Orienteering race 1:11:16 intensity: (30:00 @4) + (41:16 @5) *** 12.6 km (5:39 / km) +180m 5:17 / km
spiked:18/23c shoes: Jalas Jukkola

November Classic
DSQ (but 71:16 was good enough for 3rd). Won by Peter Hodkinson in 69:30.

Pretty cross with myself about this one! Up until #18 I was having quite a good race, and was on for a good result (2nd place at #18, 11s down, having led from #13-16). Then was sloppy to #19 - despite having noticed at the start of the leg that there was potential for a mistake - and then #20 happened...

...or rather it didn't. I set off slightly wrong, then misread the "path end" symbol on the control descriptions as "tower". Then thought "no need to worry about the code" as a tower is quite distinctive. Then spotted a tower/hide with a control on (more or less on my route in because of the initial small mistake). But this was next door to our control on the path end. Only realised I had mispunched when I finished and looked back over the map. Cue much banter back at assembly.

On the plus side I'm pleased with my speed at the moment. Navigation was not perfect and I felt a little off-colour after booze and fancy food celebrating our anniversary - in fact HRM says I let the intensity drop in the middle part of the race, and I did think at the time that I was struggling to push myself. But my time was still decent. Looking forward to next time...

November Classic 2009

Terrain running warm up/down 50:00 [1] 9.0 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Jalas Jukkola

Decent warm-up and -down, plus a jog out to Emma's #1. She thought she had made a right mess of it, but it turned out she'd navigated there perfectly but must have misread the control code either on the descriptions or on the flag. Repeatedly.
Not a good day for Cochranes and control codes.

Note

Frustratingly I don't think there's much I can learn from that. I think I checked all other codes, and only didn't check this code because "tower" is such a distinctive feature. It's all very well saying I'll be more careful next time - but in the heat of a race I'm not sure I would be.

X-training (swimming) 10:00 [1]

Messing about in the pool during spa day at our swanky hotel - it was training because I played the usual game of "how far can I swim while holding breath".

ITW
Tired and achey. Ready for an easy week/2 weeks and a new pair of shoes.

or rather most of the way, got a puncture. Thought it felt unusually tough most of the way, could have been a slow burner.

Road running 1:14:00 [3] 10.0 mi (7:24 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2140

HFW.
Slightly harder route (more climb, and long uphills/sharp downhills) but better conditions (not first thing in the morning, climb is all later in the route). Reckon it is harder overall as I was definitely not going at an easy pace tonight.
