orienteering race 2:31:34 [3] *** 16.92 km (8:57 / km) +500m 7:48 / km
spiked:17/19c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

41st annual Blue Hills Traverse. I believe this was my 21st one, and 16th in a row. Reasonably cold (mid 20s F, I think), and probably in the top 10 among windiest orienteering races I've run (though maybe I'm forgetting how windy it was at some of the events in Wyoming). It was really windy. Like, probably 30+ mph gusting to at least 45. I wore my lightweight gloves the whole time, a hat most of the time, and a long-sleeve synthetic shirt plus an O-top, which was pretty comfortable (except for when we were waiting on the golf course for the start).

I don't really like the BHT, but I tend to do pretty well. I was in the vicinity of Magnus and Kseniya for a lot of the race, and I think I was ahead of them at #14, but then I lost time hunting around for #15 (not the first time I've lost time in that area, and I went right past it on my first attack -- 9 minutes lost) and they got past me. Finished 10-20 seconds after Kseniya, and Magnus was already done. Other than #15, we lost a little time on #16 wondering where the little rootstock was, and my route to #2 was not what I intended, but I was looking at the wrong intersection on the map and made a left turn that went south of the big green swamp. Magnus was going that way, Kseniya went the other way, and I guess it wasn't too bad a choice, because I got there just behind Kseniya. The rest was basically fine. Didn't end up too wiped, though both calves were twingeing like they were ready to cramp at the very end.
