Took a stroll down to the Lane property with my bowsaw, to take out a horizontal (but still alive) tree that was across the trail where we decided to cross the gully. Managed to do that without any peril (but I needed to be a little careful, as there was some energy stored up in there). Somebody else (likely Bob) has gone through and cut off some grapevines at the knees (I think that's what they are; some are as thick as my arm). Don't know how much foot traffic it's been getting, but with the tree out of the way, it should be passable by mountain bikes. There was a set of hoofprints, and that should also help to get it established. Walked the length of it and back.

Orthopedist says that the x-rays indicate that the toe is healing well, so I should just baby it for another week, then ramp back up to normal activity. Feels better now that the cotton and tape are off, but it still kind of points in a funny direction when I'm barefoot. I'm suspecting that it will be permanently crooked, and I'll always have to watch out for catching it on things. A minor concern, as I usually wear shoes.

Note

I heard a story on the radio this morning about the obscure little hamlet of Island Pond, VT, which you may recognize from my Attackpoint location. Lest you think I'm involved with these maple machinations, I'll point out that I do not actually reside in Island Pond. The only way to specify a US location was, until recently, to provide a zip code. That seems to have changed, and now there's a map that you can click on, but it still jumps to the nearest post office. Now it says Norton, but it's supposed to be Avery's Gore.

Made myself useful at the finish line again.

Sometime in the past year, I was remarking that I found tree bark to be a fascinating evolutionary mechanism, and that I wished I had a book about it. Charlie remarked that maybe I would be the right guy to write such a book, but I said that I didn't know enough about the subject. Then about a week ago, I was walking past a bookstore and spotted exactly what I was looking for in the window, so I immediately bought it.

(Not to be confused with this album, which I also have, in vinyl:)
