orienteering race 50:31 [3] *** 5.27 km (9:35 / km) +164m 8:18 / km
spiked:12/16c shoes: Icebug Spirit

West Point, Victor Constant Ski Slope, Team Trials, Blue M21E, 4.3 km, 140 m, 32nd. Surprisingly not DFL, though last of six in the "M-21+ WOC NC" category. Pretty sloppy, and there were a few team trialers who were not very far ahead. Overshot #1 (should have just gone with my initial instinct to run back through the callup lines and down the road), overshot #2, overshot #6 by a couple of steps, way off on #7 (there were a lot of people wandering around in the wrong area there), kind of a wavy route to #9 but really not too bad, ran right past #14 without seeing it, lured by the siren song of a control on another boulder even though the whole way there I was thinking "this doesn't look right". And the rest went fine. Had somebody in my vicinity for a while early on (pretty embarrassing for him to be making enough errors to not be pulling away from me), then had Dave Pruden in view off and on in the latter part of the course.

running (trails) 56:06 [3] 7.4 km (7:35 / km) +97m 7:07 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

The plan was to go for a shortish run at Rattlesnake Hill, butwhen I got there I realized that I had neglected to bring a shirt. I guess I could have run without one, but I decided to just go home and run across the street, and go a bit farther. I also decided that when I got the junction at the top of the hill, I'd do Shorter if I was already over 30 minutes, and Longer if not. The watch said 29:17, so I kept going, but there was a recently blazed trail to the right before I got to the Friendly Trail, so I took that, and it ran roughly parallel and joined back up at Hickory Woods. A bunch of newly fallen trees here and there, as usual. Taking the next two days off to rest up.

WBSW, exactly the same loop as a week ago. Considerably wetter today, and I managed to be a couple of minutes faster. Curiously, the watch also says that this run was 300 meters shorter. I don't remember which watch I used last week, but this one was the Garmin 10, and I think it just doesn't capture tight turns as well as the 405. Neither one does a very good job, to be honest. I punched a split on both runs at the same place. That spot is just after a set of tight switchbacks, and before another set. Neither watch really shows them at all. So the actual distance is probably somewhat more than either track shows, though not a whole lot more, because most of the loop isn't twisty.

After writing all that, I realized that about 2/3 of the discrepancy in both distance and time was because last week I ran from the car to the trailhead, then back to the car to check something. But the watches still don't show the switchbacks. And I also just realized that the high point on this trail loop is also Rattlesnake Hill (not to be confused with the place in Bolton near my office).

Note

I have examined the registration list for M-21-Elite at the Team Trials this coming weekend, with an eye toward my chances, and I sincerely think that this could be the year.

A piece of the Midstate with Nancy, with a car shuttle. No Active Ankle, but I didn't twist it, either, so no problem.
