paddling (kayak) 1:02:11 [2] 6.12 km (10:10 / km) +4m 10:08 / km

Nashua River upstream from David E. Ross and back, yellow boat. I figured I wanted to to about an hour, and also figured that downstream would be about twice as fast as upstream, so that meant 40 minutes before turning around. I kind of wanted to pick some kind of a landmark for the turnaround, and a perfect one presented itself: a downed tree all the way across the river that I couldn't have gotten past without getting out of the boat (and it still wouldn't have been a simple matter).

I must say, I'm really impressed by whatever heuristic Ken has implemented for guessing what activity type I did when I upload from my GPS watch. I just did two sessions, and it correctly picked "paddling" and "orienteering" out of my own activity list. I don't know what criteria he uses, but it's working pretty well.

Note

Pretty weird experience for Friday the 13th, though not as bad for me as for somebody else: mid-morning, my boss was apparently told to pack up the personal items from his office and was escorted from the building. And at 11:00 his direct reports were called into a meeting and we were told that his employment at the company had been terminated, and they couldn't tell us any more about it.

pedaling (road bike) 31:23 [3] 12.64 km (2:29 / km) +127m 2:22 / km

I finally got around to putting the cyclometer that I bought a while ago onto the bike, and I had time for a quick spin, "around the block". Need to remember that the pavement on Tyler Road sucks, and I should definitely avoid going there unless they resurface it. I was looking forward to getting to the end of it, but I took the right and found that Gilchrest St. had been completely ripped up, so I was riding on dirt until I got to the Lunenburg line.

A little jaunt on the Incubus, beautiful evening. Caught a whiff of some lilacs.

Back out to Townsend with three objectives:
1) Run the two legs (9-10-11) that I missed due to my skip.
2) Check out a spot that had prompted some discussion on Attackpoint a while ago (need to track down that thread and post my findings).
3) Redo two legs near the end that I had been sloppy on. I ran about the same time on #19 (that might be counting a little bit of extra time at the end), but #20 was the one I was really interested in. By not screwing up and getting stuck in the fight, and instead doing it the way I had intended on Sunday, I was almost 4 minutes faster (and that includes a little head-scratching at the end to figure out where the control had been, rather than following Alar into it). Would have been good enough for the 15th best split, and only 12 seconds behind the 11th best. That's considerably better than any of my real splits.

Scheduling of the event was excellent this year. Two days later, the leaves are already considerably more lush, and the black flies are definitely more swarmy.

Well, despite the fact that the sun is shining right now, it's time to put Rain-X on my glasses, that's all I've got to say.

orienteering race 2:04:01 [3] *** 13.39 km (9:16 / km) +254m 8:28 / km
spiked:16/23c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280 #1 (blue)

Billygoat, 11.15 km, 220 m, 26th place. Went into this with limited expectations due to my foot issues and the fact that they have meant that I've gotten precious little exercise over the past six months. My plan was to jog at a sustainable pace and just try to be clean. Not that it worked out that way.

#1: Moving along with a respectable crowd, I cut left off the trail to go through the white woods, which I still think was a good idea. I seemed to be all by myself, though I was told that a bunch of Pygmy Goat runners went that way. Unfortunately, I didn't see the small trail that was right on the line on the last 1/3 of the leg, and was reading my way though the contours less than 100 m to the left of it. I eventually hit it, of course, just as a crowd of people who I figured would be slower than me were cruising by. By the time I reached the control, I was in better company, and didn't feel so bad.
#2: Went right by #11, where Kestrel was standing there trying to find the SR control on the map so he'd know where he was. Seemed pretty obvious to me, and I just kept going.
#3: David Onkst was nearby, and I asked him what he was thinking of skipping. He mentioned some possibilities, and I said maybe #10 or #19, and Magnus, who was just ahead of us, said "Four!".
#4: Magnus went off to skip (never saw him again), but we continued to #4, just behind Nadim. David was running, but I was walking and keeping up with him.
#5: Followed Nadim down the hill, hoping he knew where he was going, which he did.
#6: Behind Nadim and David, who both seemed a little confused when we got to the reentrant, thinking the cliff would be on the other side. I thought it would be on the cliff just to our right, and it was.
#7: Took a good crash when I stepped on a wet log, but I bounced right back up. We caught up to the Hendertupskis here (they had skipped #2).
#8: I was leading the little group, which felt better than just barely being able to keep up. Got a little left of the line, but I read my way in okay, and we converged with another group that I think included Ken Sr. and Phil.
#9: Contouring leg, but I spotted a flag a little to my left, failed to confirm that it agreed with the map, and when I got there, it was #2 (I kind of had a feeling about that). Turned right, but a little too much, and went down the wrong (green) reentrant. And everybody in the group got ahead of me.
#10: Skip!
#11: Being in the back wasn't so bad, as they all headed down the hill to #10, and I went straight ahead to #11. On my own, never saw any of those guys again (they made a big mistake a couple of controls later), and I navigated pretty cleanly to the control I had seen on the way to #2.
#12: Uphill, so easy to keep concentration at the reduced speed. Seemed like there were some unmapped marshy places on the way, but I spiked it.
#13: Took the high route, saw the fence only once near the end, and had no trouble.
#14: Straight, over the ridge.
#15: Easy trail run, eating part of a GU, and up through the green, but I got a little mixed up in there and lost a bit of time.
#16: Nice downhill leg orienteering through the white. attacked for the trail bend and lost contact, but relocated on the ridge just south of the control, arriving just ahead of Juha.
#17: Through the woods, looking for the swamp and green, and I crossed paths with Hillary and Jeff, who I mistakenly thought were heading for #17, but who were really on their way to #20 (but not doing a very good job of it). Ernst merged in as well, and I thought I knew where I was, and also figured out what they were up to. I found the large boulder just outside the circle on the north, and headed south but missed. I encountered Stephen (on the Pygmy) and remarked that I didn't know where I was. He said he could show me, but I replied that I'd figure it out. I basically turned around and saw the rock, just as Nancy and other Pygmies were punching.
#18: Straight at it, hit the trail a little south of the water, used that as an attack, and misread the contours, thinking it was further north than it was. I saw Juha in here, who I think had missed it and gone back out to the trail to attack again. I stopped to read the map more carefully, went to the right spot, and Juha was coming in as I was leaving.
#19: Went too directly to the trail, Juha angled more and popped out ahead of me. He got to the control just ahead of me.
#20: Initially planning to go right of the line, I headed SE out of the control, but then changed my mind and decided to take the MTB trails left of the line. I executed the first part of this badly, diving into the fight and getting stuck. I turned left and got to the marsh, which was more open and provided a path out of there. The trail route was nice, though I cut a corner at the end, which was probably silly. Good attack from the trail, and almost caught up to Alar at the control.
#21: Alar stopped to hold the dog, and I just about caught up to Glen at the control.
#22: Pretty much due west to the marsh, turned left and hit the trail. Lost Glen in here somewhere.
#23: Run.
#24: Run. Spotted Eva (Pygmy) up ahead, but didn't quite catch her. Just as I was nearing the field, I stubbed my right big toe on a root, same deal as when I (probably) broke it in March. Ow, but not as bad as before. Flubbed the last few meters for a few irrelevant seconds.

Fastest finish for me since 2003 (but I think this was a short/fast course), and a respectable placing as well, considering my expectations. I think I couple of hotshots who I hadn't expected showed up, so maybe the best I could have hoped for would have been about 23rd, so 26th ain't bad at all. I also forgot the Rain-X in the kitchen table, so I ran with my old glasses, that I hoped had some residual stuff on them, but it turned out to barely sprinkle anyway.
