5*400m with the juniors - they were not in the most enthusiastic of moods, so an unpleasantly large amount of walking and grumping required. (maybe I was a little tired and grumpy too :-))

Lairig Ghru Race

Well, my first marathon, my first ultra (I think it just counts) and my first really long hill race. I was more than a little nervous of being able to survive this and certainly surviving in reasonable shape. Race strategy was not to think of it as a race, and to be very conservative - slow start, drink lots, and eat early and often. Not sure it all worked quite to plan, and I should probably have drunk even more, but overall I was extremely pleased with the result and to be able to finish quite strongly.

Pacing was really quite slow at the start, with about 52 minutes for the first 10k which was all tarmac and good track. Throughout I was walking up most of the steep bits (leaving the road at Mar lodge, the Luibeg climb and the climb to the top of the pass and using these breaks to munch some food. In many ways this seems to have worked as the last 10k was 47 minutes and I was reeling lots of people in.

Very impressed by the state of the track - lost of really good improvements, especially on the Braemar side. The other surprising thing was the amount of nimble footwork required to keep running - it was a really good path, but with so many big and small stones in it I felt I was dancing rather than running from the Luibeg burn all the way over to the Rothiemurchus forest, a full 16km or so. The dreaded boulder fields round the Pools of Dee were much less fierce than I expected.

The weather was windy, I was almost blown over a couple of times near the summit and for much of the way up to the Derry Lodge I was looking for people to hide behind and act as a windbreak. Occasional showers kept things cool enough in the pass, and it got sunnier into Rothiemurchus.
