield HS Track) 32:40 [3] 3.3 mi (9:54 / mi)
weight:188lbs shoes: New Balance 1223

With Wednesday's workout completed, and just a day late :), I grabbed a pair of gloves and headed down to the track. Plan was to run 3 miles in ~230 per lap. I was surprised that the track was deserted - no teams practicing, no one at all. I had run 9 laps when the county worker pulled up, and though it wasn't dark, I was thinking he was locking up for the night. And, I wouldn't have minded stopping a few laps early. But, he was there to turn the lights on, so I kept on going.

311 (.31 mile from the house) & 400 meter laps in

Walking warm up/down (Back home) 5:10 [1] 0.31 mi (16:40 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

Done. Another good day. Yeah!!

Misc (THE DVD) 40:00 [2]
weight:189lbs

Did this first tonight. So, now Monday's workout is done. It is getting easier again, though my ailing arms just can't handle the rolling planks, so I do a stationary plank for that exercise. Everything else is possible.

Walking warm up/down (Treadmill) 7:00 [1] 0.4 mi (17:30 / mi)
weight:189lbs shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Running (Treadmill) 33:00 intensity: (23:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) 3.0 mi (11:00 / mi)
weight:189lbs shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

One mile at 12, 11, & 10 minute pace. Breathing felt good, in part to starting slowly enough, and also for getting warmed up doing the core stuff first.

Good day. Now I am only one exercise behind for the week's plan, but tomorrow I'll be two, but that is better than three. :)

Tuesday Feb 12, 2008 #

Note

Another evening with unanticipated dinner plans, and no desire to get up early to workout.

Monday Feb 11, 2008 #

Note

No core tonight after all due to a visitor I had forgotten about.

Some mixed progress on the "Valerie is a doormat" front. I had a follow up with the orthopedic guy today about my hands. Appt time is 3:50, though I was originally told 3:40. At 4:20, a guy comes out and announces that the doctor is behind. The 3:10 lady is still sitting there, and she is to be called up second. So, with the time waiting for the doctor after you are called back, it was estimated that I would actually be seen at ~5:30-6:00. Though I understand that doctors run behind, waiting almost 2 hours to be seen is not acceptable. Unacceptable, but do I walk out? Yes, I decide I can. I let the receptionist know that I am leaving, but at the same time I tell her she can charge me (which they aren't). So, points earned and lost in the same encounter. And, now, will I get myself together enough to make an appointment with another doctor or not?

New roof a couple of weeks ago. While home at lunch time that day, I observed one of the guys standing in the gutter to support himself, thus bowing the gutter out. Not just in one place, but down the entire length of the gutter. It is pushed back in when I return, but the line of the gutter is not the same. I write the company with my concern, but I make the mistake of mentioning that a gutter nail is loose as well. They send a supervisor out and fix the gutter nail, but they don't address the bent gutter. Do I let it slide, replace the gutter myself, or do I make additional contact? Of course, I know the answer, but will I do what I should do? We shall see...

Trail Run (Prince William Forest Par) 2:16:00 [3] 10.1 mi (13:28 / mi)
shoes: Ice Bugs - Red Storm

Met Keg at PW to hand off the control boxes. Options to Keg were 7:30 (before run) vs. 10 (after run). I am glad she picked before the run because it got me out of the door.

Forecast was for a cold front to come through by the afternoon with dropping temps and high wind, but the morning conditions were beautiful at 40F. Trail conditions were excellent.

Started at parking lot A to South Valley Trail, Mawavi Road, Scenic Drive, Oak Ridge Trail, Old Blacktop Road, Turkey Run Ridge Trail. Enjoyed Oak Ridge and TRR the best. South Valley is generally flat, but it is narrow.

Sports beans about 30 minutes, and GU at 75 & 100 minutes since I was tiring and hungry. I guess I didn't eat enough this morning - small banana and small bowl of cereal.

Not close to my fastest effort of 2:00 in February 07, but it was all I could do today, and I was happy.

Running (W&OD) 36:03 [2] 3.5 mi (10:18 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:188lbs shoes: New Balance 1223

Started from Bluemont @ 8 thinking there would be others from the old BC group there. But there was no one there by 8:05, so I headed out by myself. Just as well since the ones I passed coming back in later were walking.

Ran the first 1.5 miles (549 526 518 halves - 1633 total), but despite the slower pace deep breathes were painful. So, I walked the next half, then turned around and ran back in (451 457 452 445 - 1935).

Temps were 40F with just a spit of rain. Glad I got up and out this morning instead of repeating recent behavior and staying in bed until after 10.

I have absolutely nothing on my schedule for the next two weekends, so it would be easy to sit around and do nothing. Today was a good step towards not letting that happen. Not that I feel like I have to be crazy busy, but I don't want to not workout either.

Walking (W&OD) 21:30 [1] 1.5 mi (14:20 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

Walked the half mile before the turnaround (720), and then another mile at the end (718 652).

Misc (THE DVD) 40:00 [2]

And since my lungs were all nice and expanded, I did this when I got home.

Walking warm up/down (Treadmill) 6:00 [0] 0.3 mi (20:00 / mi)
weight:189lbs shoes: New Balance 1223

Took clothes to work with plan to go to Wakefield Park for a run on the dirt trails. When leaving work, it was starting to rain, and I was a bit leery about running at the park if no one else was going to be around. So, I headed home and got on the treadmill, but it wasn't my day. I quit after 6 minutes, went to the kitchen and had cherry pie (2 pieces), because, if I am going to be fat, I am going for really fat.

Walking warm up/down 9:00 [1] 0.6 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Down to track and back.

Walking (Wakefield track) 36:54 [2] 2.65 mi (13:55 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Ran laps in lane 5 and then walked one in between:
341 342 355 343 338 338 340 334 330 353

Running (Wakefield track) 24:39 [3] 2.65 mi (9:18 / mi)
shoes: Orange Crush (adidas)

Ran laps in lane 5:
254 238 230 228 226 226 226 222 222 207 (last one with a guy I know who was there for the running club workout).

Beautiful evening in the mid 50s F.

I have been taking 1 Aleve every day or every other day, and this has totally taken care of my hip and knee pain.

Monday Feb 4, 2008 #

Misc (THE DVD) 40:00 [2]

Made it all the way to the rolling planks without skipping or pausing, but my arms just wouldn't support myself for those without ~60 more seconds of rest.

I noticed tonight that when Caron says relax, she doesn't really mean it. :)

Orienteering race (Greenbelt Green) 1:41:43 [3] *** 6.1 km (16:40 / km)
shoes: Poison Ice Bugs

OK, I may have been remembering Greenbelt a little more fondly than I should have been.. because, it was nasty out there! I don't think I was in a good part of the map all day. Well, maybe near the end. I was slow, partly attributed to the miles yesterday, and the fact that I am carrying a spare tire around. Ugh!!!

BUT, it was a glorious day in the 50s, so I will not complain anymore than what I have already.

Again, over 160 starts - three meets in a row. Adding epunching to White and Yellow, and requiring it on all other courses sure keeps me hopping. Thank goodness for Darcy's help today.

Note

I forgot to take a power source to the meet today - no batteries, and no inverter in my meet kit. I knew I needed to supply power, but I just plain forgot. I got there plenty early to go out on my course, so I could have turned around and gone back for it. But instead, I called home and asked Roger to bring the batteries to me - about 30 minutes each way for him. Not only did Roger deliver the batteries, but he brought me a sandwich as well. I think I'll keep him.

Trail Run (Lake Accotink) 1:30:00 [3] 8.0 mi (11:15 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1223

A full day made fuller by sleeping until 10:15 this morning. Aghhh!
I was supposed to run this morning and print maps this afternoon (or vice versa), with the Georgetown game sandwiched in between. And then we had dinner plans for this evening.
Usually, the activity I would have blown off was the run, but it was just too beautiful, and since I was in the car anyway coming from the metro, I kept on going to the park.
And, I am so glad I did! Things were a little sloppy from yesterday's rain - just the way I like it.
Two laps around and a little extra to make 8 miles. The plan was run5/walk 1, and that is what I did approximately for the first lap. For the second lap, I walked all the uphills.

Marked splits were:
Lap 1: 549 502 539 704 512 519
Lap 2: 535 534 535 712 503 526

I was flagging a bit the last mile or so, but there was a young man running in jeans, and walking a bit as well. He would pass me, then I would pass him when he walked. I got to my favorite section near the end - when I can smell the car, and I waved him to catch up and stay with me, and we pushed it home. Two big smiles at the end - the universal language. I had a good week.

So, now it is 12 hours later, and I am printing the maps for tomorrow.
