Southern Championships

Oh good lord - what a terrible race. Not sure I've ever struggled as much physically as towards the end of this. I tried to go for it a bit more than in previous classic distances, but was flagging before halfway. Then Matt caught me which was disheartening (although I'd have felt better if I'd known how much of a flyer he was on), and over the last km or so everyone I'd caught started to come back past me.

There were probably a few reasons: not enough food in the morning, not enough gel (especially given I tipped half of the one I did have down my front), I put in a lot yesterday, plus was late to the start so set off flustered and having just run hard. But I seem to have a specific fitness problem with classics - I was expecting to do much better than this given the chasing sprint result. Hmm.

To cap it all off I've just noticed I mispunched #1, I had no idea (and am a bit surprised, but haven't seen the map again yet). Can't say I'm too disappointed to have that result erased from the records though, UK cup points aside.

Got a better result than I expected having chosen the wrong route to #6 and wobbled a bit on the way. Pleased with speed and strength.

Knew given who was around me that this would be mainly a physical challenge. The pack ahead was pretty scrappy for a lot of it, which helped me, and I was happy to sit in with them and give it as much as I could on the last couple of hills.

Pleased with the overall result of 25th, and felt good to really give it a go physically.
