hiking 1:00:00 [1] 2.93 km (20:30 / km)

In Boothbay Harbor with Nancy -- the first half of this was what I think the AR crowd calls "coasteering", scrambling on rocks below the high-tide line. Fairly low intensity, with a lot of stops to look at lighthouses and other oceany things, and to take pictures, but I figure anything where I can roll my ankle at least marginally qualifies as exercise.

Note

Zeeeeero. Too much going on.

orienteering race (corn maze) 19:33 [4] **** 1.95 km (10:03 / km)
spiked:5/12c shoes: Nike Initiator

Classic. Moving too fast for my ability to navigate, went some pretty weird places.

orienteering race (corn maze) 8:34 [4] **** 0.49 km (17:27 / km)
spiked:2/6c shoes: Nike Initiator

Sprint. Moving waaaay too fast for my ability to navigate, did some serious thrashing around in very dumb places.

orienteering race (corn maze) 10:04 [4] **** 1.06 km (9:29 / km)
spiked:4/8c shoes: Nike Initiator

Relay, with Geoff Pingree. He tagged off to me in an excellent position (2nd?), and I proceeded to let most of the field get past me. A slightly better job of maintaining contact, but still not nearly good enough. I really need to spend more time figuring out my route before I head off toward a dead end, and I should probably be walking, not running. But loads of fun in any case.

exercises 1:15 [4]

50 situps, 25 squats. At a more leisurely than usual pace.

Feeling disrespected, disillusioned, and experiencing some odd forms of physical discomfort (hand and shoulder aches). Somewhat mistreated, scapegoated and misutilized. Unsure if I want to continue with the current employment track, while wondering if I'm a wimp if I don't. Feeling sorry for myself, and feeling like a whiner. And fat. Presumably feeling better than Kissy.

running (woods) 30:37 [2] 5.43 km (5:38 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Partial Mystery Blazes, as far as where it crosses the power line trail, then back to the esker and home. I thought I had done this another time recently, but I took a quick look and didn't find it.

running (trails) 33:24 [3] 3.29 mi (10:09 / mi) +256m 8:11 / mi
shoes: Nike Initiator

Townsend State Forest West. Parallel to the rail line, then the shortcut up to the big crucifix (I was wrong!), out to the trail going up, left at the NHArrow rock, and continued up until the next junction. Then back down the other way (left at the NHArrow rock), which is a more gradual slope and probably more pleasant for going up. Nearly twice as fast on the descent. There was a woman and her dog up at the crucifix -- unusual for me to encounter people in the woods, and I was somewhat impressed by her because it's a pretty good climb to get up there, and she was smoking a cigarette.

GPS track was again not very good. When I pulled it put of my pocket to turn it off, it looked like the LED was already off, but the time agrees with my watch, so maybe I bumped the button while pulling it out, or maybe it was on and I just couldn't see it. In any case, I should try something like putting it on a hat to see if it works better, or maybe replace it.

running 1:02:18 [3] 5.52 mi (11:17 / mi)
shoes: Nike Initiator

Townsend State Forest West. Parked on Dudley Rd. and headed south on the old rail line to check out the spot where the old trestle used to be. To my great surprise, the trestle was still standing, though I could have sworn I had been told long ago that it was gone. Upon further thought, I think I had been told that it had burned down, and when I walked across, I could see a few spots that I would describe as "scorched", but not seriously burnt. There are a few ties missing, but the main structure appears to be intact. I'm not sure that it would be safe for locomotives (no danger of that happening), but it looks fine for light traffic.

From there I headed north, looking for a good spot to leave the railroad bed, hoping to run trails. I wanted old established trails, not recent skidder tracks covered with slash, and eventually I just headed up through the woods, and found an absolutely lovely trail up on top. I ran that for a way, tehn turned around and followed trails back, so now I know a place to get on the nice trails from the bottom. Note to self: the path to the big crucifix is a dead end (that's not intended to be a metaphor, but...).

GPS track is... not particularly accurate. At all. For example, I followed the railroad bed on the way up. I might need to think about getting something newer. Looks like I still have some climbing to do to get to the top of Barker Hill.
