orienteering race (corn maze) 19:34 [4] **** 2.1 km (9:19 / km) +1m 9:18 / km

US Classic Champs at Mike's Maze. Pretty good effort, I managed to keep good contact and still find some places where I could safely open it up. Not positive that all of my route choices were ideal, but they did work. The only real problem was on #16, where I got a little ahead of myself and realized I was a little too far north, about halfway to #17, and had to backtrack. Third place, behind Ian and feet, which I'm not too unhappy about.

US Relay Champs at Mike's Maze. I was partnered with Dan Bond, who had DNFed in the Classic, so I was thinking that I might be in the mass start, but he came through in the relay and sent me off right in the thick of things, a few steps behind Stephen. Again, I managed to keep contact pretty well and make good time, until it came for the long leg, diagonally all the way across the maze. I was okay for the first 10-20% of the leg, then just started working my way south and lost track of where I was. Eventually I was just trying to relocate, and was frustrated because I couldn't find any more paths going the way I needed to go. I saw a few people who were also on the second relay leg, and it dawned on me that the reason I couldn't find a way south was that I was at the south end of the map I had thought I was probably only about 2/3 of the way there). From there, it was easy to get to the control. The next one was a big screwup, too, as managed to navigate perfectly to #3 --- but I was supposed to be going to #11. Hawkins passed me on the way to #12, and I managed to almost catch back up to Alex and Stephen (who took the other route), but had to settle for watching the three of them in a finishing sprint as I was heading for the last control.

US Night Champs/24-hour Corn Rogaine. I took a mostly clockwise loop through the maze, then and out-and-back on the north side to get the one on the outside, order was 49-65-67-66-68-69-70-46-64-47-48-50. Nobody seemed to be going my way, I encountered only a few people going the opposite way. The only serious error was that I misread the map and thought that 65 was on the south end of a loop rather than being at a dead end, and I went the wrong way around the eyeball. This problem was probably caused in part by the fact that I forgot to switch back to my orienteering glasses from my driving glasses. I could read the map well enough to navigate, for the most part, but I had to lft them up to read the control codes. Hatlamp with the batteries getting weak was definitely adequate. I switched on the high beam for the run around the outside, but the battery was low enough that it was definitely sagging when I headed back, and I switched back to the low beam. Another third place, behind Ian and Ben, not too bad.

Note

Just got the inside scoop that the UNO Camping weekend is going to be severely hampered this year. Apparently some significant chunk of the map is off limits due to environmental sensitivity concerns, and no off-trail activities are permitted after dark, so the Vampire-O and WHN-O are both off the table.

To the ConComm meeting.

pedaling (unicycle) 12:55 [2] 1.93 km (6:42 / km)

Back from the meeting, in the dark (hatlamp), moon not high enough to help. One dismount on a patch of rough pavement on Turkey Hill Rd.
