West Point Post, hot weather again. This area has a lot of uncrossable fences, which had two effects. The first is that the course was not measured around these obstacles, so it was slightly longer than advertised. More significantly, these fences were mentioned in the meet notes, but I didn't read the meet notes, so I wasn't thinking about that when i started the race. I had seen some other people running across the parking lot, and when I took my initial glance at the map that looked like a fine route, but I suddenly found myself facing non-neogotaible chain-link that I hadn't noticed on the map. My first attempt to correct just took me to more fence, and my only reasonable bailout was to take a gamble (that worked) that I would be able to pick my way through a large blob of fight. There was more fence to deal with a bit later, but that wasn't as bad to find a way through. At the map exchange, I stood still for what seemed like a long time (but was probably really only 10-15 seconds) wondering where the box with the Part 2 maps was, until I remembered that there was another map on the back of Part 1 (this was also mentioned in the meet notes). I hadn't previewed part 2 during any of the dead running that I had already done, and the next control was a long route choice leg that was affected by more uncrossable fences, so I hesitated for a bit there. The rest was basically okay.
Note
Wore the Integrator shoes that I really think fit okay when I bought them, but that feel too tight now (though not quite as bad as when I made the mistake of putting neoprene socks under them back in January). Didn't quite blister (other than an unrelated small one under a big toe), but my feet wound up pretty sore, undoubtedly due in large part to simply not having done many miles lately. They hurt all the way home. It was clear, though, that I can't continue to use these shoes for longer races, so I stopped by the Bermans' tent and picked up a pair that are a half-size bigger.
I did decide that a tiny bit more exercise wouldn't do me any harm, so I walked (very slowly) back up the hill to the car instead of taking the shuttle.
