Orienteering race (Susequehanna Stumble) 2:53:40 [3] *** 10.4 km (16:42 / km) +340m 14:21 / km
shoes: New Balance 1223

Perfect Stumble weather, and despite the lack of training, I was excited to participate. Day got off to a little bit of a rocky start when I realized partway to the park that I only had the shoes on my feet. Good thing they were at least running shoes. But with a wet crossing just to get to the start, I was a little bummed about having wet feet all day. Many of the others changed into dry shoes after crossing the creek, and Eddie and Ted carried their wet ones back to the Finish.

I arranged for someone to do the epunching for the event, and with just White, Yellow, and Orange Rec courses, I figured it would be easy enough. I probably underestimated the difficulty of showing a total newbie the ropes, as well as dealing with issuing SI cards to the Stumble participants, and adding the Stumble walk-ups in. So, I wasn't ready at 11:30, and it didn't really look like I would make the mass start either.

I taped my heels, and tried to get some additional instruction in, and then I flew out of there with five minutes to get to the start area. Thank goodness it was all downhill, though a very steep downhill. Think controlled chaos. I was fortunate I didn't end up riding down on my rear. I made it to the bottom safely, but then I had to cross the creek in front of an audience of 50. They were cheering me on. Luckily, I crossed at the area where ropes were set up to hold onto, and I did not embarrass myself. I made it over to the other side with 90 seconds to spare.

Race started, and then I could take a breath and tie my shoes. Off to the first control with Darcy and Gail. We stayed together the whole race, and met our goal of not being overtime (3 hours). Only two real navigational errors.

Enjoyed the day, though a little cold waiting at the end. I needed to wait for the control boxes since I wanted to use 10 of them for a non-QOC event next Saturday. I did not get home until 7:40 - a little late for Roger to hold dinner, so it is in the fridge for tomorrow night.
