orienteering race 1:17:31 [3] *** 8.11 km (9:34 / km) +297m 8:05 / km
spiked:15/18c shoes: VJ Integrator #3

West Point, Bull Hill, Red (M35), 6.3 km, 131m. A little time lost on #3 because I gamble on the green and and it was pretty thorny, fairly serious error on #4 when I didn't properly read the various mapped and unmapped features on the hillside, and ended up wandering around trying to figure out exactly where I was -- pretty sure I had run right by it in the first place (GPS reveals that I had been high). On #8, I climbed the hill above the one I wanted, but I could see the flag from up there. Other than than just a few very small hiccups, but I certainly wasn't fast. But I found them all, and it was a nice day to be outdoors.

Note

Considered going for a run tonight, but Mom called while I was on my way home from work and asked if I could sweep her chimney, which I hadn't done since fall because there was so much snow on the roof. The cap was far more clogged than I had ever seen it. While I was there, I pulled out my chainsaw and felled a small standing dead maple on the edge of her yard and cut it up. Nearly filled her woodbox with nice dry wood that should keep her toasty for the remainder of the season.

running 46:54 [3] 6.15 km (7:37 / km) +93m 7:05 / km
shoes: GoLite Blaze Lite

Wanted to see if I could find the skinny little piece of town-owned land* coming off of Gilchrest St, and then went for a reverse trip around the northern part of Shorter Mystery Blazes, figuring that was a route that would be relatively dry.

Didn't get out of work particularly early, but I was still able to go for an evening run without a light. And it was in the low 60s, T-shirt weather. I looked around this morning at what was left, and figured that today would be the day when my yard finished melting out and would be snow-free. I was close -- I kicked around the leaves in front of my other garage door, and found a trace of ice under there that had been insulated by the foliage.

*I suspect that I succeeded, though there's some squishiness in the evidence. If you unclick the Terrain box and zoom in a notch or two, you can see the boundary, and it looks like I'm to the north and east of it. However, it's also clear that the boundary lines are not correctly registered with the rest of the map, because the roads don't line up. Other than the side trip I made to check something out, I was mostly following a stone wall.

running (woods) 33:47 [3] 2.05 km (16:29 / km) +317m 9:18 / km
shoes: Nike Initiator

My flight was only about 20 minutes, so I packed up quickly and headed up through the woods to get the truck. Approximate route. I don't know yet if there's an established record for this, but today's run could be it. I've never timed how long it takes to do it by car, but I'd guess it's at least 15 minutes, maybe a bit more. Could have done a little better with proper shoes. I was also wearing jeans, and no shirt. Gorgeous day to be outside.
