running race (pavement) 52:17 [4] 3.7 mi (14:08 / mi) +701m 8:54 / mi

Ascutney Hillclimb, 131/191 for the whole field, and 35/44 for the M40-49 age group (cracked the top 80% on that one!). It's entirely possible that this is the first time I've ever entered a running race on pavement, and I was much more anxious about it than I am about the more familiar territory of orienteering. Positioned myself at the back to start out, figuring that I'd be happier working my way forward than having people streaming by me. Ran the whole thing, though other people around me did a fair bit of walking. They seemed to go faster when they ran, and the same speed as me when they walked, but somehow never got very far ahead. My gait did get Wagonesque on the steepest parts (and my feet aren't even that big!), so I'm not sure whether maintaining the running was productive or not.

After grabbing some snacks, I went out to the hang glider launch, then up to the tower, to Brownsville Rock and back, then returned to the parking lot.

Back down the auto road. It's a sobering thought to realize that even though I was moving at a very good clip down the road, I was only a few seconds faster than the winner took on the way up!
