Willard Brook SE, In The Dark. I had intended to go for a run in daylight, initially planning on a new place near work, but I forgot my shorts, and I ended up staying later at work than I had intended, and when I got home my brother called and we needed to discuss some stuff, so it was about 7 PM when I got out the door, and in these post-equinox times, that means there's more moon than sun. Warm evening, kind of humid, actually quite pleasant to be out.

I tried again to do the Challenge Loop clockwise, and again I failed. Same initial problem, I'm leaving Old City Road in the right place (or close to it), but this time I didn't even see the left hand turn that I missed. But then later I'm apparently crossing the trail that I want to be on, without seeing it, because I end up to the left of it. Then after I got out to the bigger trail, this time I missed the right-hand turn (actually, I think I saw it but was confused about where I was), and ended up out at the cleared area on Kevin O'Brien's property. I went along the edge of that, looking for a way back into the woods, and eventually found what I was hoping would be a trail, but it petered out at some stumps. I continued anyway, figuring that if I kept the moon behind me, I'd hit the trail... even if I had to go through some laurel... and I did. Topology said I should turn left, which I did, and I won't say that things looked familiar, but I did recognize the hairpin stone wall when I reached it, and realized that I had the opportunity to take the previously unexplored Seven Bridges Road, though I didn't remember that that was what it's called. I saw at least four little wooden bridges, a couple of which were in good shape and a couple of which were trashed.

Something (presumably an insect or whatever) appears to have bitten me a few times on the legs. Mosquitoes, I would guess. I also twisted my right ankle prettty hard near the end, but it seems fine now.

Note

AOWN: On Rte.2, coming home from flying (a run might have been smarter, but it was really hot out), I saw a dead bear on the shoulder. I think that's a first for me, as well as the first time I've seen a wild bear in Massachusetts that I can recall. (I've seen them in NH and CT. And WA, WY, and AK. And I probably heard one in WI.)
