Note

And two zeroes in a row.

Thursday Aug 30, 2012 #

Note

Nothing. Worked a kind of long day, in part to make up for skipping out a little early yesterday.

orienteering race (corn maze) 25:39 [2] **** 2.17 km (11:50 / km)
spiked:14/17c shoes: Nike Initiator

WCMRE Day 1. Made a serious effort to keep the speed down and the map contact up. Got myself pretty bewildered on #2 (I was in the right place but couldn't get myself to go the right way) and lost two minutes, but the rest was not so bad.

orienteering (corn maze) 10:56 [2] **** 1.08 km (10:08 / km)
spiked:5/7c shoes: Nike Initiator

WCMRE Day 2. Same plan, pretty successful. Lost time on #2 when I was on the edge of the circle but couldn't figure out from the map how to get into the dead-end passage, and on #3 when I lost contact just as I got to the final turn, second-guessed myself, and retraced my steps a little before deciding that I had been in the right place to begin with.

Tapering.

running (woods) 42:30 [3] 6.5 km (6:32 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Shorter Mystery Blazes, In The Dim. A fair bit slower than the last time I did this, back in April, assuming it was actually the same loop. I did start out pretty casually tonight, though I was pushing a little harder by the end. But it was dark under the evergreens, and it was maybe 15-20 degrees warmer than in April. With some vegetation and deadfall to deal with.

Sunday Aug 26, 2012 #

Note

Walking around museums and going on boat rides isn't exercise, but it's good to be outdoors.

Saturday Aug 25, 2012 #

hiking 1:00:00 [1] 2.93 km (20:30 / km)

In Boothbay Harbor with Nancy -- the first half of this was what I think the AR crowd calls "coasteering", scrambling on rocks below the high-tide line. Fairly low intensity, with a lot of stops to look at lighthouses and other oceany things, and to take pictures, but I figure anything where I can roll my ankle at least marginally qualifies as exercise.

Friday Aug 24, 2012 #

Note

Zeeeeero. Too much going on.

Thursday Aug 23, 2012 #

orienteering race (corn maze) 19:33 [4] **** 1.95 km (10:03 / km)
spiked:5/12c shoes: Nike Initiator

Classic. Moving too fast for my ability to navigate, went some pretty weird places.

orienteering race (corn maze) 8:34 [4] **** 0.49 km (17:27 / km)
spiked:2/6c shoes: Nike Initiator

Sprint. Moving waaaay too fast for my ability to navigate, did some serious thrashing around in very dumb places.

orienteering race (corn maze) 10:04 [4] **** 1.06 km (9:29 / km)
spiked:4/8c shoes: Nike Initiator

Relay, with Geoff Pingree. He tagged off to me in an excellent position (2nd?), and I proceeded to let most of the field get past me. A slightly better job of maintaining contact, but still not nearly good enough. I really need to spend more time figuring out my route before I head off toward a dead end, and I should probably be walking, not running. But loads of fun in any case.

Wednesday Aug 22, 2012 #

exercises 1:15 [4]

50 situps, 25 squats. At a more leisurely than usual pace.

Feeling disrespected, disillusioned, and experiencing some odd forms of physical discomfort (hand and shoulder aches). Somewhat mistreated, scapegoated and misutilized. Unsure if I want to continue with the current employment track, while wondering if I'm a wimp if I don't. Feeling sorry for myself, and feeling like a whiner. And fat. Presumably feeling better than Kissy.

running (woods) 30:37 [2] 5.43 km (5:38 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Partial Mystery Blazes, as far as where it crosses the power line trail, then back to the esker and home. I thought I had done this another time recently, but I took a quick look and didn't find it.

Monday Aug 20, 2012 #

running (trails) 33:24 [3] 3.29 mi (10:09 / mi) +256m 8:11 / mi
shoes: Nike Initiator

Townsend State Forest West. Parallel to the rail line, then the shortcut up to the big crucifix (I was wrong!), out to the trail going up, left at the NHArrow rock, and continued up until the next junction. Then back down the other way (left at the NHArrow rock), which is a more gradual slope and probably more pleasant for going up. Nearly twice as fast on the descent. There was a woman and her dog up at the crucifix -- unusual for me to encounter people in the woods, and I was somewhat impressed by her because it's a pretty good climb to get up there, and she was smoking a cigarette.

GPS track was again not very good. When I pulled it put of my pocket to turn it off, it looked like the LED was already off, but the time agrees with my watch, so maybe I bumped the button while pulling it out, or maybe it was on and I just couldn't see it. In any case, I should try something like putting it on a hat to see if it works better, or maybe replace it.

Sunday Aug 19, 2012 #

running 1:02:18 [3] 5.52 mi (11:17 / mi)
shoes: Nike Initiator

Townsend State Forest West. Parked on Dudley Rd. and headed south on the old rail line to check out the spot where the old trestle used to be. To my great surprise, the trestle was still standing, though I could have sworn I had been told long ago that it was gone. Upon further thought, I think I had been told that it had burned down, and when I walked across, I could see a few spots that I would describe as "scorched", but not seriously burnt. There are a few ties missing, but the main structure appears to be intact. I'm not sure that it would be safe for locomotives (no danger of that happening), but it looks fine for light traffic.

From there I headed north, looking for a good spot to leave the railroad bed, hoping to run trails. I wanted old established trails, not recent skidder tracks covered with slash, and eventually I just headed up through the woods, and found an absolutely lovely trail up on top. I ran that for a way, tehn turned around and followed trails back, so now I know a place to get on the nice trails from the bottom. Note to self: the path to the big crucifix is a dead end (that's not intended to be a metaphor, but...).

GPS track is... not particularly accurate. At all. For example, I followed the railroad bed on the way up. I might need to think about getting something newer. Looks like I still have some climbing to do to get to the top of Barker Hill.

orienteering 1:46:03 [2] *** 5.61 km (18:53 / km)
spiked:9/17c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Bye Bye Peekskill training at Bushy Ridge. Kind of warm, taking it easy, and pretty sloppy on the navigation. There are a couple where I might not have actually been in the right place. Unpleasantly thick for the first part, gloriously open for the middle, and fine (largely on trails) at the end. Did the last part jogging along and chatting with Eddie. Took a fall about halfway between 10 and 11, and did something funny to my chest -- I didn't hit anything, but it feels like a cracked rib (in terms of quality, but not in intensity, I can barely feel it most of the time).

orienteering 1:14:40 [2] *** 4.65 km (16:04 / km)
spiked:12/15c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Bye Bye Peekskill training at Blue Mountain. Nice open woods, map with no trails or stone walls. Not pushing things (due to the chest discomfort). Pretty entertaining to run past a kickball game with live commentary on the PA system.

Thanks, Neil!

Note

The consensus from those gathered was that I am indeed looking fat, and appear to be about 10 pounds overweight. Nothing to do but go on a diet, I guess.

Note

Zero for today (I could do some exercises before going to sleep but I don't feel like it), but I may have burned off some calories via stress during my drive to Ratlum Mountan through hellacious thunderstorms.

I did arrive in time to have some of Rhonda's excellent birthday cake!

exercises 1:15 [5]

50 situps, 25 squats. Although it didn't hurt immediately after the unicycle fall, my right wrist started to hurt a little several hours later. No pain most of the time, just when I move it certain ways. So I decided to exercise a little caution and lay off the exercises that would put weight on it for a little while, to avoid irritating it further until it seems to be recovered.

pedaling (unicycle) 29:21 [1] 4.38 km (6:42 / km)

The "outer loop" (Northfield-Oak-Highland-Northfield). I was probably a bit tired, and I got a little too casual on the downhill right near the fancy stone wall, and I let the wheel get ahead of me. Too much speed, and I had an out-and-out fall. Went off the back and landed on my butt while the unicycle scooted out forward. Kind of a non-event, no harm done, though my hands are a a tiny bit sore (I reflexively put them down behind me). It did kill my enthusiasm, though, and since the way home was the the rest of the descent to the culvert followed by the steep climb, I just walked it.

hiking 1:00:00 [1] 1.95 km (30:46 / km) +50m 27:16 / km

Hiking the North trail and the Cobblestone Beach trail with Nancy, before catching the boat back to the mainland.

hiking 50:00 [1] 1.8 km (27:47 / km) +150m 19:36 / km
shoes: Nike Initiator

Trip to Seguin Island, ME, with Nancy. Best lighthouse trip ever. After a harrowing boat ride through dense fog, we hiked up to the lighthouse and settled into our accommodations (in the keeper's house). When the weather cleared, we hiked the South trail, then came back and hiked the Cove trail. Time is a guess.

running (trails) 41:27 [3] 4.12 km (10:03 / km) +200m 8:05 / km
shoes: Nike Initiator

Everywhere you'd really want to go (and a few spots where you wouldn't) on Seguin Island. The trail map showed the North trail as being a loop, but you'd never know that on the ground. I got to the north end of the island, and the trail got progressively worse, until I was eventually in head-high fight. I can see on the aerial photo where the trail presumaby goes, but it was grown in and unrecognizable. Still, I'd give another try at it if armed with a printout of the photo. After I thrashed my way back to the trail, I ran all the other trails in a sequence that maximized the climb. Got some gulls pretty agitated in the process.

exercises 1:55 [5]

25 squats, 15 tableups, 25 pushups, 50 situps. A different order for a change of pace. And I took a CPR course.

Friday Aug 10, 2012 #

Note

A zero, but I did notice something curious. I stepped on the scale at Nancy's house, and it appears that I'm heavier now than I have ever been in the past. Strange. I don't particularly feel like I've been eating more than usual, or being a slug, and I don't feel any different or think I look any different. And I'm not particularly concerned, at least not so far.

pedaling (unicycle) 45:45 [1] 6.29 km (7:16 / km)

Highland St. figure 8, but in the opposite direction from what I've done in the past, starting out by going down the steep bit to the brook instead of coming up it at the end. Four dismounts: two when I was fiddling with things, one when I came to a turn without being alert enough, and one at a stop sign when I didn't feel like balancing to wait for the cross traffic. Not very vigorous exercise, but a fine choice for a nice evening.

running (woods) 46:25 [2] 7.0 km (6:38 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Mystery Blazes LSwamp. Making a concerted mental effort to not make much of a physical effort, just trying to take it easy. Kind of hoped to be around 50 minutes, but I was a fair bit faster. A few FDFs around, getting stuck in my hair but not biting.

Monday Aug 6, 2012 #

Zero. Sigh.

After the storms went through, I figured the woods would be all wet, so I went for a road run. Up to the car dealership to make sure that the car they had out front wouldn't have been a better choice than the one I actually bought (it wouldn't have), then around a loop that included going through North Cemetery and getting all the little roads in there. I wasn't sure if I wanted to count them or not, but they all have street signs, including one sign that's clearly wrong (it looks like there are two Middle Avenues, but one is labeled Beech on the other end). I have the names right, but maybe not the "types" (i.e. some of them might not be "Ave."). The ones with the equal signs are the cemetery streets. Very humid out, and I felt very lethargic. This was about the only thing I did all day (other than a little halfhearted tidying up at home), and I was feeling pretty much like a big general failure.

I included a gmap-pedometer version of this because the GPS went wonky. The LED was blinking red when I got home, an indication that it has lost satellite contact, I think.

A zero for exercise. But the first real performance by The Holman Hack Band in over 27 years. Eight pieces (plus numerous other numbers by other people at the party, two of which included me).

running race (carpet) 42 [5] 0.15 km (4:36 / km)
shoes: Nike Initiator

The Narrow Band Track Meet. This was pretty marginal as far as races go, and it was a disappointment relative to our expectations, but it did happen. At work we have a "test track" consisting of an instrumented mounting station for our radar sensors, and a motorized track that has a radar reflector mounted on it. You can program the track to move the reflector to simulate a moving car, at speeds up to 6 m/s. It accelerates pretty fast (we had it set to 5 m/s2), so in a race it can get the jump on a human, although 6 m/s is not that formidable a top speed. The track is 47 meters long, and we ran the reflector carriage from the 2 m mark to the 40 m mark, in order for the humans to have enough room to slow down before running into the far wall. So it was the 38 meter dash. I was the first one to try, doing four runs, with the carriage going at 2, 4, 5, and 6 m/s. The objective was to reach the 40 m mark before the carriage did. I succeeded at all speeds, as did Mat and Carl. This was all in honor of Scott's last day at work, but he was a no-show; we didn't realize until we were done that he had already turned in his badge and couldn't get in to the track area. Jorge didn't show up, either, nor did any of the spectators or judges. (Carl may have gone back with Scott afterwards -- I had to leave, so I'm not sure.)

25 pushups, 50 situps, 15 tableups, 25 squats.

Note

Zero. Was planning on at least walking from home to the Ritter Building to get my car after a shuttle to get the old car back fro Ernie's, But Rob insisted on follwing me all the way home and giving me a ride to save me the trouble. Legs sore from yesterday anyway.
