Brought the big bike to work today and rode up on the roads to Camp Fortune. Nothing like doing a 1h 10min warm-up for a 1h17min race :) This is the paved portions of the way there and back. I buried my rear light in my backpack so decided to take trails all the way home. Did touch a street until the 200m leading up to my house!

Sunset Series race #2, my first of the season and looking at the schedule, maybe my last. Now that I'm a "masters" athlete in the MTB world, I started with the big guns. Only 10 or so riders in our wave. I stuck with them down the gravel road until the first climb and suddenly the weekend's race showed up in my legs...ugh. I stayed in front of Viper so at least I wasn't last :) Being in that spot, I didn't have any traffic at all (save SuperWoman who started in the wave behind me and blew by on one of the rocky downhills) which was a nice change. Once I got to the point of the course where we integrated with the sport racers I was actually passing racers which I'm not used to doing on that challenging course. 2nd lap I felt more comfortable and 3rd lap even more so. I think my laps actually got a little faster as my legs didn't protest as much and I was getting used to technical riding again. My front wheel is so light now that I accidentally overturned a couple of corners; I was used to more resistance throwing my bike around!
Ended up 2nd of 2 in my category, but I had no problem being only 6 minutes back of von Gluberschmidt - the pro racer.
Nice not to have to bring any tools or tubes on the course; I knew the bike would be fine.
I did get my weight in front of my axle at one point whilst not paying attention at low speed and hit my knee on a rock. Not much of a cut but man is it ever stiff now!

After the race, I put the lights on and took the MTB trails homeward. Beautiful ride in the rain!
