pedaling (bicycle rollers) 30:37 [2]

Propped the front of the rollers up on a couple of boards, which made things easier on my hands. Unlike on a treadmill, this does not simulate going uphill. Got back into the reflexes for this, to the extent that I was able to look forward rather than concentrating my gaze on the front wheel and roller contact patch. Started to drift pretty close to the edge a few times, but successfully recovered without having to grab the wall. I started in a low gear, thinking that might make the control easier, but ended up shifting higher, which seemed to help smooth things out a bit.

Note

Wasn't sure I'd feel well enough to go to work, and thought I'd maybe have to cut the day short if I did, but I ended up going in early and staying late.

Note
(sick)

Originally planned on going for a modest run, but the weathher was pretty cold, and I was feeling under it. So I decided to ride the bike rollers, but kept putting it off and essentially spent the entire day in bed. This illness is behaving like a cold on an accelerated schedule, and I'm optimistic that I'll get through it in a single day and be okay tomorrow. It's not that horrible, but I've been a little sneezy and have had a pretty bad headache that has persisted all day despite my taking my usual analgesics twice and slathering an unprecedented amount of tiger balm onto my face.

running (trails) 1:00:58 [2] 7.5 km (8:08 / km) +127m 7:29 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Pearl Hill loop variation. This is such a nice area, and with the leaves down, I was able to see more cool stuff that I had not noticed before. I'm definitely gong to encourage NEOC to move this to the top of the mapping priority list. A couple of inches of snow, mostly with a single set of tracks, that were variously snowmobile, ATV, skis, or snowshoes. Dressed a little lighter than I did last night, since the temperature was about 20 degrees warmer. Spikes were definitely the right choice for footwear.

running 34:25 [2] 5.38 km (6:24 / km) +45m 6:08 / km
shoes: GoLite Blaze Lite

Highland loop with an extra spur. I originally planned on just going around the block, but after I got all bundled up (it wasn't that cold, not - quite - down to single digits), I got to Holman Street and decided to go straight and make it a little more worthwhile. The clothing was well-chosen, nothing felt cold, just cool in a few spots. The extra spur was to the post office, to drop off a letter that should be a portent of days with more pleasant weather.

pedaling (bicycle mag trainer) 51:02 intensity: (7:01 @3) + (44:01 @4)

Got myself going again. I can't do this at a pace that doesn't hurt. I specifically dialed it back for the last stretch, but was still pushing harder than I meant to. It's probably not that hard in terms of actual power, but it's a lot in terms of how I feel. Had to go stand in the unheated garage for a while after I stopped.

Watched the first two episodes of Brass Eye ("Animals" and "Drugs") on YouTube. The sound wasn't quite loud enough, so I missed some parts, but there were some pretty good bits in there. I think there's also some stuff that's a bit lost on me since I'm not familiar with some of these noted British people from 15 years ago who appear on the show.

Note

Snow dealings, round 5: scraping a couple of inches off of my driveway, and helping Stephen shovel quite a bit more than that at Nancy's.
3 PM

running 52:19 [3] 8.16 km (6:25 / km) +74m 6:08 / km
shoes: GoLite Blaze Lite

Back to the heavier clothing, back to the heavier shoes, back to the (slightly) slushy streets, back to the slower time. I also felt kind of crappy the whole time, and wasn't pushing hard, but at least I got it done.

running 47:55 [3] 8.18 km (5:52 / km) +86m 5:34 / km
shoes: Saucony Grid Adapt

After a substantial hiatus (yesterday I just couldn't get motivated to go out in the wet), I at least did a run. Quite a bit faster than when I did this last week, parobably due in part to less clothing and lighter shoes.

pedaling (bicycle mag trainer) 28:00 intensity: (8:00 @3) + (20:00 @4)

Already down to single digits by the time I got home, so I spent most of the evening shivering while the boiler struggled to get the house up to temperature, and finally got some exercise, to warm up as much as anything. Found the mag trainer out in the garage and nearly got frostbite on my hand carrying it in. Figured I'd do about a half-hour, scaled my ambitions back to 25 minutes, but then stuck it out for another three. Whenever I'm on this bike (Incubus), I have trouble not pushing hard. On the rollers, there's no load to speak of, but on the mag trainer, it can be hard work.

Note

Got home late, and my stomach wasn't feeling that great, so I skipped it.

Sunday Jan 5, 2014 #

3 PM

running (pavement) 52:30 [3] 8.18 km (6:25 / km) +74m 6:08 / km
shoes: GoLite Blaze Lite

A little bit longer run, about evenly split between wet pavement and snowy/slushy pavement that was kind of slippery. Might have been better off with spikes, but this was okay. Warm weather (above freezing).

I've got a long way to go...

shoveling (snow) 30:00 [2]

Snow dealings, round 4: clearing Mom's driveway and mine. Hers get plowed, so I just needed to shovel where she turns her car around, and did a path out to the woodpile so I could fill her woodbox and move some to the shed. Then at my place I got the driveway clear enough that I'm hoping that the warm raiin coming Monday will chew up the ice, and halfheartedly shoveled the walk to my front door. Time is a guess.

shoveling (snow) 10:00 [3]

Snow dealings, round 3: shoveled just the tire tracks to get the car out onto the road, because my pllans of working from home were dashed when something went wrong and I had to go in to address it. I'd say at least half the department was out.

pedaling (bicycle rollers) 24:10 [2]

When I got home, it was already down to 0F, so I didn't even shovel more of the driveway. Sat around the house doing passive stuff and eventually decided I needed to do something to get warm. Going outdoors in the dark at these temperatures seemed dumb, so I went for a ride instead. Didn't set up any entertaiment, and just rode until I lost enough concentration to fall off the side, and decided that was enough rather than get back on and fall off again. No load on these rollers, but this does work up a sweat (I did it in the heated part of the house rather than in the mud room, to avoid freezing my fingers off).

Note

How long did it take for a training fail? January 2. Sigh. After getting home frmo work and dealing with some stuff associated with picking up after my travels, I simply fell asleep.

There will be snow dealings. Just before Xmas, my snowblower died, and I haven't yet had a chance to get pickup truck assistance to fetch the one that isn't being used from Mom's house. Fortunately, this snow is going to be light and fluffy, so I'll just shovel it. When I got back from Florida, my driveway had no snow on it, but was a solid sheet of ice, so that's the surface I'll be shoveling down to. Based on what I was seeing from the plane, I think there was probably a window of opportunity for outdoor ice skating, and I missed it.

Note

Well, I'm pretty sure that's the first (and hopefully only) time I've ever been a the sort of New Years party where one of the guests decides to celebrate by pulling out a .38 automatic and firing the entire clip out into the darkness.

running (pavement) 20:19 [3] 3.52 km (5:46 / km)
shoes: GoLite Blaze Lite

Maybe the slick move would have been to put on shorts and a T-shirt and go for a run first thing in the morning, but I needed to pack and take the written test for my AT rating and pay my tab and say goodbyes and make it to the airport in time, so I didn't. On the way home I stopped at Mom's and filled up her firewood bin, then in order to maintain my exercise resolution, I bundled up and put on the headlamp and went out for a little run. Temperature was in the mid teens, and I was pretty cold until I got to the cemetery, and after that I was just sorta cold. Not much of a run, but it's a travel day, and this is what I kind of have pegged as the minimum to do every day. The next couple of days might be tough, and I may opt to do some indoor bicycling.

Note

One more Florida AOWN photo: these two sandhill cranes reportedly hang around the flight park all the time, but they're still skittish enough that I wasn't able to get very close.
