Trail Run (Prince William Forest) 2:30:20 [2] 10.0 mi (15:02 / mi)
weight:190lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Beautiful day with temps around 35. I really like Prince William Forest but the drive up/down 95 can be a deal buster. I didn't let it deter me today.
Legs flat - probably due to yesteday's workout on pavement. Stuck with my original plan to get 10 miles in. Trail in excellent shape except for about 10% which was quite muddy and/or slippery.
Time includes stoppage time for a dog off leash with owners way behind. I really hate that - the dog turned out to be friendly but it stood in the middle of the trail and I wasn't going to try to get past it until its owners arrived. Very irritating and anxious time since I am a bit leary of dogs.
Carried my O map - which was a good thing because the route I was planning to take was closed.
I enjoyed the trip to the woods!!

Walking (back to car) 8:00 [1] 0.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Walked back to car.

Running (Bike trail) 1:07:00 [3] 6.6 mi (10:09 / mi)
ahr:145 shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Almost let the day get away from me - was enjoying a trashy book and too much junk food. Probably needed the rest after 4 straight weekends with O meets (including a canceled one). Now, physically, they weren't all that hard, but mentally it has been a lot of work.
Anyway, head out and feel decent until I turned the corner into a strong head wind. Where did that come from? The trees and wind chimes in the back of the house are quiet.
Tough it out to Bluemont and happily turn around and head home with the wind behind me now (at least most of the way).
Splits coming home were an amazing (for me) 854 and halves of 446 426 429 and 502.
I was so shocked about the 854 mile, and how great it felt, that I had to walk a little of the next one just to make sure I was really okay. :)

Walking warm up/down (Hill home) 7:07 [1] 0.4 mi (17:47 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Measured the hill behind the house today as .18 miles with an elevation change of 85 feet.

My poor left heel is doing well with orthotics - no new blister despite the miles the last couple of days.

Running (Treadmill) 41:20 [1] 3.25 mi (12:43 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Snowing out, so the treadmill would have to do. Turned up WMZQ and got to it... Did my favorite workout - couple minutes of walking to warm up, then .25 mile at 4.6, 4.8, 5.0, 5.2, 5.4, 5.6 and back down. Walked at the end to cool down. I am not sure if I could have added one more up to 5.8, but dinner was almost ready so I didn't have to find out.

Walking 5:52 [1] 0.36 mi (16:18 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Put my orthos in shoes and took a walk around the outside of the school building. Also playing with my new GPS device. I remember why I don't like the inserts - the leather cover is slippery. I wonder if I scuffed them up a bit if they would be easier to walk in...

Running (Neighborhood route) 47:15 [2] 4.65 mi (10:10 / mi)
weight:189lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Lots more pep in the legs today. Temps in mid 40s - short sleeve and short weather. Well, at least for me - not one other runner out in even short sleeves... Wore my ortho inserts - probably not supposed to run in them as far as I did the first time out in ages, but they felt good. Feel very positive after today's run.

Walking 12:39 [1] 0.8 mi (15:49 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Walk up the hill and back to the house.

Running (Glen Carlyn route) 1:03:41 [2] 5.2 mi (12:15 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Wanted to play with my newest GPS device - Garmin Forerunner 301 - includes heart rate monitor. But I mostly bought it becasue the ENTER button is a big red one I can actually see while running. The software I have used to import the data & overlay it on an orienteering map is not working with the new device. I wanted some fresh data to send to the software developer to see if the problem could be resolved.

Otherwise, I would have bagged a workout today...Legs sluggish, but I still managed to make it out to Glen Carlyn and back. Threw in a couple of laps on the track to get up to 5 miles.

Developed a new blister in the usual place - the inner side of my left heel. Don't think I'll ever resolve this problem.

Orienteering race (Riverbend, MD) 1:23:39 [3] *** 5.5 km (15:13 / km) +225m 12:38 / km
shoes: Silva K80 2

Felt sluggish throughout and made a couple of poor route choices. Beautiful day at Riverbend. Often is the meet each year with the worst weather. Actual distance covered was 3.5 miles.

Running (Bike trail) 30:00 [3] 2.35 mi (12:46 / mi)
weight:190lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

According to Ken's weather thingee, it is 53 degrees out. Knew I couldn't stay home on such a nice evening. As usual, my knees ache 2 days out from an O meet. My chest also burned throughout despite the slow pace. So, I climbed the steepest hill back to the house and called it a day. Ran about a mile of this and walked the rest. Feel like I am a big load today.

Orienteering race (Great Falls, MD) 1:13:39 [3] *** 5.5 km (13:23 / km) +200m 11:20 / km
shoes: Silva K80 1

Another 8 am start. Crisp and clear. Wore a tight Under Armour under my O shirt becasue the shirt I wore yesterday rubbed a nice sore under my arm. Thought I would be too warm, but I wasn't for a change. A beautiful day in the open woods. I ran as hard as I could. I was very happy with my effort.
Afterwards, worked the rest of the day with epunching - 109 epunched. What a hectic, enjoyable day. I had excellent help in the form of Andy Strat.

Running (Towpath @ Great Falls) 1:39:20 [3] 9.58 mi (10:22 / mi)
weight:190lbs shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Drove to Great Falls, MD to hand off the electronic controls to Sam L for tomorrow's event. At 9 am, it was about 36 degrees with a little breeze - perfect for a run. Wore short sleeves and tights. Couldn't believe how over dressed others were...
Anyway, ran a mile than had to duck into the woods and rocks to skirt a closed portion of the C&O canal towpath. That mile is listed separately since it was so slow...
Legs felt heavy throughout. I did not get any blisters on my feet, yeah!! Walked 1 minute about every 5-6 minutes.
Miles were 1124 1011 1015 1021 1038 1012 1029 1043

Trail Run (Great Falls, MD) 16:24 [2] 1.0 mi (16:24 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Off path to skirt a closed portion of the towpath. Had to scramble over quite a few rocks.

Running (High 2) 30:00 [2] 2.2 mi (13:38 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 6 S10

Wimped out on running the last two nights . Of course, those were balmy 60 degree evenings, perfect for running especially in February! Not wanting to skip another day, and with 30-35 mph gusty winds this evening, I am relegated to the treadmill. Something to whine about, yeah!!

Here is my track from the GPS - just kidding.

Orienteering (Little Bennett Green) 1:30:00 [3] 5.5 km (16:22 / km) +160m 14:17 / km
shoes: Silva K80 1

Another early start - trails rutted and crusty. Legs a little tired from yesterday, but I enjoyed the time in the woods. Actual distance traveled was 4.8 miles.
This is the route from my ForeRunner 201. The weirdness at the start was a little warm-up.

Orienteering (Little Bennett) 2:34:07 [3] 9.0 mi (17:07 / mi) +345m 15:18 / mi
shoes: Silva K80 2

Needed to vet the White/Yellow controls since they had been out in the park all week since the meet was postponed. Had to meet the team to hand off the electronic controls, so decided to make this a long workout. Ran the White, Yellow, Orange in order with <2 minutes rest in between. Was breaking trail for all of the White and Yellow courses.
White 2.8k 70m 31:25
Yellow 4.3k 130m 54:35
Orange 4.8k 145m 68:07

Trail Run 27:18 [2] 2.0 mi (13:39 / mi)
weight:186lbs shoes: Silva K80 2

Run in to the start (12:37) and the slog back (14:41) when I was done. Beautiful day. Needed more water, and a GU would have been helpful too.

Running (Track) 38:38 [3] 4.09 mi (9:27 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Hurricane 5 Men's

Snowing and 36 out. My usual wimping out scenario. But since I have registered for a 50k in March, I figured I ought to pretend I am training for it.
So, out the door and head towards the high school. The lights are on at the track, and it is empty. I have no plan in mind and push the first mile. Too much as a warm up. Rest 1 minute and do another mile. Keep pushing because I figure they are going to come and kick me off at any minute. End up doing 4 miles with 1 minute rest between. Splits are 1032 (1.08 mile) 924 924 918. Great fun in the snow - just about .5-1" on the track.

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 2:25:00 [2] 10.4 km (13:57 / km) +300m 12:11 / km
weight:189lbs shoes: Silva K80 1

Played hookey from work today and picked up 26/40 electronic controls from Little Bennett. Sam is getting the rest tomorrow. We'll reprogram Saturday morning and put them out for the rescheduled event on Sunday. Beautiful day in the mid-high 30s. Snow on the ground from 1-3 inches - mostly firm. No trails to speak of since the park is closed for the winter, so I headed cross country most of the time. One major error on the control I expected to have problems with. A review of my GPS route shows that I was so close when I bailed out to the road, got another control, and swung back around to it. This is the route from my ForeRunner 201.
