After a none-too-impressive flight at Greylock (< 12 minutes) I packed up quickly and changed my plans for the day. Rather than it being a hang gliding day, I decided it was a mountain climbing day that happened to have a little hang gliding. From Gould Farm, I headed up the Bellows Pipe Trail, then the Thunderbolt Trail, which I took to the summit. The time includes a couple of brief stops to chat with other hikers (which was worthwhile, because I met a couple who were willing to drive one of the other cars down, thereby saving us a bunch of shuttle time). I wasn't ideally equipped for running: in my pockets I had a cell phone, a GPS tracker, and a camera, plus I had a 2-meter ham radio in my hand. Still, I did manage to jog the first part, until it got too steep. Looks like I took one unnecessary detour that may have added as much as 350 meters, though it probably flattened out the climb a bit. Looks like the GPS was working fairly well today. An hour is a pretty good time for this ascent, maybe not in terms of what friends of mine could do, but in relative terms compared to a car, which would have to take a much longer route; GoogleMaps puts it at 15.9 miles, 39 minutes.
