Rode an Icelandic pony today. A pleasant enough experience but I kept thinking that we both would have been more comfortable had I hopped off and ran beside him. Every time I ride a horse I can't get over the feeling that the horse must hate it. I suppose one would get past that feeling if one rode frequently. Shoes and bikes do not present such a psychological barrier to enjoyment.

Running warm up/down 8:00 [2] 1.3 km (6:08 / km) +6m 6:00 / km
shoes: Hekla (X-Talon 212)

Warming up back and forth along the route to the start. Felt pretty good, and the rain had paused.

Ice-O day 3, middle distance. This was even tougher (physically and technically) than yesterday. The lava fields were slow(er) going because, though there was often only a few inches of moss, there were lots of chunks of lava and gaps to catch your feet. Also, the bushy vegetation and lupines hid the mapped features in the rough open, punishing me for lazy orienteering in those areas! We also had some adventures on a steep hillside with ridiculous pines. The rain mostly stayed away while i was out there though not the wind. All in all, a fantastic day of orienteering! :-)

Running warm up/down 12:00 [1]

Warming down and taking some photos near the start and finish.

Day 2 of Ice-O, long course at Heidmörk, very fun and different and difficult day. Took a few controls to get into the map. After that I orienteered acceptably but was already wiped out from running in the moss. It was like running on really old mattresses. No springs. Surprisingly, there were trees, only they mostly took the form of densely clustered pines, green patches on the map, and sometimes required crawling to get through, though by the end of the course I was making sure to avoid planning any cuts through the dark green, even if it was just a tiny strip.

After dinner with all the Americans, Caroline and I met up with the Icelanders and a few others at a local pub. The Hekla O Club has had an impressive rise in a very short time. A good bunch of people!

Running warm up/down 3:00 [3]
shoes: Hekla (X-Talon 212)

A rather rushed and short warmup running from the portapotty to the starts, only a bit late for my call up. I did manage to think about many pre-o-race things.

Running warm up/down 18:31 [1] 2.71 km (6:50 / km) +1m 6:49 / km

Warm up for Ice-O day 1 on the warm up map, partially with Caroline. 4 strides but not much else.

Reykjavik city sprint. Pleasantly surprised by the map and course. Really fun. Some not so fine moments of orienteering, but plenty of decent running. Also, saw a lot of Spike on the course, which makes it feel slightly less exotic.

Second woman after Signe Søes. Wonder if I'll ever be next to her again in another prize ceremony. ;-)

Orienteering warm up/down 10:15 [1] *** 1.22 km (8:22 / km) +1m 8:20 / km

Warm down on the map with Caroline

Hiking 27:33 [3] 0.96 km (28:35 / km) +85m 19:50 / km

The campsite was in an old volcanic crater so Melissa and I hiked up to the top to start our day. Pretty awesome views on top - good work to view ratio.

Hiking 23:52 [2] 1.14 km (20:52 / km) +116m 13:51 / km

Up Eldfell in the afternoon to make it two craters in a day. This one blew in 1973, so it's, like, warm and stuff.

In the Westman Islands, a quick evening jog after arriving from our campsite south along the coast. No puffins, but I did geyes scolded on the golf course. Very pretty islands.

Hiking 2:00:00 [2]

Back over to Langidalur, across the Krossa, then lunched in the mouth of Hvannárgil. Back via Hestagil, while learning why a trail may earn a black rating on the map.

To Assa and Sönghellir then over to Langidalur and back via Valahnúkur, the view from which was exceptional especially in all directions.

On top of Valahnúkur.

Day 3: Hvanngil to Thorsmörk. Decided to combine the traditional third and fourth days and make a hard push through to trees! Scenery generally less spectacular this day, but trees!
8 PM

Running (Trail) 24:20 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (14:20 @3) 3.67 km (6:38 / km) +179m 5:20 / km
shoes: Precious (RocLite 268)

Running from the sign between Hùsadalur and Langidalar down to the HI huts in Hùsadalur to see I'd they had room, then back up to the sign (and a waiting group of weary hikers...).

Hiking (Backpack) 4:00:00 [2] 17.0 km (14:07 / km) +100m 13:43 / km

Day 2: Hrafntinnusker to Hvanngil. And now back down to snow-free and greener land. Still no trees though. Iceland is a pretty place but it must have been so much prettier when the coasts were covered in trees!

Weather still pretty good. One chilly stream crossing and a hut almost entirely to ourselves! Nice scenery again, natch.

Hiking (Backpack) 3:30:00 [2] 12.0 km (17:30 / km) +500m 14:29 / km

Laugavegur Day 1: Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker. Mostly in the snow, and thankfully there were beds available in the hut and we didn't have to camp. Took a soak in Landmannalaugar before leaving, and it was a nice day - not too much rain and, of course, very purdy scenery.
