Note

Left knee still ached, also the kneecap was painful upon flexing my leg, so I soaked it for 15 minutes -- a bit better.

Orienteering race 3:50:00 [3] 14.0 km (16:26 / km)
ahr:145 max:181 shoes: Jalas2

Billygoat Run at Huntington State Park, Redding, CT. Steady, light rain, cool conditions, terrain slippery. My first failure to finish under the 3:30 time limit in 13 outings.

I fell off the back of my train on the leg to 17, after which the navigation was so-so. Sometimes my brain was out to lunch, sometimes I was right on. Made a stupid error on an Orange level control. I had good stamina, but chose my split poorly, and tried to be clever and failed.

Rain and poor visiblity from fogged glasses didn't help my mood, either. Bleah.

Last night I bought a 6 of Wachusett Ale, brewed in the shadow of Mt. Wachusett, site of the Billygoat in '96. After the brutal slog-fest today, I did not offer them to the Head Goat as a bribe.

Note

Injury Inventory
No cramps. I had some salty broth planted at the aid station, about 1000mg of sodium in 5 oz of water. Aaah.

I took a couple of spills early. In one, my L knee disloged a grapefruit sized rock from the ground. Impact was above the gaiter level. Another fall was in the gaiter zone, but it had shifted, so I have a nice couple of bruises around my knee.

Another late trip did no damage, but I did get in a graceful roll and came back up on my feet with only a stride or 2 wasted.

Midrace I felt as if a stick had lodged inside my shoe. At the end of the race, I found a 2cm long piece of bark had slipped through the upper of my shoe and lodged there, rubbing my little toe for half the race. Nice blister.

Newly sewn velcro on the tip of the gaiters kept my shoelaces protected. I did not have to retie them all race. I did spend considerable time yanking up gaiters.

Road running warm up/down 28:00 [1] 4.0 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: BA10

800m w/u, 800m c/d, and 6 x 400 recovery between 400 intervals.

Road running intervals 10:00 [3] 2.4 km (4:10 / km)
ahr:156 max:178 shoes: BA10

6 x 400 at the WPI track, done at increasing speed. High winds were blowing from the east, maybe 15mph. I didn't notice when the wind was behind me (homestretch), but it was in my face on the backstretch. Oddly enough, the 200 into the wind, run first, was faster than the 200 with the wind, run second. Only in one interval was I successful at evenly splitting the two 200s.

The interval times were 1:49, 1:46, 1:44, 1:43, 1:40, and 1:36. HR ranges from 142 for the first to 159 for the last.

Legs felt at about 80%.
