Note

A day of lethargy to end the year. (Not entirely inactive, but I was doing unloggable stuff around the house.) Surprised to find that my training was up this year from recent years, with 172 hours, 1100 km, and 597 controls. Orienteering was down, but overall training was up. I'm surprised because it feels like I didn't have time for anything once I started working at Autoliv, but there's still a decent amount logged, and I did rack up a bit early on working on the Lunenburg Project. That did get stalled, with almost no additions after July (the last one was August 5). I've finished 41% of the streets, and about 51% of the distance, although those numbers are a bit deceptively low, since I don't count a street until I've completed it, and there are some that have substantial sections done. Still, with all that, I'm about at my heaviest ever, feeling kind of fat and out of shape. My goal of having something to log every day held together until May 21. In the end, there were 92 days without exercise -- it really fell apart in late September. I did put up a note every day, for what that's worth. I went hang gliding in more months than I went orienteering (10 vs. 9), but in terms of courses vs flights (32 to 16), time (32 hours to 17.5 hours) and point-to-point distance (166 km to 42 km), orienteerimg still wins out.

Note

Snow dealings, round 3a: about 6" here, fairly dry stuff. The snowblower worked like a champ and took care of everything. The only annoying part was when the wind would blow the powder snow back in my face. Sounds like Stephen has things under control at Nancy's place.

hiking (snowshoes) 1:02:25 [3] 6.1 km (10:14 / km) +70m 9:41 / km
shoes: GoLite SunDragon

Abbreviated Mystery Blazes (turned right at the power line trail and went directly to the esker). I wore the medium snowshoes, which was the right choice for this amount of snow. Mostly breaking trail, so not much running. Snowmobile tracks on the main trail and the power line trail, bootprints from between the storms in a few places, ski tracks on the esker, and snowshoe tracks from the esker to the bridge. Very slow crossing Mulpus Brook on a snow-covered log, managed to not fall in. I originally intended to do just the Mulpus loop, but it was nice out, so I crossed and kept going.

exercises 1:49 [5]

25 pushups, 50 situps, 25 squats, 9 pullups. Didn't have the 10th pullup in me.

bowling (candlepins) 3:00 [0]

Three games at Harvard Lanes with Nancy and the kids, 84/84/87. Pretty pathetic scores, but those were the three best games of the night. Partway through the first game, it switched to "cosmic bowling", which is not especially to my liking. I had to basically unfocus my eyes and just heave the ball generally in the right direction. The last game was done in "hasty style", although we were still taking turns, so I was only hurrying up for brief stretches. Stephen won a bazillion tickets playing skee-ball and related games.

shoveling (snow) 14:00 [3]

Snow dealings, round 2c: cleared the area around Mom's car.

Note

Snow dealings, round 2a. We got about 7" after it settled, started as snow but I suppose the last bit was probably rain, so it was pretty wet and dense. The antique snowblower started without any fuss and cleared the driveway okay, but when I tried to do the mailbox, it couldn't really handle the glop and kept getting clogged. Then it acted like it was low on gas, so I added some more, and after a while of running for a few seconds then almost stalling, over and over again, it got into a mode where it I could start it, it would run for a few seconds, then quit. So I pushed it back to the garage and finished the mailbox with a shovel.

shoveling (snow) 1:09:00 [3]

Snow dealings, round 2b. I let Nancy's driveway sit while it rained during the day, so by the time I got there it had consolidated down to something like an inch of very dense slop, which I was able to plow into berms and toss to the side.

Note

Travel day, driving back from Vermont, and a little firewood schlepping at Mom's, making sure she's well provisioned in advance of the snow.

Yuletide lethargy.

alpine skiing 3:17:40 [1]

Bolton Valley, with Alan, Geneva, Celia, and Jim. Seven runs, of which five were with various subsets of the family and two were black diamond runs on my own. Special early-season deal, only $25 for a full-day lift ticket. We stayed as long as it was interesting, then headed home to prepare for the big meal tonight. I was using a pair of 178 cm modern-ish skis that used to belong to "Uncle Lucky" (a relative of Alan's friend Bob). Major issues with my glasses fogging, I should have put something on them.

exercises 10 [5]

Pullups on my brother's pullup handles.

Saturday Dec 22, 2012 #

Note

What? Exercise? Wasn't the world supposed to be ended by now?

Friday Dec 21, 2012 #

exercises 5 [5]

5 pullups, testing out the installation of the rings in the garage.

running (pavement) 47:42 [3] 7.64 km (6:15 / km) +90m 5:54 / km
shoes: Saucony Grid Adapt

Having finished up everything at work yesterday, I was able to take today off, and spent the gloomy, rainy day indoors. But in the late afternoon the sun came out, and when I went out to get the mail, I was pleased at how warm it was, and decided to go for a little jaunt. The gate at the cul-de-sac at the bottom of The Woodlands has been removed, and replaced with one out at Gilchrest St.

shoveling (ice) 50:00 [2]

Snow dealings, round 1: I didn't bother to do anything about my own driveway, and I'm just hoping it will melt off, but Nancy's is a different story. At least this was largely pushing downhill, but the endgame unvolved tossing pretty heavy shovelfuls to the side. Also includes a little sand/salt action.

Sunday Dec 16, 2012 #

Note

Exercise ambitions came to naught. Lousy weather, and I never got around to any indoor activity. But I got a bunch of other stuff done.

Saturday Dec 15, 2012 #

Note

I did not exercise today, but I did acquire an item that will facilitate future exercise:

And out in my yard, I had an AOWN moment:

My favorite new line: "These are Rhosgobel rabbits; I'd like like to see them try!". If it's of any interest to you, you'll figure out the significance of that on your own. If not, don't worry about it.

Monday Dec 10, 2012 #

Note

A bit of DOMS, which I suspect is a result of the yoga rather than anything else.

exercises (yoga) 10:39 [2]

Rhonda's warmup session. Some of the moves make my lower back a little uncomfortable. It's tricky to be doing this stuff while also trying to keep an eye on Rhonda so I can see what it is that I'm supposed to be doing.

exercises (cross-fit) 13:51 [4] 1.5 km (9:14 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Adapt

3x (Hospital loop, 5 burpees, 10 mountain climbers, 10 squats). The mountain climbers and squats are easy, the burpees require a bit more effort, and the running got slower and slower.

orienteering (night) 47:52 [3] *** 3.2 km (14:57 / km) +130m 12:26 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

RHIN-O #5. Warmish and foggy. One screw-up on the way to #4 when I started by needlessly going through the woods, and then blew past a turn, and it was a stupid route choice to begin with, and it's hard to believe I lost as little time as SA says I did. Then pretty sloppy on #6 and #7, and apparently a bad route choice to #12. The hatlamp seemed to be getting a little grumpy about operating in the damp conditions. There were a few times when I took it off and held it at thigh level, which was a big improvement in the fog.

Friday Dec 7, 2012 #

Note

zilch, but I was already well beyond the number of hours at work for which I have to get approval, and knew I was going to have to work on Saturday as well, and although my job supposedly involves sitting at a desk and writing software, in practice it involves a lot of walking around the facility (sometimes carrying stuff), so it's not an entirely sedentary experience.

orienteering race 1:27:44 [3] *** 6.64 km (13:13 / km)
spiked:11/16c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Beaver Brook, Red. Foggy, drizzly, and about 34 F, despite the forecast of temps in the 50s, but not as unpleasant as that would make it sound. The course went CCW this time, which was a pleasant change. No really big goofs, just a few that I must have pretty much walked right past but missed them due to the low visibility (at one point I took my glasses off for a couple of legs because they weren't doing me any good). Finished well behind Alar, and quite a way behind Jim Arsenault.

hiking 28:21 [2] 0.67 mi (42:19 / mi)
shoes: Nike Initiator

Another glider hike at Wellfleet due to landing out, although this one was trickier because I was going downwind, so I needed to walk backwards to keep the nose pointing into the wind, and the velocity was lower, so it wasn't so easy to keep the glider supporting its own weight. Not included in this is climbing the bluff with my glider (with a couple of friends helping), and a second trip helping Jon get his glider up to the parking lot.
